All police to be trained in MAP-Drugs app as Karnataka steps up anti-narcotics drive
BENGALURU: In an effort to make Karnataka a drug-free state, all police officials and relevant department personnel across the state will undergo training on the use of the MAP-Drugs app. District-wise targets will also be set to control drug abuse and sub-committees modelled on the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) will be established to coordinate efforts. These directions were issued during the 6th state-level Narco Coordination Committee meeting, chaired by Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, at Vidhana Soudha on Tuesday. DG & IGP M A Saleem, Narcotics and Organised Crime (Cyber Command Unit) head Pronab Mohanty, Additional Chief Secretary Mohammed Mohsin and other senior officials were present. According to a press release, the chief secretary emphasised the need for police and other department officials to adopt the MAP-Drugs app and instructed that drug-related information be made available in Kannada on government websites. She also urged districts to follow the Belagavi model in tackling drug abuse. To prevent drug trafficking, Rajneesh called for intensified checks at airports and recommended including customs officials in coordination meetings. She also directed action against unregistered pharmaceutical companies and mandated that all pharmacies display boards stating: Sale without doctor's prescription is prohibited. She called for strengthening monitoring mechanisms to regulate the sale of red-listed drugs. Rajneesh also called for improved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for managing de-addiction centres and directed that the public be informed about available services. Deputy commissioners were instructed to visit at least one de-addiction centre every month and submit reports. She also stressed the importance of conducting drug tests in hostels using testing kits and taking action against positive cases.

Lapses in food safety persist in Telangana schools despite SOPs, multiple poisoning cases reported
HYDERABAD: The Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) introduced by the state's School Education department to maintain food quality in government-run schools and hostels have not been fully enforced, despite multiple food poisoning incidents being reported annually from these institutions. The SOPs, launched in September last year on a pilot basis in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) hostels and urban residential schools, were later claimed to have been implemented across all government, social welfare, tribal welfare and minority educational institutions in the state. However, reports from the ground suggest otherwise. Several recent and past food poisoning cases, including those at Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Gurukul School in Laxmipur mandal (Jagtial district), Mudigonda Tribal Ashram Girls School, Government High School in Munaganoor, and Tribal Ashram High Schools in Asifabad and Mancherial, point to continued lapses in hygiene and food safety protocols. According to sources, self-help groups assigned to prepare mid-day meals in many schools often do not follow basic food safety norms. Meals are reportedly left uncovered, raw materials are poorly stored, cleanliness is not maintained, and supervision is minimal. Though the SOPs called for the formation of task forces to oversee food quality, this has not been implemented effectively, largely due to staff shortages and lack of dedicated funds. A key reason for weak enforcement, according to Telangana State United Teachers' Federation (TSUTF) General Secretary Chava Ravi, is the absence of Mandal Education Officers (MEOs) in most areas. 'Out of 620 mandals, only 16 have regular MEOs. In the rest, senior teachers or headmasters are handling additional responsibilities. This has led to poor supervision and failure to implement SOPs,' he said. Asif Hussain Sohail, president of the Telangana Parents Association for Child Rights and Safety, said the SOP initiative was positive in intent but poorly executed. 'In most state-run institutions, including SC/ST hostels and minority schools, there is no proper monitoring. We have made repeated representations, but no real action has been taken. The recent food poisoning cases are not isolated incidents – they reflect systemic negligence.'

Raj to promote medical tourism at global healthcare summits
Jaipur: The state govt will participate in global healthcare summits to showcase Rajasthan's progress in medical value travel (MVT). The medical education department said that they will attend national and international fairs, adding that the successful implementation of Rajasthan's MVT under Heal in Rajasthan (HIR) policy will require a structured year-wise action plan, clear resource allocation, and close coordination among key departments and partners. Under the newly formulated HIR policy on MVT, the state govt will launch targeted campaigns focusing on specific geographic areas or medical specialties to attract patient flow in the state. The govt will facilitate the upgradation of hospitals to international accreditation standards (NABH/JCI). The MVT cell will ensure all empanelled hospitals under MVT have regular staff training. It will liaise with the nursing council and national medical commission for the integration of MVT-specific curriculum (language, soft skills, etc. ). Cultural sensitisation programs for healthcare workers and support staff to understand and respect the cultural norms and expectations of patients coming in from different regions shall be encouraged, said a medical education department official. The MVT cell will liaise with the department of AYUSH for mainstreaming wellness treatments. For promoting standardisation and ethical practices, the MVT cell will develop standard operating procedures and guidelines for the MVT stakeholders. A separate and independent body will be established for the timely resolution of disputes. The govt will encourage hospitals to adopt and use cutting-edge technologies for treatment and diagnostic purposes. The official said that govt will undertake interventions for the development of MVT infrastructure by promoting the development of new multi-speciality hospitals in line with international standards by encouraging them to invest in Rajasthan, leveraging incentives offered by various existing state policies. Public health institutes will be encouraged to develop facilities to attract medical value travellers. It will promote the development of MVT hubs with all the necessary facilities established under one roof, which may include tertiary care hospitals, attendants' accommodation, testing centres, diagnostic labs, rehabilitation centres and wellness centres.
