Next Stay Close ✕ In addition to the murder charge related to Mafole's death, Ntshalintshali is facing another murder charge from an unrelated case, which is scheduled to go to trial on 12 and 19 August 2025. This has led to the State's decision to oppose his bail application, citing concerns over the seriousness of the charges against him. Ntshalintshali remains in custody pending his next court appearance. Phindi Mjonondwane, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Gauteng, commented on the case, emphasising the ongoing nature of the investigation. 'We are focused on thoroughly investigating the circumstances surrounding Mr. Mafole's death and ensuring that justice is served,' Mjonondwane said. 'We are exploring all avenues in this case, and further arrests cannot be ruled out as we gather more evidence.'Mafole's death has left a significant impact on the local community and his colleagues at the City of Ekurhuleni. Known for his dedication to transparency and effective public sector auditing, Mafole's passing has raised concerns about the safety of government employees, particularly in light of the violent nature of the crime. His colleagues have expressed deep sadness and shock over the incident, remembering him as a committed professional whose work had a profound impact on the city's operations. The tragic killing of Mafole has prompted calls for stronger measures to protect public servants, particularly those working in sensitive areas like financial oversight and auditing. Public servants who are involved in exposing corruption or fraud, like Mafole, can often find themselves at risk due to their roles. The murder has prompted public outcry and raised questions about the broader issue of public safety for officials in the government sector. As the investigation into Mafole's death continues, the NPA has assured the public that every effort is being made to bring the perpetrator(s) to justice. The NPA has urged people with information about the case to come forward, assuring them that their information will be treated with the utmost confidentiality. Ntshalintshali's appearance today marks a critical step in the legal process, but the case is still in its early stages with a second trial pending in August.

Shocking twist: Man arrested for killing auditor Mpho Mafole was on bail for another case
The slain City of Ekurhuleni's group divisional head of corporate and forensic audits, Mpho Mafole, 47, died in a hail of bullets, in what appeared to be an execution. Image: Facebook A 40-year-old man, Thabang Ntshalintshali, was remanded in custody on Wednesday when he appeared before the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court in connection with the murder of Mpho Mafole, the group divisional head for corporate and forensic audits at the City of Ekurhuleni. The packed court heard that Ntshalintshali committed the heinous crime while on bail for another murder case dating back to 2023. "Your case is postponed until the 15th of August. It is a provisional date. The accused is in custody, no bail," the magistrate told Ntshalintshali. IOL previously reported that Mafole, 47, was found in a pool of blood after his vehicle was sprayed with bullets on the R23 in Kempton Park on June 30. At the time, sources insisted Mafole's death was a hit, linked to his investigation into a massive R2 billion electricity scandal he was close to uncovering. On Tuesday, Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the provincial serious and violent crime detectives had arrested a 40-year-old man. Video Player is loading. City urges residents to log detailed reports when reporting chemical odour
Following ongoing complaints from residents about a recurring chemical odour in parts of Alberton, the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has responded by confirming its awareness of the issue and its intention to investigate further. Zweli Dlamini, CoE spokesperson, said: 'The city has taken note of the media enquiry from Alberton Record regarding ongoing concerns from residents about a persistent chemical odour in parts of Alberton over the past two years. We acknowledge and appreciate the community's vigilance in reporting environmental concerns that may affect public health and well-being.' Dlamini explained, chemical odours can come from various sources, such as manufacturing or processing industries, sewer system spillages, industrial or household effluents entering wetlands or water bodies, and improper storage or disposal of chemicals. 'Because of the undefined nature of the reported odour and the broad range of possible sources, it is difficult to conclusively identify the origin of the smell without more specific information,' Dlamini added. The city is urging residents to assist by logging complaints with as much detail as possible. Complaints should include: • A description of the odour (sulfur-like, sweet, burning plastic) • The exact date, time, and location of detection • How long the smell lasts and how frequently it occurs • Weather conditions at the time (hot, windy, rainy) • Any visible or unusual activity (spills, smoke, drainage) Complaints can be logged through the city's call centre at 08 605 43000 or the MyEkurhuleni app, where each report receives a unique reference number and is directed to the relevant departments for follow-up and inspection. 'We also encourage industries operating in the area to ensure full compliance with environmental regulations and implement appropriate odour management systems,' said Dlamini. 'The city takes all environmental complaints seriously and remains committed to protecting the health of our residents.' To support transparency and ensure proper tracking, residents are asked to forward their complaint reference numbers to the Alberton Record at [email protected] after logging a report with the city. The Alberton Record will monitor developments and engage with city officials to track investigation outcomes and patterns related to the ongoing odour complaints.
