15 foreign universities to open campuses in India this academic year
NEW DELHI: Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday said that 15 foreign universities will be opening their branches in India by this academic year, particularly in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics streams.
The University of Liverpool, on Monday, formally accorded permission to open its campus in Bengaluru.
A ceremony to hand over the Letter of Intent (LoI) to the University officials was held at New Delhi, which was presided over by Pradhan. This will be the second foreign university to be issued LoI under the UGC (Setting Up and Operation of Campuses of Foreign Higher Educational Institutions in India) Regulations, 2023, a release from PIB said.
Pradhan said, 'The University of Liverpool is the fourth foreign university to publicly announce its presence in India. By this academic year, 15 foreign universities will be coming to India, especially in STEMB.'
The university was found in 1881 and is a member of the prestigious Russel Group.
The University of Southampton was the first foreign university to receive a LoI from the UGC in 2023 and could open its campus later this year.
The Minister said, 'To make the country a VIKSIT Bharat by 2047, the implementation of NEP 2020 in letter and spirit is the key to actualise this ambition. One of the primary recommendations of NEP 2020 is rooted, futuristic and global education and the aim is to produce global citizens.'

Starlink set to get licence to start satcom services
NEW DELHI: 's Starlink is all set to get a go-ahead to start satellite services in India, with the govt clearing its application for a Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) licence, weeks after issuing a letter of intent (LoI) to the company. "Starlink's officials are expected in the national capital over the coming days to sign the papers for the GMPCS licence. The company is in sync with the new licence conditions and various guidelines that are required to begin services in the country," sources aware of the development told TOI. The issuance of the licence will clear one of the biggest hurdles for the company, especially as this also involves receiving approvals on security aspects by the ministry of home affairs. The govt carried out a detailed vetting of Musk's satellite company and also stipulated stiff security requirements, including the need to establish methods of interception as well as having a command and control centre in the country. Sources said that after GMPCS licence, Starlink will need approval from IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre), which will issue authorisation for its satellites to operate on Indian territory. "The application at IN-SPACe is also at its final leg and should get approval at the inter-ministerial standing committee, which is expected to happen very soon," another source said. DoT issued a Letter of Intent (LoI) to Starlink on May 7, which paved the way for the issuance of the GMPCS licence. MMRDA allots BKC plots to Sumitomo, Brookfield for Rs 3,840 crore
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) allotted plots in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to entities related to Japan's Sumitomo Corporation and the US-based Brookfield for Rs 3,840.49 crore via competitive bidding. The government agency handed over allotment letters for plots C-13, C-19 and C-80 to the concerned entities in the presence of the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, on Tuesday, 3 June. Goisu Realty, a group company of Sumitomo Realty & Development, has been allotted plot C-13 and C-19 for Rs 1,360.48 crore (39.61 per cent above the base price) and Rs 1,177.86 crore (40.20 per cent above the base price), respectively. The lease for plot C-80 has been awarded to Schloss Bangalore, the operator of a luxury hotels and resorts chain under the 'The Leela' brand name, for Rs 1,302.16 crore (12.34 per cent above the base price). Meanwhile, Goisu already has two office projects in BKC, with one of them scheduled for completion after 2026. The developments follow the Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed by MMRDA at the World Economic Forum 2025, Davos (Switzerland), where investments of USD 12 billion were committed by Brookfield and USD 5 billion by Sumitomo for infrastructure development in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The total built-up area of all three plots is 86,321.80 square metres. MMRDA is expecting 15,000 high-tech jobs to be created through the developments on the plots. Recently, Sumitomo entered into an office building development project in BKC through a three-way partnership with Hines, a US-based global real estate investment manager and developer, Japan's Mitsubishi Estate Company, and Mumbai-based real estate developer Kanakia Group. The project's gross development value (GDV) is estimated to be around USD 1 billion, according to a source familiar with the matter. The consortium will develop a premium office project in Mumbai's BKC, India's costliest office hub, with an investment of Rs 3,000 crore.
