Kolkata fire survivors recollect ‘terrifying' incident
On Wednesday (April 30, 2025), after identity verification, the post-mortem of the two children was completed at Kolkata's Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital (NRSMCH). A sombre atmosphere prevailed outside the hospital morgue, where the bodies of five victims had been sent for post-mortem.
The two children were identified as P. Rathin and P. Diya by the police. The family hails from the southern State's Karur district, and was on a tour of West Bengal for the past few days.
The bereaved mother, who waited at the hospital morgue for hours on Wednesday afternoon, left in the evening, sobbing profusely as the bodies of her children were taken out in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation's (KMC) hearse vans.
Weeping, she said her son would go everywhere with his father. 'Yesterday, they did not come with us when we stepped out. My son wanted to watch TV. Why did I leave them behind? Why did we not take them along?' she said, overtaken by grief.
'My children were with me for only a few years. How can I go on without them now? My husband and I were raising them with so much labour and love. He would pick them up; they would kiss us on our cheeks,' she said, speaking in both Tamil and English.
Three acquaintances, possibly Kolkata locals, accompanied her. The grief-stricken mother was surrounded by police personnel and KMC officials, stationed through the day at the NRSMCH.
A high-ranking KMC official told The Hindu that arrangements had been made to preserve the bodies of the deceased in the mortuary till the bereaved families could arrange to take them home.
Preliminary reports have suggested 'those who died were victims of suffocation/jumping etc.', West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee posted on social media.
Terror-stricken
After the fire broke out at about 8.15 p.m. on Tuesday night, several of the hotel's guests as well as staff were seen jumping from the higher floors to escape. Many were rescued by Fire Services personnel. Survivors said the staircase of the hotel had filled with dense and toxic smoke, as did the corridors, rendering them inaccessible.
Neha and Akash Agarwal from Odisha said they had broken the windows of their room to stand on the flat protruding area outside in order to escape.
'Our nephew called us and said a fire had broken out, and that we should leave immediately. We thought of taking the stairs, but when we opened the door to our room, we saw the place was filled with smoke. I shut the door and broke the glass window so that we could breathe. I asked my wife and nephew to wait on the platform on the outer wall of the building,' Mr. Agarwal told local media persons.
His wife said they were in Kolkata on a holiday and could not have imagined experiencing such a 'terrifying' incident. 'The fire alarms and firefighting equipment in the hotel were all defunct. The hotel staff did not help either. The only help we got while escaping was from the police and the Fire Services personnel,' the couple said.

Sri Lanka govt slams opposition plan to stage protest on Monday
Colombo, Aug 17 (PTI) Sri Lanka government on Sunday slammed the opposition's plan to stage protests in north and east regions on Monday calling it a 'political exercise." Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) had called for day-long action to protest against the killing of a civilian in a clash with the military at Oddusuddan in the northeastern Mullaithivu district. 'This is clearly an attempt to intimidate the people in the north and east by frustrated political parties", Nalinda Jayathissa, the minister of information told reporters on Sunday. 'This incident had happened on August 7 and by August 9 three soldiers were arrested", Jayathissa said, adding that people are being misled for a political purpose. TNA and SLMC had initially planned to stage a protest on August 15 but it was postponed for Monday. The TNA said a group of Tamil youth who had visited the military camp in the area were assaulted by the military and later one of them was found dead drowned in a stream while trying to escape the military assault. Waruna Gamage, military spokesman, rejected the allegations of assault against the military and claimed that the group of youth were intruders. The arrested soldiers have been remanded till August 19 and they would be subject to an identification parade to conduct further investigations, police spokesman FT Wootler said. Trump admin tightens citizenship rules, USCIS expands scope of ‘good moral character'
The Trump administration is indicating it will examine applications from legal immigrants seeking US citizenship more closely, as part of its latest move to restrict access to immigration benefits. The federal agency responsible for legal immigration, US Citizenship and Immigration Services, asked officers on Friday to consider additional factors when assessing whether immigrants applying for US citizenship possess a 'good moral character," according to a report by CBS News. A USCIS notification states that, 'One of the requirements for naturalisation is good moral character (GMC). An applicant for naturalisation must show that he or she has been, and continues to be, a person of good moral character.' The notice further added, 'In general, the applicant must show GMC during the five-year period immediately preceding his or her application for naturalisation and up to the time of the Oath of Allegiance. Conduct prior to the five-year period may also impact whether the applicant meets the requirement.' Reflecting "a good moral character" has always been a key requirement for US citizenship, in addition to passing English and civics tests. Earlier, the "good moral character" assessment typically consisted of an applicant who did not have any record of criminal offences or disqualifying conduct specified in US laws. It included crimes such as murder, aggravated felonies, drug offences and being a habitual drunkard. However, USCIS's policy issued Friday widened the scope of 'good moral character.' The agency stated that it must involve "more than a cursory mechanical review focused on the absence of wrongdoing." The officers have been asked to conduct a 'holistic assessment of an alien's behaviour, adherence to societal norms, and positive contributions that affirmatively demonstrate good moral character.' Applicants will be given "greater emphasis" based on "positive attributes and contributions," such as community involvement, family caregiving and ties, educational achievement, "stable and lawful" employment, duration of residence in the US, and tax payment history. The new USCIS policy instructs officers to consider factors that indicate an applicant's rehabilitation after wrongdoing, such as adherence to probation, paying overdue taxes or child support, and receiving community support letters.
