How Wisconsin transfer A.J. Storr performed in Kansas' 2OT loss to Houston

USA Today26-01-2025

Wisconsin transfer guard A.J. Storr was a big story from No. 12 Kansas' double-overtime loss to No. 7 Houston on Saturday, and not in a good way.

Storr was scoreless during 18 minutes of action, going 0-of-six from the field, 0-of-three from three-point range and 0-of-four from the free-throw line. His only additions to the stat sheet were a rebound and an assist.

The performance halted Storr's recent stretch of strong play dating back to a Jan. 18 win over Kansas State. It also played an integral role in the outcome of the tightly-contested game.
The Wisconsin transfer was on the court during the closing moments of double overtime. He went to the free-throw line with Kansas trailing 88-84 with 45 seconds remaining. Two makes were critical to the Jayhawks' chance at a signature victory.
Storr, a career 77% free-throw shooter, missed both. Houston then added several makes at the line to ice the game.
Kansas as a team went just 17-of-30 from the free-throw line on the evening, including Storr's four misses. That mark is accentuated by a six-of-14 conversion rate during the two overtime periods. Jayhawks head coach Bill Self was asked postgame whether fatigue played a role in the team's heightened late-game struggles in the area.
'I don't know, I don't know,' Self said. 'But certainly, you have go to the line and make two, or at least make one. We were six-of-14 in overtime from the line. So that obviously played a role. We still had our chances to put it away if we just executed better, if I had done a better job.'
As indicated, Storr wasn't alone in his struggles in that area. Forward Flory Bidunga missed a pair of key free throws early in the first overtime period, while guard Dajuan Harris Jr.'s two late misses led to a game-deciding sequence: Kansas led 79-73 with 18 seconds remaining in the first overtime. Harris Jr. missed two free throws, Houston hit a three-pointer with eight seconds left (79-76), Kansas turned the ball over on the inbounds pass, and Houston made another late three to tie the game at 79.
I haven't seen anyone clip the entire sequence, from missed FTs all the way to 79-79. Maybe the most unexpected 14 seconds of the season. https://t.co/NCC1NFYq6B pic.twitter.com/L58dIFO3sz
— Will Warren (@statsbywill) January 26, 2025
According to KenPom, Houston had just a 0.4% win probability when Kansas had the ball, a six-point lead and free throw attempts with 18 seconds remaining in the first overtime. It turned that circumstance into one of the most improbable wins of recent memory.
The result dropped Kansas to 15-4 on the season and 5-3 in Big 12 play. Houston, on the other hand, is now 16-3 overall and 8-0 in-conference.
The AJ Storr addition hasn't exactly been what anyone in Lawrence had hoped for.

Storr's scoreless performance dropped his per-game averages to 17.9 minutes, 6.6 points, 2.1 rebounds and one assist on 40% shooting and 26.7% from three. Those totals are all far below what was expected when the former Badger made his high-profile transfer move to the Jayhawks.

This article originally appeared on The much-anticipated pitcher's duel between Paul Skenes and Jacob Misiorowski at American Family Field turned one-sided. Skenes (4-7) lasted only 4.0 innings while Misiorowski (3-0) continued his early dominance as the Pittsburgh Pirates were defeated 4-2 by the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday afternoon. How We Got There The Brewers (45-36) scored four runs against Skenes in the bottom of the second inning. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Joey Ortiz hit a dribbler back to the mound but brought home a run on the groundout. Advertisement Eric Hasse followed with an RBI double to shallow center to put Milwaukee ahead 2-0. After the lineup flipped over, Sal Frelick hit a grounder to second baseman Nick Gonzales, who delivered an errant throw home which allowed another run to score. Kansas, Bill Self Receive Major Recruiting News on Wednesday

Kansas, Bill Self Receive Major Recruiting News on Wednesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The college basketball recruiting cycle never really ends. As June winds down, players are still shifting schools while coaches continue shaping their rosters for the 2025-26 season. Advertisement Kansas head coach Bill Self got a boost on Wednesday, landing a key frontcourt addition who could make an impact in Big 12 play. The Jayhawks picked up Paul Mbiya, a 6-foot-11, 260-pound center with a 7-foot-7 wingspan. Mbiya adds size, depth and much-needed rim protection to a Kansas team with Final Four aspirations. Joe Tipton of On3 Sports broke the news: "Congolese big man Paul Mbiya, a former NC State signee, has committed to Kansas, source tells @On3Recruits. The 6-11, 260-pound 20-year-old center boasts a 7-7 wingspan." Mbiya hit the open market last week after decommitting from the NC State Wolfpack, where he had been pledged for just over a month. Kansas beat out Dana Altman and the Oregon Ducks for his services. Advertisement Mbiya began his development at the NBA Academy Africa before moving to France to play for ASVEL Villeurbanne, where he averaged 15.5 points and 11.6 rebounds per game. Kansas Jayhawks head coach Bill Self.© Christopher Creveling-Imagn Images He becomes the second major pickup for Kansas in as many days. The Jayhawks also added Kohl Rosario, bringing the scholarship count to 13 of the 14 available spots. Mbiya will likely compete with Flory Bidunga for minutes at the center position. His commitment likely ends Kansas' pursuit of fellow bigs Ege Demir and Brice Dessert. The Jayhawks are looking to bounce back after a frustrating 21-13 campaign, including an 11-9 mark in Big 12 play. Their season began with a No. 1 ranking in the Associated Press preseason poll and ended in disappointment with a first-round loss in the NCAA Tournament to John Calipari's Arkansas Razorbacks. Advertisement Kansas has reloaded and retooled. With Mbiya in the mix, they're once again aiming for a deep March run. Misiorowski outduels Skenes in matchup of young NL pitching phenoms as Brewers top Pirates 4-2

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Making his third major league start, Jacob Misiorowski threw five shutout innings and the Milwaukee Brewers earned a 4-2 victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates and Paul Skenes on Wednesday. Misiorowski (3-0) allowed two hits, walked two and struck out eight and threw 74 pitches and lowered his ERA to 1.13 for the Brewers, who took two of three in the series and climbed a season-high nine games over .500. Misiorowski, 23, entered the game having given up one hit and two runs in 11 innings over his first two outings since being promoted from Triple-A Nashville on June 12. Skenes, also 23 and the reigning NL Rookie of the Year and a starter in the 2024 All-Star Game, allowed all four runs in the second inning. Skenes (4-7) gave up four hits with two walks and four strikeouts and threw 78 pitches for the Pirates. The Brewers sent nine batters to the plate in the second inning. After loading the bases with no outs, Milwaukee scored its first run on Joey Ortiz's ground out dribbler to Skenes. Eric Haase followed with a bloop double to drive in another. The Brewers extended the lead when Sal Frelick grounded into a fielder's choice, while Christian Yelich capped the scoring with an RBI single. Trevor Megill earned his 18th save for the Brewers. Oneil Cruz, who was in the starting lineup for the Pirates after being removed from Tuesday night's game for failing to run out a double play grounder, reached on a two-base error in the seventh and scored on Tommy Pham's single. Spencer Horwitz's double scored the other run for the Pirates in the eighth. Key moment The Pirates threated in the fourth when Bryan Reynolds led off with a single for the first hit off Misiorowski and Horwitz followed with a walk. But Misiorowski got Nick Gonzales to ground into a double play and then struck out Cruz to end the inning. Key stat Skenes gave up four hits, four runs and a walk, in a 37-pitch second inning. Up next The Pirates have not announced a starter for Friday's series opener vs. the Mets in Pittsburgh. Left-hander José Quintana (5-2, 2.98) will start for the Brewers at home on Friday in the first of a three-game series against the Rockies. ___ AP MLB:
