Kevin Roy and Aldrich Potgieter shoot Rocket Classic-record 62s to share 1st-round lead
DETROIT (AP) — Kevin Roy and Aldrich Potgieter each shot 10-under 62 on Thursday to break the Rocket Classic record and share the first-round lead. Detroit Golf Club has been one of the easiest courses since the PGA Tour made it an annual stop in 2019. A pair of Korn Ferry graduates took full advantage. Potgieter, the 20-year-old South African who grew up in Australia, started at No. 10 and set a tournament record with a 7-under 29 on the back nine. He added three birdies on his back nine and caught the left edge on a 12-foot putt on his final hole. Potgieter and the 35-year-old Roy each had an eagle and eight birdies in bogey-free rounds. As well as Roy and Potgieter played, they can't get comfortable on a short course with greens that are even more receptive than usual with recent rain. Min Woo Lee, Max Greyserman and Mark Hubbard were a stroke back after matching the previous tournament record of 63. Andrew Putnam shot a 64, and two-time major champion Zach Johnson was in the group another shot back. While the course is easy as usual, the competition is relatively strong for the tournament that many top players have skipped in the past. The field includes nine of the top 50 players in the world, led by fifth-ranked Collin Morikawa, who opened with a 69. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley, the Travelers Championship winner last week, is No. 7 in the world. He shot a 68. Devon Conway out of New Zealand squad for T20 tri-series vs. Zimbabwe and South Africa
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Devon Conway has been omitted from new Black Caps head coach Rob Walter's first squad, which will play a Twenty20 tri-series against host Zimbabwe and South Africa next month. The veteran batsman is one of several leading players who have turned down central contacts with New Zealand Cricket to play in professional T20 leagues overseas. Conway last played for New Zealand in June last year, in its last group match at the T20 World Cup. Former captain Kane Williamson made himself unavailable while playing for Middlesex in England's county championship. Auckland batter Bevon Jacobs is the only uncapped player in the 15-man squad named by Walter on Friday. The 23-year-old Jacobs was a member of the New Zealand squad that played Sri Lanka in December but did not play a game. Fast bowler Adam Milne has been recalled for the first time since November after performing well in Major League Cricket in the United States. Batters Finn Allen and Tim Seifert also return to the squad which will be captained by Mitchell Santner. Allen recently hit a world-record 19 sixes in an innings of 151 for the San Francisco Unicorns in Major League Cricket. 'We've got a really strong squad for this tour and I'm looking forward to getting the team together and getting into the work,' Walter said. Barry Bonds will be getting a statue outside the Giants' ballpark, team CEO says
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Barry Bonds will be getting a statue outside the San Francisco Giants' home stadium where he set baseball's career home run record, the team's CEO said Thursday. Giants President and Chief Executive Officer Larry Baer was asked during a radio interview about a statue for Bonds, and he responded that it was 'on the radar.' But Baer didn't have any details of when that would happen. 'Barry is certainly deserving of a statue, and I would say should be next up,' Baer said during an appearance on San Francisco's 95.7 The Game. 'We don't have the exact location and the exact date and the exact timing. … It's coming. All I can say is it's coming.' Bonds played for San Francisco the last 15 of his 22 big league seasons, hitting 586 of his 762 homers while with the Giants from 1993-2007. He set the single-season MLB record with 73 homers in 2001, and hit his record-breaking 756th homer to pass Hank Aaron in a home game off Washington's Mike Bacsik on Aug. 7, 2007. There are currently five statues outside Oracle Park, those of Hall of Famers Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Juan Marichal, Gaylord Perry and Orlando Cepeda. The Giants retired Bonds' No. 25 jersey in 2018. Bonds, a seven-time MVP and 14-time All-Star, is not in the Hall of Fame. He failed to reach the 75% threshold required during his 10 years on the Baseball Writers Association of America's Hall of Fame ballot, mostly because of steroids allegations that dogged him during his final years with the Giants. The Contemporary Player Committee also passed on electing Bonds in 2022, though the committee could reconsider Bonds' status.
