Mets ace Kodai Senga could rejoin rotation next weekend in Kansas City
Senga allowed four runs–three earned–and six hits in 3 2/3 innings during Saturday's minor league injury rehabilitation start for Double-A Binghamton at Hartford. Senga struck out four, walked two, and threw 44 of 68 pitches for strikes. 'Physically he feels fine,' manager Carlos Mendoza said Sunday before the Mets concluded their three-game series against the Yankees. 'So we'll see how today, tomorrow, how they go and hopefully he's making a start for us next time.'
Senga was injured covering first base on a grounder by CJ Abrams when he made a leaping catch on Pete Alonso's throw June 12 against Washington.
Senga is 7–3 with a 1.47 ERA in 13 starts this season for the Mets, whose starters had a major league-best 2.78 ERA at the time of his injury. The Mets lost 14 of 17 after Senga's injury, then won four straight with a patchwork rotation that included two openers and Justin Hagenman's first big league start. 'He's a big part of this team,' Mendoza said of Senga. 'He's a big part of the rotation. For us to be able to get him back this quickly (is big) because we thought when he went down, in my head I was more like after the All-Star break, and then for him to be in play for us now before we go into the All-Star break is huge for us.'
Mendoza also said Sean Manaea may start Sunday in Kansas City. Manaea is slated to make his fifth rehab start and sixth overall appearance Tuesday. Manaea has been sidelined since spring training with a strained right oblique and had a rehab outing pushed back because of elbow discomfort to a bone chip. The left-hander received a cortisone shot and threw 60 pitches in three innings Wednesday for Binghamton at Hartford.
The Mets have 13 pitchers on the injured list and entered Sunday with the fourth-best rotation ERA at 3.38.

Short-Handed Dodgers May Be Forced to Make Roster Moves After Astros Sweep
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts could do little to counteract Houston Astros left-handers Bennett Sousa and Bryan King in the seventh and eighth innings of Sunday's 5–1 loss. Three of Roberts' four right-handed hitting reserves – Teoscar Hernández, Kiké Hernández, and switch-hitter Tommy Edman – were unavailable because of minor injuries, which could force the Dodgers to make a roster move to bolster their bench depth before Monday night's series opener at Milwaukee. That forced left fielder Michael Conforto, second baseman Hyeseong Kim, and catcher Dalton Rushing, all lefties, to bat against Sousa and King, who threw scoreless innings to help the Astros sweep a three-game series in Dodger Stadium for the first time since 2008. 'Today we had one player available, and that was the catcher,' Roberts said, referring to All-Star starter Will Smith, who is healthy but was given the day off. 'That's not a good feeling.' For all the latest headlines, follow our Google News channel online or via the app. Teoscar Hernández, who is batting .257 with a .758 OPS, 14 home runs, and 54 RBIs, fouled a ball off his left foot Saturday night. A scan of the foot was negative, but he was too sore to play Sunday and will be reevaluated on Monday. Edman, who is batting .239 with a .718 OPS, 10 home runs, and 38 RBIs, fractured his toe when he fouled a ball off his right foot on Saturday, but Roberts said the utility player should be able to play through the injury. 'It's kind of per his (pain) tolerance,' Roberts said, 'so I don't see an (injured list) situation.' Kiké Hernández, a utility player who is batting .195 with eight home runs and 22 RBIs in 71 games, has been playing with left-elbow discomfort for about a month and seems the most likely of the three to go on the injured list Monday or Tuesday. 'It doesn't affect the defense, but his swing has been compromised – yesterday (Saturday) it came to a head as far as swinging, and so we stayed away from him today (Sunday),' Roberts said. 'So with these three guys we're trying to figure out where we're at.'

Sounders Goalkeeper Stefan Frei Driven Off Field by Ambulance With Apparent Head Injury
Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei was driven off the field by ambulance with an apparent head injury at the end of a Major League Soccer match against the Columbus Crew on Sunday. Frei jumped forward to make a play on a free kick and as he came down, his head collided with the knee of a Crew player. Frei dropped to the turf at Lumen Field, and teammates signaled to the sideline for help. With the match tied at 1–1 deep in stoppage time, Crew coach Wilfried Nancy and Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer appealed to the referee to end it. As Frei was stretchered to the waiting ambulance, Seattle fans chanted his first name. Frei, 39, has played for the Sounders since 2014. He helped Seattle win the MLS Cup in 2016 and 2019, and he was named MLS Cup MVP in 2016. He was an All-Star in 2017. Born in Switzerland, Frei's family moved to the US when he was a teenager, and he was a standout at the University of California.
