Dan Buettner, a National Geographic fellow who has spent decades studying the habits and diets of the world's longest-living people, says walking is the most powerful tool we have for adding years to our lives.
'There's no pill, there's no supplement, no longevity hack that's been shown to add years to your life expectancy,' Buettner revealed on Instagram.
'But there's one simple thing that most people can do to get three more years.
'If you're sedentary, if you move from getting zero physical activity to just 20 minutes of walking a day, it adds three years to your life expectancy.
'Very simple hack, costs you nothing, and we'll see you when you're 100.'
Walking is not just low-impact and accessible - it also works the cardiovascular system, improves circulation, boosts mood, and can even reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes.
Research consistently links daily movement to improved quality of life, particularly in older adults.
Studies show that regular walking can also help maintain mobility, balance, and independence well into old age.
The 'Blue Zones' connection
Buettner is best known for identifying the so-called Blue Zones - regions around the world where people routinely live past 100, including parts of Japan, Italy, Costa Rica, and Greece.
One thing these long-living communities share is they walk - a lot.
Not necessarily in the form of intense workouts, but also through built-in, everyday movement like walking to the market, tending gardens, or visiting friends.
Experts have previously said that you don't need to run marathons to be healthy, but you do need to walk - and you need to do it every day.
Buettner also previously highlighted the unexpected snack food that Dan says you can enjoy guilt-free to have a long life: popcorn.
'The best longevity snack might already be in your pantry,' teased a caption accompanying the video.
The food in question? Air-popped popcorn.
'Let me tell you about the best snack that you can eat to live to 100 - but you can also afford,' Dan said.
'Popcorn. Air-popped popcorn.'
The American researcher said there are some little-known health benefits to the humble snack.
'It's very high in fibre. It's very high in complex carbohydrates,' Dan said in the video.
'It even has more polyphenols than a lot of vegetables - people don't realize that.'
The author of The Blue Zones Solution: Eating and Living like the World's Healthiest People added in his latest video that the beauty of popcorn is that it's also budget-friendly.
'Everybody can afford it,' he said.
How to make air-popped popcorn
1. Add 5tbsp of oil to a medium size saucepan with a lid over a medium high heat
2. Once hot, add ½ cup of corn kernels and cover with the lid
3. Once the popping starts, shake the pot regularly until the popping ceases
4. Remove from the heat and empty into a large bowl, discarding any un-popped kernels

Dan concluded in the 28-second video that popcorn was an 'easy' and accessible snack.
'It is easy to make. It's easy to store. And most importantly, it's delicious,' Dan said.
Homemade air-popped popcorn is distinct from store-bought packets, microwave popcorn or movie popcorn, in that it's made using no added ingredients beyond being cooked in a small amount of hot oil.
Although Dan didn't make specific mention of it in his video, it is fair to presume that he recommends enjoying air-popped popcorn without the addition of any other added ingredients like salt or butter.
The latest video has notched up over 726,000 views on TikTok, with many commenters excited by the findings.
'My favourite snack! Pop mine in avocado oil!' one popcorn lover replied on Instagram.
'Glad I'm already doing that as my weekly habit using olive oil!' added another.

Patients see doctors in a white coat as professional and trustworthy but often mistake a female medic wearing one for a nurse or medical assistant, a study has found. Female physicians are 'unfairly judged based on appearance and attire, which affected patients' perceptions of professionalism and competency', according to a global review of the evidence around patients' impressions of what doctors wear. 'Female physicians are often judged more on appearance than their male counterparts,' it said. 'The way female physicians dress significantly influences perceptions of competence and professionalism, highlighting the gendered expectations that patients hold. 'Even when male and female physicians wore identical attire, female physicians were still more likely to be misidentified as nurses or medical assistants.' The researchers found that 'gender-related perceptions of physician attire' existed across the 13 countries studied, including the US, India, Japan, China and Germany. The paper, published in the journal BMJ Open, is based on an analysis of 32 previously published studies on perceptions of doctors' clothing. 'The expectations regarding attire are often gendered, particularly affecting the recognition and respect given to female physicians,' the paper's co-authors write. Such behaviour is so widespread that hospitals and other healthcare providers should try to reduce bias among patients and 'foster equitable perceptions' of male and female medics, they add. The white coat has been a symbol of medical expertise for decades. Its association in patients' minds with cleanliness and professionalism meant that 'white medical coats became the standard attire for physicians worldwide in the 20th century'. Until then, doctors had generally worn black clothing to reflect the seriousness of meetings with patients. People receiving healthcare find the white coat reassuring, the study found. 'Regardless of gender, patients exhibited favourable attitudes towards physicians wearing white coats, perceiving the physicians as trustworthy, respectful, skilled, communicative and empathetic.' The white coat is still widely used by doctors worldwide. However, it was banned in the UK in 2008, when the government decided that medics working in the NHS should follow a 'bare below the elbows' approach to reduce their risk of spreading infections. The British Medical Association was unsure that evidence justified the change. Despite patients' preference for doctors wearing formal clothing, the Covid-19 pandemic made them more accepting of scrubs. 'Patients tended to feel more comfortable with physicians wearing scrubs after Covid-19 ceased. While the traditional white coat is seen as a symbol of professionalism and trust, patients have increasingly accepted scrubs, especially in emergency or high-risk settings,' the researchers found. Globally, male doctors seem to enjoy another advantage in many patients' minds as to what they wear. 'Patients' perceptions of male physicians' accessories have shown that details such as watches and glasses significantly impact professionalism and trustworthiness' and add to their perceived authority, the study found.

VA hospitals are finding it harder to fill jobs, watchdog says
Government-run medical centers serving the nation's veterans have reported an increase in severe staffing shortages, with many hospitals having trouble filling jobs for doctors, nurses and psychologists, according to an independent watchdog for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Tuesday's report from the VA's Office of Inspector General is based on surveys from late March and early April that were taken at 139 Veterans Health Administration facilities. Severe staffing shortages are not necessarily an indication of vacancies but refer to particular occupations that are difficult to fill. The surveys were taken just weeks after it was reported in early March that the VA had planned to cut 80,000 jobs — out of 484,000 — through the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE. The VA later reduced the figure to nearly 30,000 jobs to be cut by this fiscal year's end on Sept. 30. President Donald Trump 's administration said Tuesday that the surveys are unreliable because they do not reflect actual vacancies, which VA officials said were in line with historical averages. But Democratic lawmakers warned that veterans won't get the health care they need as VA positions become harder to fill. The surveys reflected a 50% increase in the reporting of severe staffing shortages for specific jobs, both for clinical occupations that include doctors and psychologists and for non-clinical jobs that include police and custodial workers. Nearly all of the facilities — 94% — reported a shortage for medical officer occupations that include doctors, while 79% reported shortages for nurses. The report noted that severe shortages for medical officers and nurses have been identified every year in the report since 2014. Pete Kasperowicz, the VA's press secretary, stressed in an email that the report is not based on vacancies and is therefore 'not a reliable indicator of staffing shortages.' 'The report simply lists occupations facilities feel are difficult for which to recruit and retain, so the results are completely subjective, not standardized and unreliable,' Kasperowicz wrote. He said that vacancy rates for doctors and nurses are 14% and 10%, respectively, which he said are lower than most other health care systems and in line with 'normal VA historical averages.' But Jacqueline Simon, policy director for the American Federation of Government Employees, said the surveys reflect the Trump administration's profound hostility toward the federal workforce and what she said are its plans to ultimately privatize the VA. 'This is a deliberate effort to incapacitate and to undermine veterans' support for and approval of the care they receive in VA hospitals and clinics,' Simon said. 'They'll have to wait much longer for appointments. There won't be specialists available. They'll have no choice but to go to the private sector.' Simon also noted the VA's announcement last week that it was terminating collective bargaining agreements for most VA bargaining-unit employees, which could further hurt recruitment. The VA said in a news release that the move will 'make it easier for VA leaders to promote high-performing employees, hold poor performers accountable, and improve benefits and services to America's Veterans.' But U.S. Sen. Mark Warner said in a news release Tuesday that the Trump administration has made it harder for public servants to do their jobs 'and ultimately harder for veterans to get the care they've earned.' 'We also know from recent jobs reports that applications to work at the VA are plummeting," said Warner, a Democrat who represents the veteran-dense state of Virginia. 'How do skyrocketing staffing shortages and declining applicant pools make it more 'efficient' for veterans to access the care and services they deserve? The answer is: they don't.'

What is a colonoscopy and should I get one?
Colorectal cancer is the third-most diagnosed cancer and third leading cause of cancer deaths in the US, according to the Cancer Research Institute. It is also the third-most common cancer in the UK, and accounted for 12.6% of new cancer cases in the country in 2021. Rates of the disease have dropped overall in recent decades, but in those under 50, rates have increased significantly. 'Individuals born in the 1980s are about twice as likely to get colorectal cancer as those born in the 1960s, and individuals born in the 1990s are about three times as likely,' says Dr Zachariah Foda, assistant professor of medicine and oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Experts don't know the reasons behind this increase, but medical guidelines have shifted to address it. In 2021, the recommended age to start colorectal cancer screening in the US – either by colonoscopy or at-home testing – was lowered from 50 to 45. In the UK, screening is currently offered starting at age 52, and will soon be offered to those aged 50. Colorectal cancer is preventable and 'highly treatable' if detected early, according to the National Cancer Institute. But fewer than 20% of those aged 45 to 49 are keeping up with screenings, compared with 72% of those aged 50 to 75. Experts say some people don't know they should be getting screened, and others are nervous about what colonoscopies entail. Here's what you need to know about colonoscopies and colorectal cancer screening. 'A colonoscopy is an endoscopic procedure, meaning we use a camera at the end of a long tube to examine the colon and rectum,' explains Foda. The colon itself is about 70cm long, he says. Patients are first put under sedation or anesthesia. Doctors then insert the scope into their rectum, and examine the lining of the colon for any abnormalities, like masses or small bumps called polyps. These polyps are usually removed during the procedure. 'The closest analogy is, you have a mole on your skin and it's growing or discolored, and doctors remove it,' says Michael Sapienza, CEO of the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, a colorectal cancer advocacy group in the US. If a mass is too big to remove during the colonoscopy, the doctor will take a sample to biopsy and test for cancer. A colonoscopy is an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home the same day. The procedure itself usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes, but with pre- and post-procedure care, the whole process can last two to three hours, says Dr Andres Carrion, a gastroenterologist at GastroMed Miami. One of the most common concerns about colonoscopies is that they are painful, says Carrion. But 'intravenous sedatives make the procedure easy, and there is no pain or discomfort', he explains. Colonoscopy preparation starts about a week before the procedure. Patients are instructed to eat a 'low residue' diet for that week, which means avoiding foods that can make it difficult for doctors to get a good look at the lining of the colon. 'These are things that the body takes a while to get rid of, like seeds, nuts, leafy greens and high fiber things,' says Foda. The day before the procedure, patients are restricted to a clear liquid diet – no solid foods. And the night before, they take laxatives to fully clear the colon. This can result in spending quite a bit of time on the toilet. 'Hopefully you have some good reading or a movie you can watch on your phone,' says Sapienza. Colonoscopies are generally extremely safe, but as with any medical procedure, there are risks. According to the Cleveland Clinic, these include an adverse reaction to the sedative or anaesthetic used, dehydration from the preparation process, slight bleeding after a polyp is removed or mass biopsied, some abdominal pain, infection and a perforated bowel. This last risk is serious, but rare. One review found that there were four bowel perforations for every 10,000 colonoscopies performed. Above the age of 75, screening needs are determined on a case-by-case basis. Depending on a person's health and medical history, doctors may decide that colonoscopies could do more harm than good. For those with a first-degree family member – meaning a parent, sibling or child – diagnosed with colorectal cancer, Carrion says screening should start 10 years before the age at which your relative was diagnosed. For example, if your mother was diagnosed with colon cancer when she was 45, you should start getting screened at 35. Certain medical histories also put individuals at a higher risk for colorectal cancer, says Foda. This includes those who have previously had cancer and have received chemotherapy, those with inflammatory bowel disease, as well as those with Lynch syndrome (a condition that increases an individual's risk for many kinds of cancer) and polyposis (a condition characterized by a large number of polyps in the colon). Colonoscopies are not the only way to screen for colorectal cancer. For those at an average risk of the disease, there are also non-invasive at-home tests like Cologuard and the fecal immunochemical test (FIT), says Sapienza. For both tests, a patient will receive the necessary testing material in the mail or from a doctor. They will then have to mail in a personal fecal sample. The FIT analyzes whether there is blood in the stool. The Cologuard test looks for both blood in the stool and abnormal DNA that could point to polyps or masses in the colon. The frequency for each person depends on a number of factors including the type of test performed and medical history. If a colonoscopy is completely clear, you can usually wait 10 years before your next procedure, says Sapienza, but check with your doctor. Current guidance recommends that FIT tests be repeated every year, and Cologuard every three years, says Sapienza. If the test is negative, no further analysis is required. If either test comes back positive, you will have to have a colonoscopy. This does not mean the at-home tests are not effective at detecting the disease alone, says Foda. 'They should be viewed as part of the gold standard for colorectal cancer screening.' In addition to regular screenings, be familiar with possible symptoms of colorectal cancer, says Sapienza. This is especially important for those under 45, who might not be eligible yet for screenings. These symptoms include blood in the stool, especially dark blood; a change in bowel habits; anemia; involuntary weight loss; and/or ongoing stomach discomfort. If you start to present with any of these symptoms, talk to your primary care doctor or gastroenterologist, and ask for a colonoscopy, he says. 'We need to make sure that people are aware of these symptoms,' says Sapienza. 'This is a disease where screening saves lives.'
