East Khasi Hills prohibits release of sewage into rivers in Shillong

Time of India16-05-2025

Shillong: The East Khasi Hills district administration has prohibited the release of sewage and other wastes into rivers flowing through and around the hill city with immediate effect to check further pollution of these once-pristine water bodies.
In an order issued on May 13, district magistrate RM Kurbah said it has been brought to her notice that according to the latest analysis report conducted by the
Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board
on Umkhrah and Umshyrpi rivers, it was revealed that there is no significant improvement in water quality, particularly at Umshyrpi near Law College, Umshyrpi at Umshyrpi Bridge, Umkhrah river at Demthring, Umkhrah at Umkaliar, Umkhrah near slaughter house (Mawlai Phudmuri) and Umkhrah at Mawpdang Mawlai.
Kurbah said due to increase in parameters like biological oxygen demand & fecal coliform, unauthorised discharge of domestic sewage from septic tanks into the water bodies and throwing or dumping of garbage on street or into water bodies have been polluting the rivers.
So, in exercise of the power conferred upon her under Section 163 BNSS, the DM has prohibited the unauthorised discharge of untreated sewage or other wastes from septic tanks, houses, automobile workshops, commercial establishments, etc. and throwing of garbage on street or water bodies at the above mentioned places. "Any violation to this order shall invite prosecution under Section 223 of the BNS and legal action as per the relevant Sections of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, I981," the DM said.

33 illegal pigeon racing events, kabutarbaazi stopped across Punjab, Haryana & Chandigarh

Mohali: In a major crackdown on illegal animal sport, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India has successfully intervened to halt 33 unlawful pigeon racing or 'kabutarbaazi' events across 20 districts in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh over the past two months. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Three such events were stopped in Mohali villages, one in Raipur Khurd (Chandigarh), and 28 across Punjab, including Fatehgarh Sahib, Ludhiana, and Sangrur, where the most recent raids were conducted this week. The operations were carried out in coordination with senior police officials in all three jurisdictions. PETA India had filed complaints citing the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, both of which prohibit activities that inflict unnecessary suffering on animals. They also referenced a 2020 advisory from the Animal Welfare Board of India that declared such races illegal, equating them to animal fights under the law. "Pigeons feel pain and fear just like humans. Using them in races is not only cruel but also unlawful," said Meet Ashar, PETA India's Legal Advisor and Director of Cruelty Response. He praised Punjab ADGP (Traffic) Amardeep Singh Rai and the Chandigarh and Haryana Police for their prompt action and urged continued vigilance to prevent further such events. PETA also highlighted the harsh conditions the birds endure — often caged in filthy spaces, force-fed drugs like opium, and made to fly until exhaustion. Betting, a criminal offence under the Public Gambling Act of 1867, is often associated with these races. PETA has urged citizens to report any upcoming pigeon races or similar events to local authorities and support enforcement efforts by providing evidence such as videos, posters, or social media links.

Four arrested with 26 stolen two-wheelers in Noida

Noida: Four people, suspected to be part of a vehicle-lifters' gang, were nabbed Friday, with police seizing more than two dozen stolen two-wheelers, an auto used in the robberies and four knives. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The accused — including Kundan alias Kuber (30), Rahul (29), Amit (37) and Sankalp Kumar Sharma alias Golu alias Bachkandu (37) — are residents of Delhi's New Ashok Nagar. Of the 26 two-wheelers, 16 were connected to different cases registered in Noida and Delhi. Deputy commissioner of police Yamuna Prasad said, "Kundan is the kingpin of the gang, which first conducts a recce of the target area in autos, then breaks locks of the motorcycles and scooters parked near companies, factories and parks and drives them away," he said. "Motorcycles and scooters which cannot be started are taken away in autos. The gang then hides the stolen vehicles in safe places and later, when they get a chance, sells them at cheap rates. They divide the money," the DCP said. All four gang members have a long criminal history and were previously implicated in cases under BNS and IPC, as well as under NDPS Act and Arms Act in Noida and Delhi.

Former employee fires shots, loots mobiles at Puna embroidery unit

Surat: A former employee of an embroidery unit in the Puna area allegedly fired gunshots, vandalised the premises and looted cash and mobile phones on Thursday afternoon while the unit owner was away in Rajasthan. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The accused, identified as Dilipsinh alias Deepak, is currently absconding. According to the complaint lodged by Madansinh Bhati, the incident came to light after he received a call from his brother Ramsinh, the unit owner, who had been informed by one of the employees about the incident. When Bhati reached the embroidery unit, he found three employees — Mohammad Sameer Ansari, Devendra Bharti, and Rakesh Sahani — present and visibly shaken. The employees informed Bhati that Dilipsinh arrived at the unit along with an aide, locked the entrance, and asked them to sit on the floor. He then fired three rounds at the office windows and broke the CCTV cameras. Following the act of vandalism, he began abusing and threatening the employees, questioning why they continued to work at the unit despite his warnings to quit. The accused reportedly slapped all three employees before looting two mobile phones and cash from them. Before leaving the premises, he threatened to kill them if they continued working at the unit, locked them inside, and fled the scene. Puna police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act. "We have identified the accused from CCTV footage and formed three teams to trace and apprehend him," said Puna police inspector VM Desai.
