Khairy excited to play alongside Man Utd legend
The tournament will feature four teams: Team Wizards, Team Bangsa Bola, Team Harimau and Team Zurich.
Former sports minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who is also the manager of Team Wizards, relishes the opportunity to play alongside Giggs, the captain of their side.
"My team is well balanced. We've got Kogileswaran Raj, Indra Putra Mahayuddin, Tengku Fahad Mua'adzam Shah, Hairul Azreen, and of course, me," said Khairy, who is a Man Utd fan.
"But the X-factor in our team is Giggs. I mean, Terry has never been the same ever since he slipped during the penalty kick (in 2008 Champions League final against Man Utd), so he's going to slip all over again."
Khairy quipped Giggs had personally requested to join his team after the latter's recent trip to Malaysia to promote the Man Utd vs Asean All-Stars match last month.
"When Giggs was here recently, he asked me if he could be part of my team. I said okay, no problem. We were supposed to have Paul Scholes, but he couldn't come, so we managed to get Giggs instead," he said.
Khairy couldn't resist taking a jibe at Team Bangsa Bola who are captained by Terry and managed by banker Tan Sri Nazir Razak. "Well, it's Terry and then, you know, it's Nazir. I mean, a banker doesn't know much about football, right?" he said.
"Tan Sri Tony Fernandes' team (Harimau) will be competitive because he's a competitive person, having Safee Sali as the captain.
"There's also Team Zurich led by Junior Cho, featuring Berbatov."
Meanwhile Safee, whose Team Harimau feature Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, Khyril Muhymeen, K. Gurusamy, and Adam Sinclair, said playing with legends like Terry and Giggs is a proud moment for local football.
"To be part of something alongside Terry and Giggs is not ordinary, it's a benchmark for the next generation," he said.

Newcastle sign Germany defender Thiaw from AC Milan
LONDON: Germany international defender Malick Thiaw on Tuesday completed a permanent move to Premier League club Newcastle from AC Milan. The 24-year-old centre-back agreed a long-term deal for an undisclosed fee reported to be worth an initial 35 million euros (US$40 million). "I'm really excited to join this massive club. I can't wait to start training and to get to know my new teammates and all the staff," said Thiaw. "The gaffer (Eddie Howe) showed me his vision and what he wants to do with me as a player and the club itself, which is really exciting. "I think Newcastle speaks for itself. It's a great club, a big club with passionate fans who I can't wait to see at St James' Park." Thiaw – capped three times for Germany – joined AC Milan from Schalke 04 in 2022 and made 85 appearances in all competitions during his three years at the Serie A club. He becomes Newcastle's third summer signing after Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga and Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. "We're really pleased to have Malick on board," said manager Howe. "He's a player I've admired for a long time and somebody who will add real quality to our defensive options. "Malick is still young but brings valuable experience of Champions League football, as well as playing in the Bundesliga and Serie A, which is a major positive for us as we return to Europe this season." Newcastle finished fifth in the Premier League last season and open their latest campaign at Aston Villa on Saturday.--AFP

Soccer-Donnarumma confirms imminent departure from PSG after being axed by Luis Enrique
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - FIFA Club World Cup - Final - Chelsea v Paris St Germain - MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey, U.S. - July 13, 2025 Paris St Germain's Gianluigi Donnarumma looks dejected at half time REUTERS/Lee Smith/File Photo UDINE, Italy (Reuters) -Gianluigi Donnarumma confirmed his imminent departure from Paris St Germain after he was effectively axed from the squad by manager Luis Enrique, who left the Italian keeper out of the Super Cup line-up. Donnarumma played an instrumental role in PSG's treble-winning campaign last season, helping them to finally win the Champions League for the first time. However, the 26-year-old, who joined the club in 2021, has now been left out in the cold. PSG signed French keeper Lucas Chevalier on Saturday, fuelling speculation about Donnarumma's future, and with one year left on his contract, the Italian is now set to move on. "Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team's success," Donnarumma posted on social media on Tuesday. "I am disappointed and disheartened." The keeper's omission from the PSG squad to face Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday was the main focus of the manager's press conference. "These are always hard decisions to make. I can only say good things about Gianluigi Donnarumma," Luis Enrique told reporters. "He is one of the best players in his position, without any doubt. He is even better as a person, but we were looking for a different profile of keeper. "Bearing in mind the level of Gianluigi Donnarumma and everything he has given to the club, of course we understand the situation but my aim is to improve the team and I have tried to do that in the best way possible." Italian reporters were understandably more concerned with the Donnarumma situation than with the match against Spurs, but the PSG manager soon grew tired of the subject. "No more questions on this. It is my decision, it is the club's decision and the club backs me," Luis Enrique said. "We now need to find the best solution for all parties." Donnarumma's next club has yet to be decided, and the keeper would like the chance to bid farewell to the PSG supporters. "I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done," Donnarumma wrote. "If that doesn't happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me and I will never forget it. "Playing for this club and living in this city has been an immense honour. Thank you Paris." PSG captain Marquinhos also spoke about the Donnarumma situation during his press conference. "It is always difficult. I have been here for 12 or 13 years and I have seen other players go through the same thing," the Brazilian defender said. "Life is like that and football is like that. One day I will leave as well, I hope it will be in the best possible conditions but players come and go and the club remains, the fans remain, and history remains. "We don't know if he is going to leave or stay. If he stays of course we will welcome him back with open arms. "Because what he did last season was incredible and it is thanks to him that we reached the final and we won the trophy. But if he has to leave we will thank him." Soccer-Lateness costs Bissouma place in Spurs' Super Cup squad, Solanke fit
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Friendly Match - Bayern Munich v Tottenham Hotspur - Allianz Arena, Munich, Germany - August 7, 2025 Tottenham Hotspur's Yves Bissouma in action with Bayern Munich's Wisdom Mike REUTERS/Angelika Warmuth/File Photo UDINE, Italy (Reuters) -Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Yves Bissouma has been dropped from the squad for Wednesday's Super Cup clash against Paris St Germain due to his tardiness, manager Thomas Frank said. Frank also confirmed that striker Dominic Solanke will be available for the start of the new season despite featuring in only one of Spurs' pre-season friendlies due to an ankle injury. Speaking on Tuesday before the European season curtain-raiser between the Champions League winners and second-tier Europa League champions, Frank said: "Bissouma has been late several times and now this time, it was one too many. "With everything, you need to give your players a lot of love but also have demands and have consequences. And this was the consequence of that." New arrival Joao Palhinha, on loan from Bayern Munich, could play in place of Ivory Coast international Bissouma, though Tottenham will be without playmaker James Maddison, who faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines with an ACL injury. New manager Frank's tenure could start with a gleam of silverware if Spurs manage to defeat European champions PSG, who were beaten by Chelsea in last month's Club World Cup final. The Dane added that a lighter pre-season since Tottenham's Europa League triumph on May 21 could give his comparatively better-rested side an edge over the French team. "We have had a more normal pre-season which is what every coach would prefer. In that way, it can be an advantage. But on the flip side, they have had a long season and played a lot of games recently," Frank said. "It's the right time to face PSG. We are ready. I am 100% convinced that it will be very super competitive tomorrow. "But of course, over the whole season they are in a better place to perform better. But in a single game, we will be ready." Though Spurs are without former captain Son Heung-min after his move to MLS side LAFC, Frank said their Argentine World Cup-winning defender Cristian Romero would be a key figure. "Romero is going to be a very important and experienced player for the team. He is going to be a very, very big player for us tomorrow," he said. "He is someone who has been in big finals and won them. He definitely knows how to win them." (Reporting by Shifa Jahan in Bengaluru; Editing by Ken Ferris)
