Kolkata fire survivors recollect ‘terrifying' incident

The Hindu30-04-2025

A 10-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy from Tamil Nadu, who were visiting West Bengal with their family, were among the casualties of a fire in a hotel in central Kolkata's Burrabazar, which took at least 14 lives on Tuesday night.
On Wednesday (April 30, 2025), after identity verification, the post-mortem of the two children was completed at Kolkata's Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital (NRSMCH). A sombre atmosphere prevailed outside the hospital morgue, where the bodies of five victims had been sent for post-mortem.
The two children were identified as P. Rathin and P. Diya by the police. The family hails from the southern State's Karur district, and was on a tour of West Bengal for the past few days.
The bereaved mother, who waited at the hospital morgue for hours on Wednesday afternoon, left in the evening, sobbing profusely as the bodies of her children were taken out in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation's (KMC) hearse vans.
Weeping, she said her son would go everywhere with his father. 'Yesterday, they did not come with us when we stepped out. My son wanted to watch TV. Why did I leave them behind? Why did we not take them along?' she said, overtaken by grief.
'My children were with me for only a few years. How can I go on without them now? My husband and I were raising them with so much labour and love. He would pick them up; they would kiss us on our cheeks,' she said, speaking in both Tamil and English.
Three acquaintances, possibly Kolkata locals, accompanied her. The grief-stricken mother was surrounded by police personnel and KMC officials, stationed through the day at the NRSMCH.
A high-ranking KMC official told The Hindu that arrangements had been made to preserve the bodies of the deceased in the mortuary till the bereaved families could arrange to take them home.
Preliminary reports have suggested 'those who died were victims of suffocation/jumping etc.', West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee posted on social media.
Terror-stricken
After the fire broke out at about 8.15 p.m. on Tuesday night, several of the hotel's guests as well as staff were seen jumping from the higher floors to escape. Many were rescued by Fire Services personnel. Survivors said the staircase of the hotel had filled with dense and toxic smoke, as did the corridors, rendering them inaccessible.
Neha and Akash Agarwal from Odisha said they had broken the windows of their room to stand on the flat protruding area outside in order to escape.
'Our nephew called us and said a fire had broken out, and that we should leave immediately. We thought of taking the stairs, but when we opened the door to our room, we saw the place was filled with smoke. I shut the door and broke the glass window so that we could breathe. I asked my wife and nephew to wait on the platform on the outer wall of the building,' Mr. Agarwal told local media persons.
His wife said they were in Kolkata on a holiday and could not have imagined experiencing such a 'terrifying' incident. 'The fire alarms and firefighting equipment in the hotel were all defunct. The hotel staff did not help either. The only help we got while escaping was from the police and the Fire Services personnel,' the couple said.

Mehul Choksi takes ‘kidnapping' allegations against India to UK court; claims denied

Mehul Choksi, the businessman wanted in India to face charges in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, is suing the Indian government and five individuals in the High Court in London as conspirators for his alleged 'kidnap, torture and attempted rendition'. The Indian authorities have denied the allegations and objected to the UK jurisdiction on the basis of 'state immunity' and also sought permission for expert evidence on Indian law and the Indian Constitution to be taken into account. During a case management hearing listed before Justice Freedman on Monday, the court was told that Choksi claims to have been tortured back in May 2021 as part of a kidnap attempt 'orchestrated by the government of India'. 'For the avoidance of doubt, nothing in these submissions is intended to waive or should be interpreted as waiving India's state immunity,' the court was told this week by the Indian side. Choksi was accused of making 'extremely serious allegations against India, alleging it masterminded an international plot to kidnap and harm him'. 'It is India's position that the present claim is being pursued principally with the (misguided) intention of attempting to cause embarrassment to India and obtain leverage in the Claimant's international attempts to avoid extradition,' barrister Harish Salve argued on behalf of the Indian authorities. Choksi's lawyers, led by barrister Edward Fitzgerald, allege that there was a collusion between five individuals in the attack on him in Antigua to be forcibly taken to Dominica in the Caribbean with the purpose of being 'rendered' to India. 'The Defendants thereby entered into an unlawful means conspiracy whereby the Defendants agreed to, and then did, inflict unlawful and injurious acts on the Claimant by means of assault, battery, false imprisonment, unlawful detention, and/or unlawful restriction of liberty,' Choksi's legal claim reads. The businessman, meanwhile, remains in custody in Belgium, fighting against his extradition to India. He is wanted in India along with his nephew, Nirav Modi, who remains behind bars in London after repeated attempts at bail have been denied by the English courts. There are three sets of criminal proceedings against Nirav in India – the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) case of fraud on PNB, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) case relating to the alleged laundering of the proceeds of that fraud and a third set of criminal proceedings involving alleged interference with evidence and witnesses in the CBI proceedings. In April 2021, then UK home secretary Priti Patel had ordered his extradition to face these charges in the Indian courts after a prima facie case was established against him. But recent court hearings in London have alluded to a "confidential" impediment to his extradition, believed to be an asylum application.

Soccer-FA charges referee Coote in relation to comments on Klopp

June 17 - Premier League referee David Coote was charged by the Football Association on Tuesday in relation to comments he made about former Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp in a video that went viral last year. Coote had been sacked by English soccer referees' body PGMOL after a video, recorded in July 2020, circulated on social media showing the official allegedly abusing Klopp and after a full investigation, his position was deemed untenable. "It's alleged that the referee acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words contrary to FA Rule E3.1," the FA said in a statement. "It's further alleged that this constitutes an 'Aggravated Breach', which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to nationality." Rule E3 deals with improper conduct that brings the game into disrepute, including insulting words or behaviour, while it also covers actions that question the integrity of match officials. In November, the FA said they were also investigating allegations that Coote had discussed booking a player the day before a game with a friend, which the referee denied. "No charges have been issued in relation to allegations of gambling misconduct against David Coote, which were also fully investigated," the FA added. Europe's soccer governing body also said Coote was banned from any UEFA refereeing activity until June 2026. The 42-year-old had apologised for his actions. The Sun also published a video which the newspaper said showed Coote appearing to snort white powder during his time working as a match official at Euro 2024.
