Celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, known for working with actors like Kareena Kapoor, spoke to Hindustan Times on June 1, sharing valuable health and fitness insights. As Covid-19 cases rise again across India, Rujuta offered practical nutrition and health advice to help boost immunity and stay safe during this surge. Sharing her nutrition advice, Rujuta said, 'One of the easiest ways to cut down on excess oil consumption is simply to eat at home. When we eat home-cooked food, we invariably eat a balanced meal.'
She added that while Covid-19 is an infectious disease, complications often worsen when underlying metabolic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure are present. Managing overall health, she says, is crucial regardless of a pandemic. "Looking after your health is of paramount importance, whether there is Covid-19 or no Covid-19," Rujuta said.
When it comes to precautionary measures during the current surge, she suggests not forgetting the basics like washing hands regularly, wearing a mask when necessary, and eating more freshly prepared food at home. She also cautioned against over-exercising, pointing out that excessive workouts can temporarily lower immunity.
"There is a thing called dysfunctional exercise where people just exercise for the sake of it. They don't care whether it's actually making them fitter, stronger, healthier," she explained. Rujuta added that some individuals continue their rigorous routines even when they feel under the weather, often ending up in worse shape than when they began. The key, she insists, is to listen to your body and move within your limits.
She also reminded people that the goal of exercise should be to stay fit and healthy, and not merely lose weight or burn calories.

At the Government Model School in Austinpatti, few teachers have begun wearing masks on their own initiative, hoping students would mirror the small acts of responsibility. Elumalai Government Girls Higher Secondary School administration has been encouraging students to take bathe daily, wash their hands regularly, and maintain personal hygiene. Similarly, at Keelaiyur Government High School, the school administration has distributed soap oil, and students have been advised not to touch commonly used surfaces and to help keep classrooms and shared spaces clean. In addition to these efforts, Madura College Higher Secondary School has instructed its students to wear masks, and for those without one, the school distributes masks free of charge. The school administration said that the admission process was also conducted with masks in place. To further promote hygiene, three wash basins near the entrance have been reinstated for regular handwashing, they added. Private schools in Madurai district are equally careful. They have been guiding students to eat well, build immunity, and adopt healthy habits. 'Though there are no active COVID-19 cases in the district, as a general instruction by the Department of Public Health, schools can advise the children to wear masks, control overcrowding at closed spaces or on the premises and those unwell can be advised to take leave as a preventive measure,' a senior official from the Health Department of the Madurai Corporation said. Centre to hold nationwide Covid mock drill on June 5 for hospital checks

The Centre has planned to conduct facility-level mock drills to assess hospital preparedness on June 5, according to official sources in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This follows a series of technical review meetings chaired by Sunita Sharma, director general of health services (DGHS), earlier this week in view of the recent increase in Covid-19 cases in India. States have also been instructed to ensure the availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines. Sources added that a mock drill assessing oxygen supply systems such as PSA plants, LMO tanks, and MGPS lines was conducted on June 2, 2025. As of June 4, India reported 4,302 active Covid-19 cases, with an increase of 862 cases in the past 24 hours. Kerala topped the list with 1,373 cases, followed by Maharashtra and Gujarat with 510 and 461 cases, respectively. The country also recorded seven deaths on Tuesday, including four from Maharashtra and one each from Delhi, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu. Since January 1 this year, 44 deaths have been reported in India, primarily among individuals with pre-existing illnesses such as pneumonia, coronary diseases, and tuberculosis (TB). The review meeting was also attended by representatives of the Union Health Ministry's disaster management cell, emergency management response (EMR) cell, the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP). Central government hospitals in Delhi and representatives from all states and union territories (UTs) also participated in the meeting to evaluate the current Covid-19 situation and preparedness measures. State and district surveillance units under the IDSP are closely monitoring influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory illness (SARI), with testing recommended for all admitted SARI cases and 5 per cent of ILI cases, according to guidelines. 'Positive SARI samples are sent for whole genome sequencing through the ICMR VRDL network,' an official in the know said. He added that the ministry continues to closely monitor the situation and remains committed to ensuring public health safety through timely interventions and effective communication. 'The public is also advised to practise hand hygiene and cough etiquette, while individuals with acute respiratory illness should self-monitor and seek medical care if symptoms worsen,' he said.
