Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has conveyed his condolences following the passing of former President of Vietnam Tran Duc Luong. Anwar said the late Tran Duc Luong served during a defining period in Vietnam's history, helping to uphold the spirit of the Doi Moi (economic) reforms with quiet resolve. 'As Deputy Prime Minister and later as President, he played a steady role in guiding the nation through change, ensuring that progress was matched by stability and a clear sense of direction. 'On behalf of the Government and people of Malaysia, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Vietnam,' Anwar posted on Facebook. Malaysian property tycoon pleads guilty in case linked to Singapore ex-minister

(EPA Images pic) SINGAPORE: Property tycoon Ong Beng Seng pleaded guilty to abetting the obstruction of justice at the state court today, in a case linked to former Singapore transport minister S Iswaran, according to local media reports. The Malaysian businessman, who played a key role in bringing the F1 race to Singapore, admitted to the charge related to a December 2022 trip to Qatar, for which Iswaran had accepted Ong's invitation, The Straits Times (ST) reported. A second charge of abetting a public servant in obtaining gifts will be taken into consideration for sentencing. Ong was first charged on Oct 4, 2024. His guilty plea followed multiple pre-trial conferences and court adjournments. The prosecution said Iswaran did not pay for his flight to Doha or his return flight to Singapore, nor did he pay for his hotel accommodation. Iswaran had travelled to Doha on Ong's private jet, while his hotel stay and return business-class flight were paid for by Singapore GP Pte Ltd (SGP) on Ong's instructions. In October 2024, Iswaran was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment by the High Court after pleading guilty to four charges of obtaining valuable items as a public servant and one count of obstruction of justice. The obstruction of justice charge was linked to the S$5,700 Iswaran repaid to SGP for the cost of his business-class flight from Doha to Singapore in 2022. The prosecution said Ong also knew that Iswaran's act of making the repayment was likely to obstruct the course of justice, ST reported. Principal district judge Lee Lit Cheng set sentencing for Aug 15. Ong's bail of S$800,000 meanwhile was extended. In mitigation, Ong's defence team said that he suffered from multiple myeloma, a type of cancer, which rendered him immunocompromised and would endanger his life if he were to contract an infection in prison. Reward whistleblowers in civil service, says deputy speaker

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Ramli Nor has proposed that the government reward civil servants who expose corruption within their ranks. He suggested in Parliament today that incentives be provided to encourage whistleblowing within the public sector, arguing that it would be difficult otherwise for the government to be informed of corruption. 'Maybe through the government's administrative regulations or laws, we can reward civil servants who whistleblow on internal affairs,' he said. 'Reward them RM1,000 or RM2,000 – something, but covertly,' he said. Earlier, home minister Saifuddin Nasution said his ministry was taking steps to address misconduct at the country's main points of entry, including KLIA. KLIA has recently been plagued by allegations of syndicates colluding with enforcement officers to facilitate the illegal entry of travellers. Saifuddin said his ministry's steps included the implementation of an advance passenger screening system by the end of the year. Perikatan hails Anwar's role in Thailand-Cambodia ceasefire
KUALA LUMPUR: Perikatan Nasional on Monday (Aug 4) congratulated and commended Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his key role in arranging a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. Perikatan deputy chairman and Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said the coalition welcomed any Malaysian involvement in efforts to strengthen regional stability. "Whatever role played by the Honourable Tambun member (Anwar), even if described by some as simply that of a host, it remains a contribution that will be recorded in history. I offer my congratulations and appreciation. "What's important is that Malaysia continues to be respected as a sovereign nation and is regarded as a credible balancing power in the Southeast Asian region,' he said when debating the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday. On July 28, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an unconditional and immediate ceasefire following a special meeting in Putrajaya chaired by Anwar. At the meeting, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai also agreed to convene a General Border Committee Meeting as part of the ceasefire agreement. In line with this, Hamzah called for Malaysia to remain consistent in championing global peace and to boldly express firm stances against all forms of cruelty and oppression, especially in light of Monday's fragile geopolitical environment. "The ongoing humanitarian crisis and genocide in Gaza, the war in Eastern Europe, prolonged conflicts in the Middle East, and the tensions between Thailand and Cambodia all have direct or indirect impacts on Malaysia. "To safeguard the country's diplomatic and strategic interests from all angles, the Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and the entire Cabinet bear a great responsibility to ensure their statements and actions remain composed and measured," he said. On the 19% tariff imposed by the United States on Malaysia, Hamzah said Perikatan holds a firm view that the country must trade with dignity, especially in defending its sovereignty and national interests. The US has imposed a 19% tariff on Malaysian goods effective Aug 1, a drop from the 25% it proposed earlier. - Bernama
