The once-busy Hurriyat Conference headquarters in Rajbagh has been shut since 2019, and its constituents have been banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and BSP chief Mayawati on Tuesday expressed grief over the death of Satyapal Malik, the former governor of Jammu and Kashmir. In a post on X in Hindi, CM Adityanath said, "The demise of former governor Satyapal Malik ji is extremely sad. Humble tribute! My condolences are with the bereaved family. I pray to God to grant salvation to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family to bear this sorrow. Om Shanti!" Condoling the death of Malik, BSP chief Mayawati in a post on X in Hindi said, "The news of the death of Shri Satyapal Malik, who was the governor of many states, including Jammu and Kashmir, today is very sad. My deepest condolences to his bereaved family and all his supporters. May nature give them the strength to bear this sorrow." Malik (79) died on Tuesday at a hospital in New Delhi after a prolonged illness, his personal staff said. He was 79. Malik, who had also held the positions of governor of Goa, Bihar, Meghalaya, and Odisha, besides being a member of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha in his long political career, died at 1.12 pm at the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital in New Delhi. He was in the ICU of the hospital for a long time, getting treatment for various ailments, the staff said. In his gubernatorial role in Jammu and Kashmir, Malik oversaw the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories on August 5, 2019. Coincidentally, he took his last breath on the sixth anniversary of the Centre's move. Malik attracted a lot of controversy after alleging that he was offered a bribe to clear files of two major projects in Jammu and Kashmir and questioned the BJP-led central government over issues related to farmers and the Pulwama terror attack, among others.

UP: Man get life imprisonment for raping minor girl
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Maharajganj (UP), Aug 5 (PTI) A court in Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj on Tuesday sentenced a 49-year-old man to rigorous life imprisonment for raping a minor girl in 2023. Special Judge (POCSO) PC Kushwaha also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on Ramkesh Yadav and said if he failed to deposit the fine, he would get two months of additional jail sentence, according to Assistant District Government Counsel Vijay Narayan Singh. According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on October 9, 2023 in the Parsamalik police station area of the district. Based on a police complaint by the 12-year-old girl's father, a case was lodged against Yadav under relevant sections of the law, including IPC section 376 (rape) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. HC lauds successful relocation of hawkers in Meghalaya
Agency: PTI Shillong, Aug 5 (PTI) The Meghalaya High Court on Tuesday lauded the 'peaceful and successful" implementation of the relocation of roadside vendors from Khyndailad area here. The court's observation was based on a report submitted by Special Officer Subhasis Chakrawarty, who was appointed by it to supervise the process. 'It appears from this report and the submission made before us that the exercise has been peaceful and successful," a bench headed by Chief Justice I P Mukerji said. According to government records, a digital survey conducted between December 2023 and January 2024 identified 1,400 street vendors across 23 locations in Shillong. Of these, about 760 vendors were found to be eligible under the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014. In the Khyndailad area alone, 457 vendors were surveyed and 407 declared eligible. The Shillong Municipal Board has since begun relocating the licensed vendors to designated vending zones in various parts of the city. As part of the rehabilitation process, the state government has sanctioned Rs 20,000 per relocated vendor as compensation, and on Tuesday, the first installment of Rs 10,000 was disbursed to hawkers, who had shifted to the new vending zones. However, the Shillong Roadside Hawkers' Association submitted representations on July 25 and August 1, alleging that several eligible vendors were arbitrarily left out of the final list and denied vending certificates. Taking note of the complaints, the Special Officer wrote to the Chief Executive Officer of the Shillong Municipal Board on July 29, seeking a response. The Board's counsel assured the court that a detailed affidavit would be filed. The case will be heard again on August 13.
