HP CM seeks permanent member from state in BBMB
Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu called on Union minister for power Manohar Lal Khattar in New Delhi and advocated for the release of arrears due from Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) besides calling for appointing a permanent member from Himachal Pradesh to the BBMB.
Sukhu urged for an increase in the state's free power share in hydropower projects operated by public sector undertakings (PSUs) and central public sector undertakings (CPSUs), particularly those where the cost has already been recovered. He said that while the state was significantly contributing to the development of the nation, therefore its rightful dues must also be safeguarded.
During the meeting, Sukhu also discussed the long-pending demand of handing over the Baira Siul project to the state, which was constructed in 1980-81. He thanked the Union minister for giving in-principle approval to the handover of Luhri, Sunni and Dhaula Sidh projects of the SJVNL, as well as the Duggar project of NHPC to the State. He said that cost assessment of these projects was currently underway.
He also demanded the release of central funds for the development of the Jathia Devi Township and held discussions on various ongoing projects under the urban development department.
Sukhu also called on Union jal shakti minister CR Patil and advocated for the protection of rights of the state in the Kishau hydro-electric project. He emphasised the need for a favourable funding pattern. He said the financial burden of the Kishau project should be borne entirely either by the central government or by the major beneficiary states, such as Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
During the meeting, the CM also raised critical issues concerning the Renuka Dam project. He called for due consideration of the Local Area Development Fund and the free power component. During a meeting with Union minister for health and family welfare JP Nadda, he sought central support for strengthening health infrastructure in HP. He specifically requested the establishment of a dedicated cancer care centre in the state and introduction of advanced medical technologies and modern equipment in government hospitals.
While meeting Union minister for culture and tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, he requested for speedy approval for Auhar project and added that state government envisages to develop it as major water sports destination. He added that projects for Dehra and Pong dam were also awaiting approval.

On this World Food Safety Day, every Indian must make a vow to reduce salt intake, processed food as well as 10 per cent of oil consumption, said Jagat Prakash Nadda, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare on Saturday. According to him, it is our collective responsibility to spread awareness about eating the right food. Nadda was addressing an event organised to celebrate World Food Safety Day by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru. World Food Safety Day is celebrated on June 7 of every year. "We should take the clarion call given by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi and see to it that at least in our own homes, we are able to reduce 10 per cent of oil consumption and salt consumption. This is the most necessary part. We also have to see to it that processed foods are reduced to the maximum," said Nadda. He also said to remain healthy and to eat right, India must revisit its traditional food practices. "Our traditional food includes many types of preparations with millets. We have to revive this tradition," he added. Nadda also said health consciousness and the Eat Right Movement are imperative as obesity is spreading fast in India. "India's diabetes study by ICMR says that from 2008 to 2020, the obesity in urban India has increased by 39.6 per cent and in rural areas, it has increased by 23.1% per cent. It is also projected that by 2050, 1/3 of the population will be obese," said Nadda, adding that time to act is now. During the event, Nadda also released a booklet called 'Eat Right India'. Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of Department of School Education and Literacy, who addressed the gathering via video conferencing, explained how the science of eating right has become a part of National Council for Education, Research and Training's curriculum.

BJP names Kanad Purkayastha as candidate for Assam Rajya Sabha polls
Guwahati: The BJP on Saturday announced that the party's Assam state secretary Kanad Purkayastha would be its candidate for the June 19 Rajya Sabha election from the state. BJP's National General Secretary Arun Singh, in a statement, said the party's central election committee has approved the candidature of Purkayastha, who is currently the party's Assam state secretary. A party leader from southern Assam's Barak valley said that Purkayastha is the only son of veteran BJP leader and former Union minister Kabindra Purkayastha. Elections for two Rajya Sabha seats in Assam are scheduled on June 19, with counting of votes set to take place the same day. The last date for filling of nominations is June 9, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is June 12. The ruling BJP had earlier announced that it would field a candidate for one of the seats, leaving the other seat to its ally, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). The two Rajya Sabha seats from Assam would be vacated after the retirement of Mission Ranjan Das (BJP) and Birendra Prasad Baishya (AGP) on June 14. Assam has seven Rajya Sabha seats. After Trinamool Congress' Sushmita Dev, who was elected to the Upper House of Parliament from West Bengal, Purkayastha would be the second Rajya Sabha member from the Barak Valley. Hailing from Silchar, Dev, daughter of former Union Minister and late Congress leader Santosh Mohan Dev, was earlier elected to the Lok Sabha from Silchar parliamentary constituency. Over four million people, mostly Bengali speaking, reside in the three districts of the Barak Valley region in Southern Assam -- Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi. Political observers said that despite the Barak Valley's substantial population and political significance, no leader from this region, adjoining Tripura, has previously been elected to the Rajya Sabha on a BJP ticket. Purkayastha's nomination is an attempt to deal with this gap and aims to strengthen the BJP's base among Bengali Hindus in Barak Valley. The Purkayastha family has been influential in Assam's political circle as veteran leader Kabindra Purkayastha's legacy and Kanad's active participation in the BJP's political activities contribute to the family's persistent prominence in Assam politics.
