Kolhapur: It has been a year since a major fire tragedy reduced the Keshavrao Bhosale Natyagruha and Rajarshi Shahu Kusti Maidan to ashes.
However, although restoration work soon began and is still under way, heavy rain and technical difficulties have presented limitations and the reopening of the theatre will take a few more months.
Soon after the fire, Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC), state govt, public representatives, and theatre lovers became resolute to rebuild the theatre as its orginal form within a year. State govt released Rs25 crore for the reconstruction. The theatre's design was finalised collectively by govt, municipal bodies, heritage committees, artists and public representatives.
KMC city engineer Ramesh Maskar said: "It has been only 10 months since the work on the theatre began.
In the first phase strengthening of walls, laying tiles, waterproofing and roofing was completed. 40% of the work was done the second phase, including backstage, footing, art gallery makeup room, green room and brickwork construction, including columns, has been completed. In its phase three, a work order has been issued.
"
To break down the work done so far, in phase one a tender worth Rs7.35 crore was published on Oct 3, 2024.

The tender of the lowest bidder, Lakshmi Hericon Pvt. Ltd, Mumbai, was approved, and a work order was given to them on Oct 14, 2024. In phase two, administrative approval was given on Feb 6, 2025, for the proposal of Rs3.2 crore for the green room and necessary works.
In phase three, the proposal of Rs11.77 crore for interior, acoustics, electrification, and ancillary work was approved by the district collector on April 8, 2025.
"The theatre uses cutting-edge technology and systems. Therefore, only those who have experience in maintaining and handling technology should handle them. After the work is completed, the maintenance and repair work will be done by a private organisation," said Maskar.
On the night of Aug 8, 2024, the KMC-run theatre complex was gutted in the fire. Since then, the day is considered as a black day in the history of theatre in Kolhapur.
The Natyagruha was built in 1915 by Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj and is named after legendary theatre artist Sangeet Surya Keshavrao Bhosale. Incidentally, the night of the fire marked the eve of Bhosale's 134th birth anniversary.
Production manager Milind Ashtekar said: "I have spent my life on the theatre premises. I have seen the renovation of Natyagruha three times, and I also had the misfortune of seeing it getting gutted last year. Although this wound will never heal, I am satisfied that the heritage Natyagruha is being restored to its original form once again."
The approved grant so far is Rs 25.1 crore, of which Rs22.3 crore has been planned, and the remaining Rs2.8 crore has been proposed for the reconstruction of the embankment of Rajarshi Shahu Khasbag Maidan.

Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid Teases a Secret-Reveal at Travis Kelce's Rumored Nuptial
Andy Reid on Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift's marriage: Image via X Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are taking their storybook romance to the next step. No, they didn't announce it loud, but fans know how to read the nerves. It's not anything new, though. The lovebirds have achieved many milestones in their respective careers, but that doesn't stop fans from focusing on their chemistry, bypassing worldly success. Yes, that's how captivating they are on and off the screen. Given they have now decided to settle down, apparently, it seems the industry mutual friends are eager to give away many secrets. Count Chiefs coach Andy Reid on the list. Andy Reid might turn out to be a talebearer at Travis Kelce's much-awaited wedding The love story that started from just a silly attempt by a 34-year-old NFL star to give his number via a friendship band to the Grammy-winning singer has successfully survived a couple of years through thick and thin. Yes, fans have peeped into their lives a lot, even uninvited, unwanted sometimes, but there are a heap of stories that they couldn't get access to. But now, it's time to unveil more. The red-hot couple individually shares a deep bond with Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid. Andy has known Taylor even before her connection to Travis went public. The current Chiefs were with the Philadelphia Eagles (from 1999 to 2012), the same city where Swift belongs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Resmed AirSense 11 with flat 20% off ResMed Buy Now Undo The 67-year-old is just as excited to grace their wedding function and spill some beans, but come on, not all! 'There are a few [stories] I can't tell,' he said during an appearance on Kansas City–centric 'Fescoe & Dusty' podcast. ' There are a lot of great stories. He's done so many good things. All the things he does off the field, people don't know about, helping people out. He's got a big heart that way, and I appreciate that the most .' No, Reid is not just on the groom's side. As he told he's quite well familiar with Taylor's growing-up years and her entire family, he's just as overwhelmed explaining why Taylor deserves all of it. Andy Reid has big words for Taylor Swift's graceful handling of fame 'She became this famous person and arguably the most famous woman in the world since probably the queen passed away,' Reid said. 'But she sure handles it the right way, and that's the part I appreciate the most.' It's not an exaggeration at all. The 34-year-old singer literally didn't let success ride on her head. She looks invested in her relationship with the NFL tight end like anything. From becoming a staple at every Chiefs' game to supporting her beau to being genuine while connecting to fans, encouraging them, and paying gratitude, Taylor set a standard beyond reality. Now, one of the most judged sides of their high-profile romance seems to be their careers. Both are doing excellent in the field and on the stage, respectively, but naysayers can still deem their love as a distraction. But Andy, the Chiefs' head coach, has his take. 'They just do it the right way, and they're not a distraction by any means. People always ask, 'Are they a distraction?' Absolutely not. There's no distraction because of how they handle it.' the coach gave his nod to their love the loudest. Now, the question is: do they really tie the knot anytime soon? Well, all signs point toward it. Especially, it looks like a deal after they were spotted house hunting at Cleveland this week. But don't take it as a wedding bell yet. The question is still up in the air.
