Ex-cop, two officers charged for RM20k bribe in drug case
IPOH: A former police corporal and two police personnel holding the rank of lance corporal were charged at the Sessions Court here today with two counts of accepting a RM20,000 bribe in exchange for not taking action against an individual found in possession of drugs in July 2023.
Wan Mohd Nor Imran Wan Seman, 35, who now works as a lorry driver, along with police personnel Ahmad Rabani Rusnizal, 29, and Mohamad Shukre Mohamed Rowi, 37, pleaded not guilty to both charges read before Judge Meor Sulaiman Ahmad Tarmizi.
According to the first charge, all three, as police officers attached to the Crime Prevention Unit of the Merbok Police Station in Kedah, allegedly conspired to receive a bribe of RM10,000. The money was transferred from an AmBank Islamic account belonging to Azizi Norhafizi Abu Bakar, 37, into a Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) account under Ahmad Rabani's name.
The bribe was allegedly given as an inducement not to take action against the individual for possessing syabu (methamphetamine), an offence under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
The alleged offence took place at BSN-CPI Kamunting, Perak, at about 3 am on July 24, 2023.
For the second charge, they are accused of committing the same offence involving the same individual, amount and location on July 25, 2023.
The charges were brought under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.
The court allowed bail at RM5,000 with one surety for each accused, along with the additional conditions that they surrender their passports and report to the nearest MACC office.
The case is set for mention on June 26.

Sukuk misuse case: Tan Sri to be quizzed soon following hospital discharge, says Azam
KUALA LUMPUR: A Tan Sri who is under investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over the alleged misappropriation of sukuk funds linked to a Klang Valley highway project is expected to be called in for questioning soon. The individual, who was recently discharged from hospital, is also being investigated for overseas asset ownership and high-stakes gambling activities involving millions of ringgit. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that the Tan Sri, who is believed to be a highway concession holder, had yet to give his statement due to recent medical treatment at a private hospital, reported Astro Awani. 'A statement has not yet been recorded from the Tan Sri, but I have been informed that doctors have recently allowed him to be discharged. My officers will be contacting him soon to arrange an appointment,' said Azam on Saturday (June 7). He added that while the individual is a key witness in the case, MACC has already recorded statements from 45 other witnesses, some of whom have been recalled to assist further in the investigation. 'He is indeed one of the individuals we have yet to question, but we already have testimonies from other witnesses. I cannot confirm whether additional witnesses will be required after his statement,' Azam said. According to sources, MACC had earlier obtained medical confirmation from the doctor regarding the Tan Sri's condition before proceeding to plan for his interview. The investigation centres around the suspected misappropriation of sukuk bonds intended for the construction of a highway. On June 3 last year, MACC disclosed that they had seized assets valued about RM143mil from the individual as part of the probe. This included luxury vehicles and properties owned by the Tan Sri, both locally and abroad, including in London and Switzerland. The seized assets comprised 14 personal bank accounts totalling RM4.5mil, eight company accounts with RM33mil, a luxury condominium and a parcel of land valued at RM24.5mil, nine luxury cars worth RM7.65mil, designer watches valued at around RM25mil, handbags worth RM3mil, jewellery and diamonds estimated at RM6mil, and four horses valued at RM400,000. Other seized items include high-end alcoholic beverages worth RM3mil, foreign assets estimated at over RM15mil, and gambling-related activities involving about RM20mil. Azam said asset declaration notices have been handed to the Tan Sri and other related parties.

TH Travel denies link with fake Haji package programme
KUALA LUMPUR: TH Travel & Services Sdn Bhd (TH Travel) has denied it's connection with a fake programme known as 'Program Haji Infaq Masyarakat' which allegedly offers TH Travel-managed hajj packages priced at RM123,990 with an initial payment of as little as RM10,000. TH Travel, in a statement, said the company has never appointed any individual, external company or business entity to promote, manage or receive payment on behalf of TH Travel for any hajj or umrah packages. The statement said that as a hajj and umrah travel agency registered and fully regulated by the Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH), all payments related to registration and deposits for hajj packages operated by TH Travel can only be made through TH's official account. 'TH Travel does not offer subsidised or externally sponsored packages that require pilgrims to pay into unofficial or individual accounts. 'TH Travel is not involved in any form of fundraising through cleaning companies, cake businesses or third party intermediaries,' the statement said. TH Travel takes seriously the misuse of the company's name and reputation to deceive Muslims intending to perform the Hajj pilgrimage. 'We understand that a police report has been lodged and an investigation is underway by the authorities and TH Travel is prepared to provide full cooperation to the Royal Malaysia Police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in handling this case,' the statement said.
