Golf in a hangar? DeChambeau's woes at the British Open get 'The Scientist' thinking

PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland (AP) — As a popular YouTuber and golfing enigma, Bryson DeChambeau is known for coming up with some wacky, radical ideas.
'The Scientist' might have another one in the pipeline.

'This is going to be wild,' DeChambeau proffered at the British Open on Tuesday, 'but imagine a scenario where you've got a 400-yard tent, and you can just hit any type of shot with any wind with all the fans.
'That's what I imagine, like in a hangar or something like that. A big stadium. That would be cool to test.'
Don't put it past DeChambeau to go through with it.
After all, he's open to anything if it means improving his patchy record at golf's oldest major championship.
The 31-year-old American has played seven times at the Open Championship, where handling the fickle weather can be the key to success. He missed the cut on three occasions and only finished inside the top 30 once.

It's a record that frustrates one of the sport's deeper thinkers. He remembers playing well at the Walker Cup at Royal Lytham St. Anne's — one of the courses on the British Open rotation — back in 2015, and was quick to point out he coped fine in windy conditions in LIV Golf events in Miami and Valderrama this year.
Place him in the British Open, though, and he can get blown away — like last year at Royal Troon, when he shot 76-75 to miss the cut and said afterward: 'I can do it when it's warm and not windy.'
'The times I've been over here, for some reason, my golf swing hasn't been where it needs to be,' DeChambeau said Tuesday. 'Right now it feels as good as it's ever been. Hitting it far, hitting it straight as I can, and learning how to putt better on these greens in windy conditions and rain and all that.
'It's just figuring it out. It's just going to take time and something that I never really experienced growing up in California.'

Lifting the claret jug — as unlikely as it would be, given his Open woes — would deliver the two-time U.S. Open champion a third major title and no doubt boost the already-swelling audience on his YouTube channel that has risen to more than 2 million subscribers.
His popularity is clear over in Northern Ireland, too. Late Monday, dozens of people — mostly kids — were seen waiting outside Portrush to get a photo with, or the autograph of, DeChambeau.
He obliged, happily.
DeChambeau is using YouTube to have some fun and to show the world a different side to him. He even suggested it's just as important as the results he gets.

'I'm not going to be here forever,' he said. 'What footprint do I want to leave? I think it humbles me and almost makes me more passionate about what I'm doing off the professional golf course.
'Am I going to get frustrated playing bad golf?" he posed. "Yeah. Am I going to want to still sign autographs? Yeah, because I care about the game.'
That's not to say he doesn't still have a burning desire to win at Portrush this week — and secure a result that will impress Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley in the process, ahead of the match against Europe in September.
'I feel pressure every week to play good for not only Keegan, but myself, and the people that I love online and everybody that's watching me," DeChambeau said.
'I'll walk through the fire,' he added, 'rather than run away from it.'

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — It was naturally a superb start by Tarik Skubal that resulted in a 2-1 Detroit Tigers win over the Texas Rangers on Sunday night that ended a season-worst six-game losing streak for the team with the best record in the major leagues. However, Skubal didn't get credit for the victory. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner and starter in Tuesday's All-Star Game cruised into the seventh inning with a two-hit shutout and a tenuous 1-0 lead. He left with runners at the corners and two outs, and the Rangers' Adolis García scored on a wild pitch by Tyler Holton. But Detroit's Matt Vierling hit a tiebreaking single with two outs in the eighth inning, and Will Vest entered in the eighth and got four straight outs — against the top four batters in Texas' order — for his 16th save for the Tigers (60-40). Skubal left the park still with 10 wins (one shy of the AL lead), 164 strikeouts (one behind Boston's Garrett Crochet) and a 2.19 ERA (tied with Crochet for the best in the American League). 'We're the first to 60, right? That matters more (than his personal stats),' Skubal said. 'We just haven't particularly been playing our best baseball, I don't think, for the last couple weeks. That's just part of the season. Not from lack of effort or anything like that. But I knew I wanted to win today. I expect every time I go out there to put our team in position to win, and we were able to do that.' Skubal struck out 11 and walked none in his seventh double-digit strikeout game this season. His final batter was a strikeout of Jonah Heim that left him at 105 pitches, three short of his career high. Tigers manager A.J. Caitlin Clark not expected to play when Indiana Fever resume season Tuesday at New York
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Caitlin Clark is not expected to be available on Tuesday night when Indiana resumes its season at the defending champion New York Liberty, Fever coach Stephanie White said. Clark missed Indiana's final game before the All-Star break with an injured right groin and pulled out of Friday night's 3-point contest as well as Saturday's All-Star Game. Clark told reporters on Saturday night that she had been getting treatment during the festivities, which also took place in Indianapolis. She was injured in the final minute of Tuesday's victory at Connecticut. While she is improving, White said, the Fever intend to be cautious with Clark, who missed 10 games during the first half of the season with three different muscle injuries. 'She's going to see some doctors and get more tests early in the week,' White said. 'I don't expect her to be available on Tuesday, so we're just going to take it one day at a time and let her get evaluations early this week and then, once we've done that, hopefully we'll have more of a clear vision of what it looks like.' Clark never missed a game because of injury during her college career at Iowa or last season when she was selected the WNBA's Rookie of the Year. The two-time All-Star is averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists and 5.0 rebounds this season for a team that was expected to contend for a league championship. But Clark's injuries and other obstacles have kept the Fever hovering near the middle of the standings with a 12-11 mark. Brewers sweep Dodgers, extend win streak to 10 games
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Abner Uribe retired Mookie Betts with the bases loaded for the final out, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5 on Sunday for their 10th straight victory. Shohei Ohtani hit a two-run homer for the Dodgers, but Isaac Collins snapped a sixth-inning tie with a two-run single as the Brewers finished 6-0 this season against the defending World Series champions. They extended their longest winning streak since 2021 by sweeping the NL West leaders for the second time in two weeks. Los Angeles has dropped 10 of 12 overall. Collins' two-out single to center field off reliever Lou Trivino (3-1) broke a 4-all tie and put Milwaukee ahead for good after a back-and-forth start. The Dodgers cut their deficit to a run in the ninth and loaded the bases with two outs, but Uribe got Betts to line out to center for his sixth major league save and second this year. Coming off his first All-Star appearance, Ryan (10-4) gave up one run and five hits with no walks. The right-hander worked a scoreless fourth inning with two strikeouts in the All-Star Game last Tuesday night at Atlanta. (AP) — Jackson Holliday, Alex Jackson and Ryan O'Hearn homered to lead Baltimore to a rain-delayed win over Tampa Bay. The game at George M. Steinbrenner Field was delayed for 2 hours, 36 minutes before the seventh inning. Holliday hit his 13th homer of the season on the second pitch of the game from Tampa Bay's Ryan Pepiot (6-8). Jackson opened a three-run third with his first home run of the season, and O'Hearn's shot in the sixth was his 12th of the season. Gunnar Henderson capped Baltimore's outburst in the third inning with a two-run single. Trevor Rogers (3–1) allowed two runs on five hits over six innings while striking out three as the Orioles snapped a four-game skid. Closer Felix Bautista allowed his second run in his last 17 appearances in the ninth and got out of a bases-loaded jam by striking out Junior Caminero for his 19th save. Caminero had an RBI single in the third inning and Danny Jansen hit a solo homer, his 11th, in the fourth for the Rays. Ryan Pepiot (6–8) went six innings for Tampa Bay, giving up five runs on six hits. He struck out eight and walked one. DIAMONDBACKS 5, CARDINALS 3 PHOENIX (AP) — Eugenio Suárez homered twice for the second consecutive day and Merrill Kelly allowed two runs in six innings to help Arizona beat St. Louis. Suárez has six multihomer games this season — including a four-homer game on April 26 — and leads the majors with 20 home runs since June 1. He launched a three-run drive off starter Miles Mikolas (5-7) in the first inning and a solo shot in the third. The slugger leads the National League with 35 homers, one more than Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani, and his 85 RBIs are tops in the big leagues — two ahead of Seattle catcher Cal Raleigh. Yohel Pozo, Jordan Walker and Victor Scott II drew consecutive walks to load the bases for St. Louis with no outs in the fifth. Two batters later, Taylor Trammell added his second homer of the season to double the Astros' lead. Trammell added a two-run double in the seventh inning. The Astros were resilient after falling behind 3-0 after three innings. They tied the game in the fifth on a fielding error by J.P. Crawford and a two-run double by Cam Smith . Houston starter Hunter Brown allowed three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts in four innings. Four relievers worked five shutout innings with right-hander Kaleb Ort (2-1) earning the win. TIGERS 2, RANGERS 1 ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Matt Vierling hit a tiebreaking single with two outs in the eighth inning and Detroit snapped a season-worst six-game losing streak by beating Texas.
