Boksburg toddler killed after being hit by waste removal truck
The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has extended its condolences to the family of a two-year-old boy who died in an accident involving a waste removal truck on Thursday.
The accident happened at the intersection of Lama and Poppy Streets in Villa Liza, Boksburg, at around 07:00 and also left an adult woman with minor injuries, Boksburg Advertiser reports.
Zweli Dlamini, spokesperson for the CoE, confirmed that the vehicle involved belonged to a service provider contracted by the city's waste management services department.
'During the unfortunate incident, a waste truck belonging to a service provider contracted by the city was involved in an accident where two pedestrians were struck. One individual, a two-year-old child, tragically passed away at the scene, while an adult was left with minor injuries,' Dlamini said.
He added, 'We are extremely saddened by this incident and our heartfelt sympathy goes to the family of the little boy. We also wish the injured person a speedy recovery.'
The city confirmed that waste collection services in the area are fully outsourced, and the contracted company has pledged to take full responsibility as required by the terms of their agreement with the municipality.
According to the contract, the CoE is indemnified against such incidents.
Sergeant Nkemeleng Mabula, spokesperson for the Dawn Park Police Station, confirmed that a case is under investigation.
'We were contacted about the incident. It is alleged that the victims were run over by the truck. The child, aged two, was declared deceased on the scene while the woman was taken to hospital for medical attention. The case is under investigation.'

Malbroer assault: TikTok fame, assault history raised in bail hearing
The two men charged in connection with the death of Brandon Pretorius (27) will remain behind bars until next week. According to Boksburg Advertiser, Pretorius – a father from Jansen Park – succumbed to his injuries on May 6, several days after an assault that reportedly stemmed from an incident at Malbroer Pub and Grill in North Rand Road. The accused, Ruan Beetge (30) and Gordon Westraad (45), continued their bail application at the Boksburg Magistrate's Court yesterday. During proceedings, the investigating officer, Sergeant Millicent Tshabalala, once again took the stand. Tshabalala testified that she had profiled the two accused and revealed that there were three assault cases against Beetge (accused one), although he had never been convicted. She stated that one of the cases involved the assault of a uniformed police officer, while another was related to domestic violence. In the matter involving the police officer, Tshabalala explained that the investigating officer never submitted the docket to court for a summons. The second case, she said, was withdrawn as a result of mediation. The third case was closed at the police station, with a reason provided. The officer also testified that Beetge gained more followers on TikTok following the assault, which led to him receiving money. According to her further testimony, the second accused, Westraad, has no prior convictions, and she stated both should not be granted bail. 'According to my observation, their lives are in danger. My duty is to protect them and the community. While they are in prison, they are not in danger. Outside, the community poses a danger to them,' she said. Beetge's advocate Marius van Wyngaard began his cross-examination of Tshabalala. Among other questions, he quizzed her about the post-mortem report and an accident Pretorius was involved in prior to being taken to hospital. The bail application will resume on Tuesday. Tsakane and Langaville sting ops lead to arrest of suspects with illegal guns Tsakani – The EMPD's Community Liaison Unit (CLU) arrested two men, aged 23 and 31, for possession of unlicensed firearms during operations in Tsakane and Langaville on May 21. According to CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, officers received information from the Crime Intelligence Unit about a person believed to have an unlicensed firearm. 'The individual was reportedly terrorising the community through a series of robberies in the area,' said Dlamini. 'In response, officers swiftly launched a sting operation to apprehend the man. They proceeded to an address on Khotavhushika Street, where they found someone matching the description provided. 'The officers explained the purpose of their visit and requested permission to do a search, which the suspect granted. 'They found identity documents and bank cards that the suspect could not explain and two unlicensed black firearms hidden beneath the mattress,' explained Dlamini. Dlamini said officers cornered a 23-year-old male in Langaville Ext 3. 'Upon arrival, officers explained the reason for their visit and asked to search the premises, which the uneasy suspect allowed. Officers found a silver unlicensed firearm in his trousers, and the man failed to provide satisfactory answers for having a weapon,' he added. Both suspects were detained at the Tsakane Police Station. The confiscated unlicensed guns with an estimated value of R1 650 were booked at the police station. The two face charges of possession of a dangerous weapon and will soon appear in the Tsakane Magistrate's Court.
