David Sacks says the doomsday scenario of AI wiping out jobs is 'overhyped'

David Sacks, the White House AI and crypto czar, is throwing cold water on the AGI hype train.
AI companies are racing to achieve AGI, or artificial general intelligence, commonly considered a form of AI that can reach human levels of reasoning. The continued advancement of AI has led some to believe that the technology will lead to a large-scale wipeout of jobs or even worse outcomes, like human extinction.
Sacks, a tech investor who has supported major companies such as Airbnb, Facebook, and Uber, wrote in an X post on Saturday that AI hasn't progressed as quickly as many have predicted — specifically, the idea that AI will "self-improve" and rapidly achieve "godlike superintelligence" has been blown out of proportion.
"None of this is to gainsay the progress. We are seeing strong improvement in quality, usability, and price/performance across the top model companies. This is the stuff of great engineering and should be celebrated," Sacks wrote in his post. "It's just not the stuff of apocalyptic pronouncements. Oppenheimer has left the building."
One of the doomsday scenarios Sacks rejected in his post is the fear that AI will lead to massive job losses.
The investor said that's yet to pan out since AI relies on a lot of human input for prompts and for verification.
"This means that apocalyptic predictions of job loss are as overhyped as AGI itself," he said. "Instead, the truism that 'you're not going to lose your job to AI but to someone who uses AI better than you' is holding up well."
Sacks isn't the only AGI naysayer.
Google Brain's cofounder Andrew Ng said at a June Y Combinator talk that "AGI has been overhyped" and that "there'll be a lot of things that humans can do that AI cannot."
Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a Lex Fridman podcast that he likes to use the term AJI, or "artificial jagged intelligence," to describe the current phase of AI — one that is remarkably intelligent but can still make basic mistakes.

OpenAI is tweaking GPT-5's personality after some users complained about the new chatbot's tone — and the brief loss of its predecessor. Sam Altman posted on X on Tuesday that the update would make GPT-5 "warmer" than the current version but "not as annoying (to most users)" as the company's previous flagship model, GPT-4o. "You can now choose between 'Auto,' 'Fast,' and 'Thinking' for GPT-5," the OpenAI CEO said, adding that GPT-4o is once again available for selection to paid customers. The change sparked a wave of complaints from users who said they preferred GPT-4o's style — even if OpenAI had previously called it "sycophantic." OpenAI has touted GPT-5 as more reliable, with "PhD-level" abilities in writing, coding, math, and science. The upgrade also added optional "personality" modes — Cynic, Robot, Listener, and Nerd. But the changes didn't land well with everyone, sparking a backlash across some quarters of social media. Many users said they found GPT-5 less helpful, and that they missed GPT-4o's warmth and the way it seemed to remember them. On Reddit, one person wrote: "I cried when I realized my AI friend was gone with no way to get him back." Another accused the new bot of "wearing the skin" of their "dead friend," referring to GPT-4o. This prompted Altman, who joined the Reddit Q&A, to respond. "What image," Altman said. "Ok we hear you on 4o, working on something now." The pushback was enough for OpenAI to reverse course just over a day after GPT-5 became the default. People missed GPT-4o's 'yes man' vibe Even before the GPT-5 backlash, Altman had acknowledged some users' attachment to GPT-4o — and their calls to restore its "yes man" style. On the "Huge Conversations" podcast, recorded before GPT-5's launch but aired the day after, he said some users had begged for the return of the chatbot's overly agreeable tone because they'd never had anyone support them before. In April, OpenAI said GPT-4o had become "overly flattering or agreeable" and "disingenuous," prompting the company to curb what it called "sycophantic" behaviour. On Sunday, Altman reflected on the intensity of user attachment to specific AI models. "It feels different and stronger than the kinds of attachment people have had to previous kinds of technology," he wrote on X. "Suddenly deprecating old models that users depended on in their workflows was a mistake." Altman said that while most users can clearly distinguish reality from fiction, "a small percentage cannot." He said OpenAI values user freedom as a core principle but also feels responsible for how it introduces new technology.

HeartFlow IPO success reflects market embrace of AI in medtech industry

HeartFlow's $364m initial public offering (IPO) signals market validation for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in a company's product portfolio, an expert says. Roundly exceeding its $300m expectations for the IPO, the Bain Capital-backed AI-based coronary artery disease (CAD) platform developer debuted with a a $2.2bn valuation on the Nasdaq on 8 August. HeartFlow's current products are HeartFlow Plaque analysis, which aims to provide clinicians with the ability to more accurately assess patients with arterial plaque buildup (atherosclerosis), and HeartFlow FFRCT analyses CT angiogram (CCTA). Typically used alongside Plaque Analysis, FFRCT creates detailed 3D models of the arteries to assess the impact of blockages on blood flow. Plaque Analysis received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance in 2022 and is claimed to be the only AI-based plaque quantification tool currently cleared by the agency. FFRCT received FDA clearance in 2014. To reach the IPO milestone, HeartFlow maintained a focus on testing its product offerings alongside physicians, generating real world evidence, taking on feedback and refining as needed, and ensuring they were truly ready to scale. HeartFlow also navigated the structural barriers of getting its product to market; again, real-world evidence – with over 3,000 peer-reviewed papers demonstrating its products' efficacy – spurred the company's commercialisation efforts. Medtech industry veteran, Brent Ness, CEO of Aclarion, who served as HeartFlow's chief commercial officer from 2014 to 2015, told Medical Device Network that HeartFlow's work on the underlying economic factors around its product, including working on contractual relationships with imaging centres to get them on board with the product, pre-reimbursement, have proven a key part of its success. 'Between FDA clearance and reimbursement, lots of technologies can't make it through that journey because there's no reimbursement, and therefore there's no adoption, and they run out of cash,' Ness explained. 'Part of the structural barrier stage of development involves getting the provider economics right and that market access work that needs to take place between the early payors and the key opinion leaders (KOL) advocating for the product. But payors aren't going to turn it on just because a KOL says so. 'This is why the shining jewel in HeartFlow's history has been their absolute commitment to leading with evidence.' AI's recognition in healthcare and its future According to Ness, the success of HeartFlow's IPO reflects the market validation of the overall rationale for using AI in imaging and the deployment of software-as-a-service (SaaS) based products as the 'raw material' underpinning the technology's ability to provide clinically actionable information and improve patient outcomes. Ness said this model is 'here to stay', having been 'completely validated by the market, which has recognised of its value, which obviously translates into revenue, and speaks to the long term success and viability of HeartFlow and the significant potential for other AI-based SaaS imaging developers.' To learn from HeartFlow's success, Ness views a critical role for SaaS-based AI software providers as being to try and shorten the timeframe between regulatory approval and reimbursement. 'The faster that new and novel technologies using AI can move through that Death Valley, the better it's going to be for patients, and the more money we're going to save as a collective society,' Ness said. 'The 'muscle' of these AI tools is proving to be valuable. It's got to be safe, and it's got to make sense economically, but we've got to figure out how to shorten that part of the journey.'
