Mpho Mafole's murder: 40-year-old suspect in court for killing Ekurhuleni auditor

A 40-year-old man is scheduled to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court in connection with the murder of Mpho Mafole, the group divisional head for corporate and forensic audits at the City of Ekurhuleni.
IOL previously reported that Mafole, 47, was found in a pool of blood after his vehicle was sprayed with bullets on the R23 in Kempton Park on June 30.
At the time, sources insisted Mafole's death was a hit, linked to his investigation into a massive R2 billion electricity scandal he was close to uncovering.
On Tuesday, Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the provincial serious and violent crime detectives had arrested a 40-year-old man.
'On (Sunday) 20 July 2025, the team arrested a 40-year-old man who is expected to appear before Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on 23 July 2025,' she said.
Detectives are also looking for a second suspect, identified as Hlanganani Agripper Mncwango, after a warrant of arrest was issued for him by the court.

Earlier this month, IOL reported that Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza described the brutally murdered Mafole as a dedicated public servant, a fearless champion for accountability, and a staunch advocate for ethical governance.
Police in Gauteng are investigating the motive behind the murder, but activists and social media users suggest the cold-blooded murder could have been an assassination meant to silence him, linked to his work for the City of Ekurhuleni.

Third burned female body found in east, police investigate

The decision was welcomed by City of Joburg Speaker, Margaret Arnolds, and other activists who have been camping outside the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court. Meek is accused of murdering her son, 11-year-old Jayden-Lee Meek, in May. He was found near a staircase in their residential complex, the morning after she reported him missing. The State, which opposed bail, had argued that there had been inconsistencies in the 31-year-old mother's statements. " The applicant failed to satisfy this court that she discharged the onus to prove on a balance of probabilities that the interest of justice permits the release from detention in terms of Section 60 (B) of the Act; therefore, bail is accordingly refused for the applicant," ruled Magistrate Annelin Africa. "We welcome the court's decision to deny bail in this deeply painful and emotionally charged matter. This is the case that has shaken our communities and pierced the conscience of our City. The Speaker reflected that while there is a need to uphold judicial independence, the public outcry has been instrumental in lending its voice in support of victims of abuse. Jayden-Lee's body was found on May 14 on the staircase of their flat at the Swazi's Place complex in Fleurhof, southwest Johannesburg, after the Grade 6 learner was reported missing the day before. On Monday, Naidoo argued that her client is innocent, and everybody wants justice for Jayden-Lee, while the State Prosecutor argued that Meek does have a reliable address, which will complicate matters as she intends to relocate to a different province, should she be granted bail.

Trial of Lusikisiki massacre accused postponed for new evidence review

Image: Picture: Supplied/ NPA The highly anticipated trial of six men accused of mass murder in Ngobozana Village, Lusikisiki, faced a delay on Tuesday when the state unexpectedly provided previously undisclosed evidence to the defence just hours before court proceedings were set to begin. The trial stems from the horrific events of September 28, 2024, when 18 people were brutally gunned down at two neighbouring homesteads in Ngobozana Village, near the rural town of Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape. The newly submitted material includes three witness statements and a SAP13 exhibit register, documents which were not part of the original docket. Prosecutors told the court that the evidence only came to light following recent consultations with state witnesses. During court proceedings, defence counsel raised concern about receiving fresh evidence so late, saying it required full re-consultation with the accused. "It seems there are cases developing day by day, we need time to consider the advice given to clients and determine our next direction." The court agreed that it would not be fair for the defence to face witness testimony without proper preparation. The judge ruled that the trial would stand down until tomorrow morning, giving all legal teams time to review the new material and take further instructions. In another development, it was confirmed that Accused No. 2, one of the six men on trial, is refusing to sign admissions under Section 220 of the Criminal Procedure Act. His legal representative informed the court that, despite being advised on the legal implications, the accused did not wish to admit to any facts. He was instructed to use the rest of the day to review the new documents, including the SAP13 register. The judge explained the register's importance as it contains records of crime scene evidence booked into police custody.
