Wings Rookie Paige Bueckers Makes WNBA History vs Dream
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Dallas Wings are one of the bottom three teams in the WNBA this season, but rookie guard Paige Bueckers has been the team's lone bright spot. The 23-year-old No. 1 overall pick is Dallas' leading scorer (18.2 points per game), and she also leads the team in assists (5.5 per game), steals (1.9 per game), and minutes per night (34.4). In Wednesday's 88-85 loss to the Atlanta Dream, Bueckers put forth another strong performance, only strengthening her case for Rookie of the Year. The UConn alum logged a game-high 21 points, seven assists, two rebounds, and a steal, and she wrote her name in the WNBA record book in the process. "Paige Bueckers now has the most games by a rookie in WNBA history with: 20+ PTS, 5+ AST, 0 TOV," Polymarket Hoops wrote on X. But that wasn't the only record Bueckers attained on Wednesday. She also matched a historic feat accomplished by WNBA legend Cynthia Cooper. Red Sox rookie stays hot as teammates rave: ‘Yordan Alvarez, that's my player comp'
BOSTON — Red Sox rookie sensation Roman Anthony found himself right in the middle of another big win over the Dodgers on Sunday. So much so, in fact, that two teammates with World Series rings offered lofty comps for the 21-year-old. Anthony, after reaching base four times in Boston's win over Los Angeles on Saturday night, changed the game Sunday afternoon when he made it a one-run game by scraping an RBI triple off the Green Monster in the bottom of the fifth. He then trotted home on Alex Bregman's go-ahead homer that put the Red Sox ahead for good. • Sign up for Red Sox columnist Sean McAdam's exclusive newsletter Bregman was the hero for the second straight Sunday. But the two-time champion pointed to Anthony — who in the leadoff spot was hitting in front of him for the first time — as a game-changer. 'Roman has been awesome,' said Bregman, unsolicited. 'Four times on base last night, gets on his first at-bat today and then hits a big triple. He's doing it. He's going to be a special, special player. It's definitely fun hitting in front of or behind him in this lineup. It reminds me of earlier in my career when Yordan Alvarez got called up. That's my player comp for him.' A comparison to Alvarez, of course, offers high praise, as the Astros slugger has been named to three All-Star teams, won the Rookie of the Year award and received MVP votes in three seasons since debuting in 2019. Starter Walker Buehler said Anthony reminds him of Dodgers slugger Max Muncy because of his big body and plate discipline. The right-hander also referenced two other former Dodgers stars in discussing Anthony. 'I think he's going to be one of the best players in the big leagues very, very soon,' Buehler said. 'Personally, I think his brain and obviously the physical stuff everyone can see. But who he is as a person, I think is pretty special. I've been around some really good ones. I've been around Corey (Seager) and Cody (Bellinger) and seen how those guys progressed through the first couple years of their career. He's definitely cut from that cloth.' Anthony arrived in the majors with sky-high expectations when he debuted against the Rays on June 9. He started 5-for-44 (.114) with a .518 OPS in his first 15 games, but the Red Sox were just waiting for the rookie's stat line to catch up with his strong approach and hard-hit rate. It has — in a big way. In 32 games since June 18, Anthony has the fourth-best on-base percentage (.433) in baseball. He's hitting .309 with 12 doubles, a triple (Sunday's) and an .897 OPS in that span despite hitting only one homer. BETTING: Red Sox -1.5 runline is listed at +158 on FanDuel for Monday's series opener versus Minnesota. If you're new to betting and want to learn more about how to bet on sports, check out our Massachusetts sports betting guide. 'I just don't think we've seen him super comfortable in terms of getting the A-swing off a ton,' said Buehler. 'Swing percentage is super, super low and he walks and does all these underlying things. Once it's time and he starts getting his big swing off on pitches he knows is coming, I think special things are gonna happen.' Beyond keying Sunday's rally, Sunday represented an eventful afternoon for Anthony. For the first time in the majors, he led off, trading places in the lineup with Jarren Duran, who hit third. In his first at-bat, he was hit in the foot by a Dustin May pitch, then scored on a Trevor Story sacrifice fly. That pain lingered all day, necessitating a visit from Alex Cora and a trainer after the triple. 'He grinded through it,' said Cora. 'He's learned the last nine games. Being sick in Chicago and you have to post. Today, he got hit right away. It was tight but he grinded through it. That's what big leaguers do.' Anthony's big weekend comes just days after perhaps his worst 48-hour stretch as a big leaguer. Facing star pitchers Zack Wheeler and Cristopher Sánchez, he became the first Red Sox player ever to strike out four times in back-to-back games. He was out of the lineup Wednesday after a stretch in which he went 3-for-16 with 11 strikeouts in a four-game span. 'It was just moreso that I didn't do a good job of adjusting in Philly,' Anthony said Sunday. I't was simple. I was obviously working on a few things and grinding out a few things with Breg and the guys in the cage. At the same time, things like that can't happen. I say they can't happen, but they will happen. 'Knowing the type of hitter I am, type of player I am, I'd match myself up with anyone on any given day. So we'll give that to those guys and move on.' Anthony entered as a pinch-hitter in Wednesday's wacky game and doubled in the 11th inning. That swing — his first of three extra-base hits in his next four games — helped turn things around. 'From there, I was like, 'Hey, screw it.' These last two days were a learning lesson. Those are the kind of arms you see in the playoffs. Those are the kind of arms you see from the best team. Understanding that, taking that with me and kind of just putting it in my back pocket and moving on was huge.' Though Anthony's swing mechanics were a bit off, his teammates and coaches never worried. Cora scoffed at a question about Anthony needing to make adjustments late Tuesday. 'He's going to go through stretches,' the manager said after Sunday's win. 'He faced Wheeler and Sánchez back-to-back days. They're really good at what they do. He didn't get exposed. He just got beat. There's a difference between getting beat in the big leagues and getting exposed.' Cora, like Anthony's teammates, has repeatedly raved about Anthony's mature approach in everything he has done since being promoted. And Anthony is happy to take that praise, especially when a name like Alvarez is invoked. 'That's a cool comp,' said Anthony. '(Alvarez) is a good hitter, so I'll take it. I've actually talked with Alex a lot about Yordan and about some of the guys he's played with. Just learning so much from Alex and guys that he's been around. He's a winner and he knows how to game-plan.' Dodgers' perfect Steven Kwan trade proposal to Guardians
The post Dodgers' perfect Steven Kwan trade proposal to Guardians appeared first on ClutchPoints. What is the Los Angeles Dodgers' biggest need heading into the trade deadline? Starting pitching? No, ironically enough, Los Angeles has actually gotten their starting lineup more or less in place, with the highly anticipated return of Blake Snell only strengthening the unit. How about their closer? Well, that, too, may soon be getting better as well, with World Series hero Blake Treinen nearing his own return even as Kirby Yates continues to struggle and Tanner Scott heads to IL with a potentially season-ending injury. The team's relief staff could use some help, whether that be moving Dustin May to the bullpen or acquiring a solid set-up guy in a trade for a mid-level prospect from a team out of contention. No, while Los Angeles could use a little help pretty much everywhere, and may decide that an elite closer is the best use of their assets, they just went through a month where runs were incredibly hard to come by and could once again fall into an offensive slump at the worst time, even once Max Muncy returns to third base. Fortunately, the Dodgers have been linked to a player who can do a little bit of everything on both offense and defense, even if he will cost quite a bit to acquire. Still, considering his age and abilities, the Dodgers might be wise to go all-in on Steven Kwan anyway, as he could be a core piece of LA's puzzle for the foreseeable future. Steven Kwan fits the Dodgers' needs in the outfield Standing 5-foot-8, 170 pounds, Steven Kwan doesn't look like an elite MLB player. A native of Los Gatos, California, Kwan played his college ball at Oregon State before being selected by the Cleveland Guardians in the fifth round of the 2018 MLB Draft. Though he only made his MLB debut in 2022, making his debut against the Kansas City Royals on April 7, Kwan finished third in Rookie of the Year voting while earning his first of three Golden Glove awards. Even as a rookie, Kwan was an RBI specialist, recording 52 runs batted in vs. just six home runs to go with 19 stolen bases and 62 walks. While those numbers have gone down over the past few years, Kwan's power has continued to grow, with the then-26-year-old hitting a career-high 14 home runs in 2024 on the way to his first of two consecutive All-Star appearances. Now in the middle of his fourth professional season, Kwan is having another All-Star season worthy of Gold Glove consideration. He's an elite leadoff hitter with a knack for getting on base, something the Dodgers really don't have in their first six hitters, and could help players like Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, and Will Smith earn a few more opportunities to hit with batters on base, something the team lacks with their power-heavy top of the rotation. The problem? Kwan won't come cheap, and may require LA saying goodbye to a few players with upside in exchange for a win-now player. Steven Kwan could cost Dalton Rushing and then some Dalton Rushing is a man without a long-term position on the Dodgers. A catcher by trade who was considered as a potential left field option but never really took meaningful reps at the position, at least at the MLB level, Rushing finds himself stuck behind arguably the best player at his position in the business in Will Smith, who, at 30, could play the position at a very high level for a very long time. Now, on at least 20 other teams, that wouldn't be a huge deal, as Rushing could catch in games where Smith is moved to the DH spot, but in Los Angeles, Shohei Ohtani has that spot on lock for the next eight years, which leaves his playing time really hard to come by for the rookie. On the Guardians, Rushing could platoon with Bo Naylor right away before transitioning to a full-time starting role in the future, when he will still only be 25 on opening day. Alternatively, he could also be in the running for a long-term spot at first base, which the Dodgers also have locked up long-term thanks to Freddie Freeman. In addition to Rushing, the Dodgers have a number of other players who could intrigue the Guardians, who are more on their timeline, from May and Ben Casparius on the mound, to minor leaguers like Zyhir Hope. Would it be hard to say goodbye to Rushing, May, and an additional asset for Kwan? Sure, but he is under contract for two more years at a very team-friendly number, can grow with the team, and fits both a short and long-term need for the Dodgers in the field and at the plate. If LA can pair him with a solid middle reliever from a team looking to offload players on expiring contracts, then the risk of losing future talent for a 27-year-old gold glover might just be worth the help it provides to the defending World Series Champions.
