Ex-Memphis player accused of sending playbook to opponent in college football shocker

New York Post6 days ago
The Memphis football team appears to have had a mole.
Tahj Ra-El, a former player who has since transferred to Purdue, has been accused of sabotaging the Tigers by sending photos of their playbook to an opposing quarterback before a game last season.
Instagram messages obtained by Tiger Sports Report allegedly show Ra-El — who exited the program in October — sending a picture of the Memphis playbook, along with other information, to UTSA quarterback Owen McCown before the teams clashed on Nov. 2, 2024.

In the alleged exchange, Ra-El sent the playbook and wrote, 'Here you go,' and 'That's all the signals,' with McCown responding with laughing emojis.
Ra-El purportedly sent McCown other information about the Tigers, including a tip about injured safety Kourtlan Marsh.
The Roadrunners ultimately defeated Memphis, 44-36.
'We're on the field, and their offense has a check for every single one of our defenses' checks,' a member of the Tigers' 2024 team told Tiger Sports Report.

Ra-El no longer was with Memphis leading into that game, having announced he would be transferring from Memphis on Oct. 9.
Tigers Sports Report further reported that Ra-El had been dismissed from Memphis during the season, which added incentive for his alleged sabotage.

Purdue Athletics told On3 Sports' Tom Dienhart: 'Our coaching staff sees the scenario as being mischaracterized and does not have any concerns moving forward.'
American Conference commissioner Tim Pernetti commented on the incident as well, downplaying concerns about the head-turning allegations.
'I'm aware of the situation. I've had very open dialogue with [UTSA] coach [Jeff] Traylor and [Memphis] coach [Ryan] Silverfield about it,' Pernetti said. 'They're going to address it. There's not really much to this story. I think a lot of it has been sensationalized and is much ado about nothing.'
Ra-El declined to comment to Tiger Sports Report about the allegations.

LeBron James posts image of himself with Clippers logo in background

All of a sudden, not as many people are talking about LeBron James possibly asking the Los Angeles Lakers to trade him. That talk has largely subsided as the realities of how difficult it would be to pull off a trade that would land him on an instant title contender have seemingly sunk in. But many feel James has been dropping passive-aggressive hints that he may want to move on. Earlier this offseason, he had a couple of social media posts of himself in his native Ohio, including one at the Cleveland Cavaliers' facility. The latest such post shows him working out in a room that has the Los Angeles Clippers' logo positioned behind him. The accompanying caption on that Instagram post read as follows: "Say whatever you want but you damn sure won't be able to say I didn't put in the WORK!! . We'll see what happens when I no longer exist. Man [expletive] this [expletive]." This could be a big nothing as far as which team James will play for in the coming months, and it's always possible he's simply looking to mess with people who love to speculate about him. Of course, since it is him, and since he is infamously passive-aggressive, people will wonder what this post is really all about.

Gleyber Torres and Eugenio Suarez Agree, The Tigers Need to Acquire the Slugger

Gleyber Torres and Eugenio Suarez Agree, The Tigers Need to Acquire the Slugger originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Detroit Tigers raced out to a huge lead in the AL Central in the first half of the season. Since the All-Star break, though, they have been one of the worst teams in the league. If they listened to one of their All Stars, the front office would make the biggest trade of deadline season and get Eugenio Suárez out of Arizona. Gleyber Torres said Tuesday that, 'It's going to be awesome,' if the team is able to make the deal come to fruition. '"He treats people the right way. He's easy to talk to. He always wants to help the players. It would be a really, really good addition for us." Torres and Suárez were teammates on Team Venezuela during the World Baseball Classic. The time together made a big impact on Torres; he speaks glowingly of his former and possibly-future teammate. "I think he's a better person than player…He is a humble guy, an awesome person. I've known him for many years. Our relationship is really good.' Torres is not the only one who wants the Diamondback third baseman in a Tigers uniform. Even Suárez has come out and said he wants to come back to Detroit, the team he began his career with. "To finish where everything started, it would be cool," Suárez said a day before playing in the 2025 MLB All-Star Game. "It would mean a lot to me." He made his debut with the team in 2014 and played 85 games before being traded the following offseason. Suárez understands how much has changed if he were to come back. "Since I was there, it's been a lot different. It's a new team with a lot of young guys and a lot of talent. I think they have a really good chance to make it more than the playoffs this year." They do have a great shot at a deep playoff run, but they are not playing like it right now. After multiple trades for pitchers, it feels like a reunion might be destined to happen. And their second baseman would be thrilled. Join the conversation with us on Facebook and X. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 30, 2025, where it first appeared.

Tigers bolster bullpen and perhaps pitching chaos with righties Finnegan, Morton, Sewald and Heuer

DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers seem to be setting themselves up to potentially go back to what manager A.J. Hinch calls pitching chaos. Detroit bolstered its bullpen, and options in games without a traditional starting pitcher, with a series of moves to add a trio of right-handers in the hours before the trade deadline on Thursday. Then they added a starting veteran starter, too. The Tigers acquired Washington's Kyle Finnegan, Cleveland's Paul Sewald and Texas minor leaguer Codi Heuer for prospects and cash, and also announced a deal shortly after the deadline for 41-year-old Charlie Morton from Baltimore. Detroit made the trades — and one earlier this week — hoping to increase its chances of winning a World Series for the first time in more than four decades. The AL Central-leading Tigers won their fourth straight game with newly acquired starting pitcher Chris Paddack on Wednesday, two days after he was added in a trade with the Minnesota Twins. Later that day, they acquired right-handed reliever Rafael Montero from Atlanta for minor league infielder Jim Jarvis. Detroit has nearly a double-digit game lead in a division suddenly filled with rebuilding teams, including the defending AL Central-champion Guardians, and is vying with Toronto and Houston for the best record in the league. The Tigers, trying to take advantage of ace Tarik Skubal and a balanced lineup, are aiming for their first World Series title since 1984. Morton headlines Thursday's additions. The two-time World Series winner has won 145 games over 18 big league seasons. He's 7-8 with a 5.42 ERA this year, although he's been sharper lately with a 3.98 ERA in 10 starts since June 1. Detroit earned a spot in the playoffs last year for the first time in the decade after a late-season surge, using Hinch's unconventional approach to using relievers to start and pitch in games for an inning or two. The 33-year-old Finnegan was an All-Star in 2024, but his velocity has been down this season. He has 20 saves with a 4.38 ERA in 2025. In the trade for Finnegan, the Tigers sent minor league pitchers Josh Randall and R.J. Sales, Detroit's third and 10th round draft picks from 2024, respectively, to Washington. The 35-year-old Sewald is eligible to return from the injured list on Sunday after being shut down with a strained right shoulder, but he isn't expected to pitch until September. He is 1-1 with a 4.70 ERA in 18 games this season, averaging more than one strikeout each inning. The 29-year-old Heuer, who will report to Triple-A Toledo, was 3-2 with a 3.43 ERA and four saves in 35 games at Triple-A Round Rock this year and pitched in one game for the Rangers. Detroit opens a three-game series Friday night at Philadelphia.
