What Is PM Modi's ‘Sudarshan Chakra'? A Mega Shield Of AI-Powered Missiles, Radars & Laser Defences

News182 days ago
Speaking from Red Fort on I-Day and ahead of Krishna Janmashtami, PM Modi said, 'We have chosen the path of Krishna's Sudarshan Chakra...we will build 'Rashtriya Suraksha Kavach'.'
During a high-level security meeting in June, India's leadership formally set its sights on building its own indigenous multi-layer aerial defence shield. The officials aware of the development said that the idea gained urgency during Operation Sindoor, when the need for a more robust system to counter multiple layers of aerial threats became evident.
On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the name of the initiative — 'Sudarshan Chakra' — a programme over a decade in the making, aimed at creating a comprehensive, indigenous, and integrated aerial defence system.
According to officials who spoke to News18 on the condition of anonymity, the project is still in its early stages, with the overall structure and specific technologies yet to be finalised.
Operation Sindoor has shown why being self-reliant in the world of defence and security matters. Likewise, we need to be self-reliant in areas like technology, space and energy. A senior government official said that the system will be calibrated to integrate with India's existing minor aerial defence framework, protecting cities, military bases, and critical infrastructure such as power plants, railways, ports, and hospitals from a wide spectrum of aerial threats.
Another senior government official who had worked with similar Defence Technology earlier described the envisioned technology as 'a nationwide network of radars, command-and-control centres, and interceptor missiles, capable of detecting, tracking, and neutralising incoming missiles, drones, artillery shells, and even swarms or loitering munitions in real time, with artificial intelligence likely playing a central role."
The Sudarshan Chakra is likely to form part of a multi-layer strategy, operating alongside current systems like Akash, S-400, and QR-SAM, as well as future laser-based interceptors, to provide overlapping protection against short-, medium-, and long-range threats — effectively functioning as an umbrella defence network.
Developed under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, the programme will involve the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and multiple private-sector partners already working on related projects. Unlike Israel's Iron Dome, which is focused on short-range rocket and mortar attacks, India's system is designed to counter a far wider range of threats, including long-range ballistic and cruise missiles — reflecting the need to deter and respond to potential hostilities from both Pakistan and China across diverse terrains.
The government aims for full operational deployment of the Sudarshan Chakra by 2035.

What PM Modi said
Speaking from the Red Fort, PM Modi said, 'We have chosen the path of Lord Krishna's Sudarshan Chakra. For the security of the country and its citizens, we will continue to upgrade our capabilities. I assure you that in the next 10 years, whether it is a place of strategic importance, a civilian area, or our centres of faith, we will build a 'Rashtriya Suraksha Kavach' capable of withstanding any attack."
Referring to recent events, he added, 'We have shown the world our capabilities and proved that India is ready to face any kind of warfare. We demonstrated this in Operation Sindoor. Pakistan attacked our military bases, civilian areas, and our temples, but our air defence systems — our Sudarshan Chakra — foiled all their attacks."

PM to inaugurate projects worth ₹11,000 crore to boost Delhi's connectivity today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate two major national highway projects worth ₹11,000 crore in Rohini on Sunday. The projects — the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway — aim to decongest the Capital and improve connectivity, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta termed UER-II a 'historic gift' for the city and said that it would not only move Delhi closer to becoming traffic-free but also strengthen connectivity across the National Capital Region. Ms. Gupta inspected the venue in Rohini Sector 37, where the inauguration is scheduled to take place. She said the UER-II would reduce the travel time from the Singhu border, which connects Delhi with Haryana, to the IGI Airport from two hours to around 40 minutes. Meanwhile, the Congress hit out at the BJP-led Centre over the 'high' toll tax on the UER-II. Delhi Congress spokesperson Naresh Kumar claimed that the toll tax in Delhi is higher than in the neighbouring States of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. He demanded a reduction of toll charges by at least 50%.

Security heightened around disputed mausoleum in UPs Fatehpur

Agency: Kanpur(UP), Aug 16 (PTI) Security has been heightened around a disputed mausoleum in Fatehpur as a Hindu organisation, the Math Mandir Sanrakshan Sangharsh Samiti, on Saturday announced plans to hold a 'kirtan' (devotional singing) at the site. This move comes amidst a tense standoff following a recent incident where a mob vandalised the structure, claiming it to be a Hindu temple. Police have tightened the security arrangements around the mausoleum, with prohibitory orders in effect. The order has reportedly restricted residents from leaving their homes without a valid reason. District Magistrate Ravindra Singh and Superintendent of Police Anoop Singh personally visited the site on Saturday to review the deployment. More than 300 police personnel, two platoons of the Provincial Armed Constabulary, and Special Task Force teams have been deployed within a one-kilometer radius. The area is also under constant drone surveillance, officials said. The current situation is the result of escalating tensions that began when the Math Mandir Sanrakshan Sangharsh Samiti sent a letter on August 7 seeking permission to 'clean and beautify" the mausoleum, alleging it was a temple. Provocative social media messages have also contributed to the unrest, prompting the police to register three FIRs and maintain extra vigilance. While officials have identified around 140 suspects from video footage, no arrests have been made so far. Media access to the site has been restricted since Monday. Sarang condemns ‘I-Day Pakistan' hashtag from Youth Congress account

Khargone: State cooperative department minister and Khargone district in-charge, Vishvas Sarang, on Friday alleged that an Independence Day message on Facebook page of Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress carried a hashtag — 'Independence Day Pakistan. ' The message was apparently deleted soon after the controversy began. Talking to mediapersons after flag hoisting in Khargone, Sarang said, "Rahul Gandhi and Congress always talk as if they are Pakistan-loving people. Gandhi, who opposed Operation Sindoor and questioned surgical strike, is shining up his politics by speaking language of China and Pakistan and defames India after going abroad. The same mentality is evident from Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress hashtag." Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress social media chairman Devendra Bairagi, told TOI, "On Friday morning, the official Facebook account of Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress was hacked by anti-social elements in which objectionable posts were made. This incident was an attempt to disrupt the activities and communication of the organisation." He said, "Our IT team took immediate action and re-secured the account, and at present, the page is completely safe and is operating normally." A formal complaint in this regard has been given to the Delhi office. The cyber cell will also be informed for an in-depth investigation of this matter, he added.
