From Aston Villa & Preston to Everest base camp
FA Cup quarter-final: Preston North End v Aston VillaVenue: Deepdale, Preston Date: Sunday, 30 March Kick-off: 13:30 BSTCoverage: Watch on BBC One, iPlayer, plus BBC Sport website and app. Text commentary, goal clips and highlights on BBC Sport website and app. Listen live on BBC Radio 5 Live.
As two of his former clubs aim to scale new heights in the FA Cup this weekend, Simon Grayson is getting ready to conquer his fears 4,500 miles away in Nepal."The scariest thing they've mentioned is going to Everest base camp, which is a two-hour helicopter ride away," the former Preston North End manager and Aston Villa player tells BBC Sport from Kathmandu."I'm not one for seeking thrills or anything like that."Grayson is a four-time promotion-winning boss closing in on 800 games as a manager. His latest challenge has taken the Yorkshireman to South Asia where he is in charge of Lalitpur City for the 2025 Nepal Super League season, which starts on Saturday. The following day Preston battle with Villa for a place at Wembley in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.In 2015, Grayson steered Preston from League One to the Championship, where they have remained. Before his managerial career he played for Aston Villa alongside the likes of Dwight Yorke, Stan Collymore and Gareth Southgate between 1997-1999."My heart wants Preston to win but I also had two great years as a player at Villa as well," adds Grayson.
'I'm in Nepal for a life experience'
Grayson has not managed in England since being sacked by League One Fleetwood in November 2021.The former Leeds United and Sunderland boss spent 18 months managing Bengaluru in the Indian Super League between June 2022 and December 2023 before landing his latest job.Grayson spoke to former England cricketer and fellow Yorkshireman Darren Gough before heading to Nepal's capital."Darren had been there to do some commentary and said Kathmandu, where I'm based, is a great place," adds Grayson."Hopefully I will come out of the experience a better person and a better coach. "I don't want to look back in years to come and have regrets about why I didn't try something. I'm here for a life experience."A trip to Everest base camp - used by climbers during their ascent and descent of the world's tallest mountain - will hopefully provide Grayson with at least one lasting memory. But the 55-year-old - who has 20 years of managerial experience including promotions with Leeds, Huddersfield Town, Blackpool and Preston - has made it clear he is in the spectacular Himalayan region to work. Despite the men's national football team being down in 175th place in Fifa's world rankings, football is popular in Nepal. The seven-team Nepal Super League - the country's first professional franchise-based football league - is about to start its third season, with Grayson's club Lalitpur City the defending champions.Crowds of up to 15,000 are expected to watch, starting with Saturday's derby between Grayson's side and Kathmandu Rayzrs.
Ripon-born Grayson's squad includes players from Martinique, Haiti, Bhutan and Senegal, while Jonathan Cantillana is a midfielder who plays for Palestine."They'll have to adapt to my Yorkshire accent," says Grayson, who has been bowled over by the charm and kindness of locals in Kathmandu - as well as the breathtaking Himalayan views, golden temples and charming hill villages.Three days after arriving in Nepal's capital, Grayson experienced Holi - the ancient Hindu festival of colours that celebrates spring, love, and new life which is traditionally celebrated by throwing bright coloured powder over family and friends.Nepal is home to eight of the world's 14 highest mountains - including Everest - but, while Grayson is hoping to hit new heights with Lalitpur, he is happy to give the thrill-seeking a miss."I travelled in a cable car to meet the owners of my new club in a hotel in the mountains," he adds."I wasn't looking forward to getting in a cable car and I didn't particularly enjoy it."
A first trophy for Villa since 1996?
The Nepal Super League season lasts just four weeks, with the play-off final to decide the champions on 26 April - FA Cup semi-final weekend. Will it be Preston, 14th in the Championship table, or Aston Villa - who face Paris St-Germain in a mouth-watering Champions League quarter-final next month - at Wembley on the final weekend of April?"I loved my time at Preston," adds Grayson, who was in charge at Deepdale between 2013 and 2017. "I had nothing but good times there and won promotion in front of around 50,000 fans at Wembley by beating Swindon 4-0 in the play-off final."I had no aspirations to leave but then Sunderland came knocking and it felt like one of those clubs you could help get back into the Premier League."Grayson knows Villa fans are desperate for success. He joined them from Leicester City in June 1997, 15 months after Villa won the League Cup by beating Leeds in the 1996 final.Villa have not won a major trophy since but Grayson believes that could be about to change under Unai Emery."I have been so impressed with what he has done," he adds."No disrespect to Preston, but winning the FA Cup could be a big opportunity for Villa this season."Villa are a huge club and they will look at this game as an opportunity towards getting to the final and winning silverware."I'm intrigued as to how this tie is going to go."Will Grayson be watching the action at Deepdale on television in Nepal?"I'm still getting used to the time difference over here. We're five hours and 45 minutes ahead. But the early kick-off means I can watch it. "Had it been later I'd have missed it - we've got training the next morning!".

Next Middlesbrough Odds & Betting: Gerrard Top Candidate For Riverside Job
Middlesbrough could be swapping one ex-England international for another in the dugout if the next Middlesbrough manager odds are anything to go with Steven Gerrard now the favourite to replace Michael Carrick. Carrick was sacked nearly five weeks after Boro finished 10th in the Championship, four points off the play-off positions, confirming the Teessiders to a ninth successive season in the second tier. Carrick guided Boro to the play-offs in his first season but has missed out in the last two seasons and after finishing with fewer points than the previous campaign, coupled with having to watch their local rivals, Sunderland, get promoted, the decision was made to remove the ex-Manchester United and Tottenham midfielder. Assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick have also left the club, so it is a chance for a clean sweep at the Riverside. Next Middlesbrough Manager Odds Another England star set for the Riverside Steve Cooper was the initial favourite installed by betting sites, and was quickly followed by former Luton boss Rob Edwards but now former England and Liverpool star Steven Gerrard is favourite at odds of just 11/8. Gerrard has been out of work since leaving Saudi side Al-Ettifaq in January, after 18 months in charge. He previously managed Aston Villa and Rangers, where he led the Scottish side Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years in 2020-21. It is understood that interviews for the vacant role are taking place this week, and whether Gerrard is among those on the shortlist remains to be seen. He admitted in April that he was enjoying taking some time out but will the lure of the Riverside prove too strong? He might not have any experience of the Championship, but second favourite Edwards certainly does, and he has been out of work since the Hatters sacked him in January. The side were just two points above the Championship relegation zone, but that shouldn't overshadow the amazing job he did in taking them up to the Premier League. He guided the side to a play-off final win over Coventry City in May 2023 to see them back in the top-flight for the first time in 30 years, and Middlesbrough would be love to be celebrating that this time next year. Edwards is 5/2 to be the next Middlesbrough manager, but if they do want him then they may face competition with Bristol City also reportedly interested. Edwards has also been installed as the even-money favourite to be the Robins boss. Cooper is next on the list in the next Middlesbrough manager betting market and reports in the north-east suggest he's been shortlisted for an interview. He is another manager who has achieved promotion from the Championship, taking Nottingham Forest up in May 2022. He has been out of work since leaving Leicester in November, but he has admitted he is ready to return to management, albeit with a preference to work abroad. Some betting sites have cut Sean Dyche's odds to 5/1, but there's been no mention of the ex-Everton boss being in the frame in local reporting, despite the success he enjoyed at this level as Burnley manager. Another name linked is Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, who was the favourite for the Southampton job before Will Still was named manager last month. He guided Wednesday to 12th in the league last season and with everything currently going on at the club, who have been charged with multiple breaches of EFL regulations relating to unpaid wages, he might be looking for an escape route. Rohl is also on the shortlist to be the next Leicester City boss, according to reports, and is as short as 1/2 for that position on certain betting apps. Boro Could Consider Challinor Of those contenders with double-figure prices, talk of a move for 25/1 shot Robbie Keane has been dismissed, but there's a possibility the Tessiders talk to ex-Boro midfielder Gary O'Neil, who is out of work after leaving Wolves last season and is a 12/1 chance. A new name on the list is Stockport manager Dave Challinor, who has done an outstanding job with the League One side, taking them from the National League up to League One in three seasons. The Hatters reached the League One play-offs last season before they were beaten in the semi-finals by Leyton Orient. He has also achieved promotion from the National League North with Fylde and promotion back to the EFL with Hartlepool United so he has had success wherever he has been. Football betting sites are offering 25/1 on him to make the move to the Riverside Stadium but it is nice to see the former Tranmere Rovers and Stockport defender finally getting some recognition. Man City chasing three deals before deadline including forgotten Chelsea player
Manchester City are pushing to get transfers done before the deadline on Tuesday evening because Pep Guardiola wants new signings to feature at the Club World Cup Manchester City are wasting no time in getting deals done in the transfer window and could wrap up three before the first summer deadline. The first window of the Club World Cup-altered schedule for this year closes at 7pm BST on Tuesday evening and City are racing to get transfers completed. Pep Guardiola 's side have already got one deal done, having announced the signing of Wolves defender Rayan Ait-Nouri on Monday for £36million. The 23-year-old Algerian left-back has signed a five-year deal with City and will be able to play in the Club World Cup, which starts on Saturday. City are now racing to conclude three other deals ahead of their first match at the inaugural summer tournament, against Wydad AC in Philadelphia next Wednesday. Guardiola is plotting a major overhaul of his squad after signing a two-year contract extension earlier this year and the club are matching his ambitions. City are hopeful of wrapping up deals for Lyon star Rayan Cherki and AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders and Chelsea goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli before the close of play on Tuesday. Guardiola wants Cherki available to feature in the United States next week and has pushed for the £34m transfer to get done. Cherki enjoyed an eye-catching 2024/25 campaign for Lyon, grabbing 12 goals and 20 assists in 44 appearances, and has been promoted to the France senior side. He made his debut as a substitute on Thursday, scoring in the 5-4 Nations League defeat to Spain and is now hoping to get his transfer signed off. The 21-year-old attacker will be joined at the Etihad Stadium next season by Netherlands international Reijnders. HAVE YOUR SAY! What do you make of Manchester City's transfer business? Comment below. City have already agreed a £45m transfer fee with Milan for Reijnders, who will put pen to paper on a five-year deal worth £200,000 per week. The 26-year-old was the star player for Milan during a poor campaign and is leaving Serie A two years after joining the club from AZ Alkmaar in his home country. Meanwhile, Bettinelli is being signed as a replacement for veteran goalkeeper Scott Carson, who has left City after six years with the club. The 39-year-old only played twice for Guardiola's side but was a much-loved member of the squad. Bettinelli, 33, has been with Chelsea since 2021 but will swap sides a year before the end of his Blues contract. He has performed a similar role to Carson's, having played just once at Chelsea – a 5-1 FA Cup third-round win over National League side Chesterfield in January 2022. He will become the new third-choice keeper, behind long-term first-choice Ederson and backup Stefan Ortega. Chelsea, meanwhile, are in talks with Milan over the proposed signing of goalkeeper Mike Maignan, although negotiations have stalled over a transfer fee.

But emergency services raced to his home at Perols, near Montpellier, on Monday after concerns were raised for his welfare. Toulouse-born Congre was reportedly found unconscious with a severe stab wound close to his heart. Montpellier police have opened an enquiry into the incident, which took place near the city's airport. Congre joined Montpellier straight after their surprise Ligue 1 title win in 2012, and went on to captain the side. Aston Villa considered signing him in January 2016, while he had attracted interest from Crystal Palace and West Brom the previous spring. Able to operate in central defence or on either flank, he won seven Under-21 caps for France. Congre, whose parents hail from the French Caribbean, later received a senior call-up from Guadeloupe. Despite this, he failed to make their squad for the 2009 Concacaf Gold Cup. A source close to the now-retired player said on Tuesday morning that his condition had become more stable. But enquiries continue into whether Congre's injuries were self-inflicted or a third party was involved.
