Chelsea dealt huge injury blow on the eve of the new Premier League season as Levi Colwill is ruled out for MONTHS with ACL injury - which could force Blues into hunt for a new defender
Chelsea and England have been dealt a crushing blow with Levi Colwill forced to undergo surgery on an ACL injury suffered on his first day back in pre-season training. The influential 22-year-old picked up the serious problem in the final few minutes of the Blues' opening session of 2025-26 after a three-week break following the Club World Cup. He was sent for a scan to assess the damage and after Chelsea's worst fears were confirmed, an immediate decision was taken to send him for an operation. The club last night told us that his surgery had been successful, but Colwill will be sidelined for a significant period, much like James Maddison at Tottenham Hotspur after he likewise suffered a ruptured ACL this week. Colwill started all but three of Chelsea's Premier League fixtures last season while also helping them win the Conference League and Club World Cup. The Blues are now assessing whether to bring in a new central defender this month. Marc Guehi is one left-sided centre back they have long admired and the 25-year-old has now entered the final year of his contract at Crystal Palace, who are believed to value him at £40million. Chelsea sold Guehi to Palace for £18m in 2021 before their new owners, Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, took over the club. Maresca said yesterday on Colwill at a press conference ahead of their weekend friendlies versus Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan: 'We don't know how long he is going to be out. For sure, it's a problem for us. I spoke with him yesterday and told him that if we achieved what we achieved last year, it is also because of him and he was a main player for us.'

Crisis club Sheffield Wednesday have no idea whether their captain is allowed to play in Championship opener
SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY do not know whether captain Barry Bannan will be able to play in their Championship opener at Leicester on Sunday. The crisis club are under a number of registration embargoes after players and staff were paid late in May, June and July — and on Wednesday the EFL urged owner Dejphon Chansiri to sell. 3 Midfielder Bannan, 35, who joined the club in 2015, was out of contract at the end of June. He signed a new deal on Saturday but might not be available against the Foxes. New Owls boss Henrik Pedersen said: 'People in the club are trying to find out the situation. Right now I don't know. 'It's a strange situation, I hope we can get clarity very soon so we know more before the training session on Friday.' Pedersen, 47, stepped up from assistant after German manager Danny Rohl left by mutual consent last month. He also said he had no indication that any of the 15 senior players left were not intending to play on Sunday. They cancelled a pre-season friendly against Burnley last weekend. It is understood full-back Max Lowe handed in his notice last week. CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS 3 Pedersen praised the the club's staff after a chaotic summer. The Dane added: 'The last two days' sessions we have had fantastic energy in the group. I have to say I have big, big respect for our players and how they have handled the situation. 'It's difficult, and there are a lot of mornings that they are coming, and there are different energy levels for individuals. 'But how they have handled it as a group and how my staff have supported them... 'We have had a lot of good sessions — it has impressed me. 'It's a tough situation, but the players do a great job.'
