UAE, Philippines trade talks look at strengthening investment ties

The UAE and the Philippines have held trade talks following the signing of a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) last July, with an aim at enhance trade cooperation and investment opportunities. The meeting between the UAE delegation, led by Minister of Foreign Trade, Dr. Thain bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, and the Philippines Business Council in the UAE, looked at ways to build and expand partnerships between the business communities and the private sector on both sides. During the meeting, Al Zeyoudi highlighted the growing economic partnership between the two countries, with non-oil trade growing to over $257.7 million in the first half of 2025. In 2024, the total volume of non-oil trade reached approximately $940 million. The UAE is the Philippines' top export market among Arab and African countries as well as its 17th largest globally, demonstrating the strong foundation on which both nations can further expand collaboration. "The Philippines is a key trading partner for the UAE in the growing ASEAN region, and we are committed to fostering stronger ties at all levels," Dr. Al Zeyoudi stated. With a significant Filipino diaspora residing in the UAE, working primarily in sectors such as construction, healthcare and hospitality, the meeting also aimed to explore how these communities can further contribute to mutual prosperity from the growing economic ties. The UAE-Philippines CEPA represents a significant addition to the UAE's global trade programme. The CEPA is forecast to increase the UAE's GDP by $2.4 billion and increase exports to the Philippines to $7.62 billion by 2032.

Flydubai to add 12 aircraft in 2025 but still 20 short of goal

Flydubai will receive 12 new aircraft this year, though it remains 20 planes behind its original delivery projections, the airline's chief executive said Thursday. The Dubai-based carrier has taken delivery of seven Boeing 737 MAX 8s in 2025, with five more expected before year-end, bringing its fleet to 93 aircraft. In a report on Khaleej Times, CEO Ghaith Al Ghaith said the deliveries are part of a backlog that has been delayed in recent years, impacting the airline's expansion plans. Airlines in the UAE and globally have faced delays in aircraft deliveries, with Flydubai noting last year that Boeing's updated schedule had significantly affected its growth strategy. Despite the challenges, Flydubai has added 11 new destinations this year, including Antalya, Al Alamein, Damascus and Peshawar. Four more European destinations — Chisinau, Iasi, Vilnius and Riga — are scheduled to launch between September and December, expanding the carrier's network to more than 135 destinations in 57 countries. Financing for the first seven aircraft delivered this year has come from a mix of Islamic financing through Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, conventional debt from the National Bank of Ras Al Khaimah, and sale-leaseback agreements with JP Lease Products & Services and JLPS Ireland Limited. Al Ghaith said the additional aircraft will help the airline open new routes, optimize operations and strengthen Dubai's role as an international aviation hub.

Gold subdued as hot US data lifts dollar, yields; cools hopes for jumbo Fed cut

Gold prices were subdued on Thursday as hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation data and a drop in jobless claims lifted the dollar and Treasury yields, trimming the odds of a supersized September rate cut. Spot gold fell 0.1% to $3,352.65 per ounce as of 9:15 a.m. ET (1315 GMT). U.S. gold futures for December delivery were down 0.2% to $3,400.60. The dollar index gained 0.2% from an over two-week low, making bullion less attractive for non-U.S. buyers, while benchmark 10-year yields edged up from a one-week low. Stronger U.S. wholesale price data tempered bets on a larger, half-point cut next month. Traders are now leaning toward a quarter-point move with another in October, reinforcing comments from Fed's Mary Daly that such a large cut is not needed. The Labor Department reported the producer price index rose 3.3% year-on-year in July, beating forecasts of 2.5%. Weekly jobless claims also came in lower than expected, at 224,000 versus 228,000 forecast. "Gold trades lower as the stronger than expected U.S. PPI print may lower rate cut hopes (expectations) as they feed into a higher Core PCE inflation print for July as well, likely keeping the Federal Reserve cautious on rate cuts," said Saxo Bank's head of commodity strategy, Ole Hansen. "Overall, the print does not alter our bullish view on gold as the Fed eventually will have to choose between fighting inflation or supporting the economy." Gold, a traditional refuge in times of economic or geopolitical strain, tends to benefit from low interest rates. Investors also kept an eye on geopolitical risks. U.S. President Donald Trump warned of "severe consequences" if Russian President Vladimir Putin rejects a Ukraine peace proposal at their upcoming summit, hinting at a subsequent meeting with Ukraine's leader. Elsewhere, spot silver lost 1% to $38.11 per ounce, platinum gained 1% to $1,352.60 and palladium rose 1.7% to $1,140.81. (Reporting by Sherin Elizabeth Varghese in Bengaluru; Editing by Leroy Leo)
