Mumbai court issues non-bailable warrant against Mehul Choksi in loan fraud case
Choksi, a prime accused in the multi-million dollar Punjab National Bank (PNB) 'fraud', was arrested in Belgium on April 12 following an extradition request by Indian probe agencies.
The non-bailable warrant against him was issued recently by Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (Esplanade Court) R B Thakur.
The matter has been adjourned to June 2 for a report on the warrant.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has alleged that the Canara Bank and the Bank of Maharashtra had sanctioned Rs 30 crore and Rs 25 crore, respectively, as working capital facilities under a consortium agreement to Bezel Jewellery.
The loan was granted for the manufacturing and sale of gold and diamond-studded jewellery, but the company allegedly did not use it for the intended purposes, according to the CBI.
The company did not repay the loan, causing a loss of Rs 55.27 crore to the consortium, the agency has alleged.
Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are prime accused in the Rs 13,500-crore PNB 'fraud'.
While Choksi is fighting for bail in a court in Belgium, Nirav Modi has been in jail in London since 2019.

Bihar Police arrest over 54k in seven months
1 2 Patna: From cracking down on heinous crimes to seizing illegal liquor and firearms, Bihar Police reported a strict enforcement drive between Jan and July 2025. In this seven-month period, over 54,900 accused were arrested, convictions were secured in more than 46,000 cases, and fines totalling over Rs 14.6 crore were imposed on traffic rule violators. The drive also saw large-scale execution of warrants, preventive actions against lakhs of people, and major seizures of narcotics, liquor and arms, said additional director general (law and order) Pankaj Kumar Darad, while addressing a press conference on Monday. He said execution of warrants and other legal orders was robust, with 234,366 summons, 171,561 bailable warrants and 189,932 non-bailable warrants issued from Jan to June 2025. Darad said, "A total of 1,300 criminals were identified for possessing assets acquired through illegal means, with property attachment proposals against 280 of them already submitted to the court. Following this, the court initiated proceedings to seize the assets of seven criminals. Under section 3 of the CCA (Crime Control Act), proposals against 1,662 people were sent to the district magistrates, resulting in orders against 339. Furthermore, under Section 12(1) of the CCA, detention orders were issued against eight criminals, with more actions underway. Further strengthening moves to maintain law and order, 5,174 people were arrested for instigating communal violence, attacks on police, mob violence, and indulging in celebratory firing in the seven month period. Udupi police implement Drishti Project as part of outreach programme
Udupi: As part of the Mane Mane Beti, or door-to-door outreach programme launched in July, Udupi District police launched the Drishti Project. SP Hariram Shankar told reporters on Monday that to curb criminal activities, night patrol arrangements were introduced in selected urban and market areas of the district. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The aim is to effectively prevent theft, crimes against women, and offences involving drug addicts, while also ensuring the safety of commercial establishments, residents living alone, and senior citizens. To strengthen this, a group of 50-100 houses was formed, and security guards were appointed to patrol their assigned areas between 10pm and 6am. Already, 10 groups are functioning. If they come across any suspicious person or incident, they must immediately inform the beat police or the District Police Control Room. The remuneration for the appointed security guards will be borne by the residents. Currently, the Drishti Project has been launched in 12 locations, two each in the Udupi Town, Shirva, and Gangolli police station limits, and one each in the limits of Kundapur, Hebri, Karkala Town, Hiriyadka, Shankaranarayana, and Brahmavar police stations. In the coming days, the programme will be extended to 21 more locations across the district, the SP said. As a continuation of this initiative, Udupi District police, in collaboration with the Udupi District Chamber of Commerce, has planned an ambitious project to install 601 CCTV cameras at 207 junctions and border roads across the district. The estimated cost of this project is around Rs 2.5 crore. The project is called Syena Drishti. In the initial phase, 10 Automatic Number Plate Reader cameras will be installed at the district borders, locations prone to communal tension, and strategic points such as Mala, Hosmaru, and Sacharipete in Karkala Rural police station limits, Sanur in Karkala Town police station limits, Someshwara in Hebri police limits, Amasabailu in Amasebail police station limits, Hosangadi and Dali in Kollur Police station limits, Mel Gangolli in Gangolli police station limits, Malpe Beach in Malpe police station limits, and Udupi City Bus Stand in Udupi Town police station limits. Udupi Chamber of Commerce president Ammunje Prabhakar Nayak and honorary secretary Dr Vijayendra Vasant Kadiyali were present. Additionally, 10 high-quality cameras will be installed at Kalsanka Junction, Karavali Junction, Indrali Bridge, Santhekatte Junction, Service Bus Stand, and Old KSRTC Bus Stand in Udupi City Municipality limits, Mkodi Junction and Kandloor Pete in Kundapur sub-division limits, Baradi and Naravi in Karkala sub-division limits. Footage from these cameras will be continuously monitored by the respective local police stations and the District Police Control Room. "With this, every corner of the district will be covered with CC Cameras, in probably the first of its kind initiative in the country," the SP said.
