The Ukrainian army, smaller and less equipped than Russia's, has been on the defensive for months as Russian forces advance slowly but steadily.
Russia's defence ministry said its troops had taken the village of Kolodyazi in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region and the village of Vorone in the neighbouring Dnipropetrovsk region.

Kyiv and Ukrainian military analysts from the website Deepstate did not confirm the advances.
Russian troops earlier this week broke through Ukrainian lines in one part of the Donetsk region near the town of Dobropillia, close to an important road connecting key cities in the area.
Ukraine said it sent reinforcements and claimed Friday to have re-taken six villages.
"For a second consecutive day we have been successful in extremely difficult sectors in the Dobropillia and Pokrovsk directions," Zelensky said on social media on Saturday.
"The destruction of occupiers who tried to infiltrate deeper into our positions continues," he said, adding that Ukraine had also captured an "important" number of Russian POWs.
Zelensky also repeated his warnings about possible further Russian attacks "in the coming days".
"The Russian army may try to increase pressure and strikes against Ukrainian positions in order to create more favorable political circumstances for talks with global actors," he said.
Russia has pushed into Ukrainian territory for almost 3.5 years, occupying large swathes of the east and south of the country.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine, launched by Putin in February 2022, has killed thousands.
Russia launched 85 attack drones and a ballistic missile at Ukraine overnight, Kyiv said Saturday, hours after the Putin-Trump talks in Alaska.
The highly anticipated meeting in the remote US state ended with no breakthrough in halting Russia's more than three-year-long Ukraine invasion.
Ukraine's air force said Moscow had "attacked with an Iskander-M ballistic missile and 85 Shahed-type" drones, while also attacking "frontline areas" in four regions.
In its daily report, the air force said the attacks took place "on the night of August 16" and starting in the evening of August 15 -- when Putin and Trump held their negotiations.
Kyiv said its air defences shot down 61 of the drones.

New Delhi: Delhi's Nehru Place, one of the Capital's busiest commercial hubs, will soon host a new five-star luxury hotel — the first big-ticket project to take off under the Delhi Development Authority's revamped land disposal model. The allotment is expected to fetch DDA around ₹10,000 crore over the next 55 years. The auction, conducted on August 13, saw Fleur Hotels win with a bid of ₹27.19 crore per annum — nearly 50% higher than the reserve price of ₹18 crore. The fee will rise annually through the licence period, ensuring DDA a steady stream of revenue. 'This model moves away from DDA's old reliance on freehold or perpetual lease allocations, which were often unviable due to high land costs,' said a senior official. 'The focus now is on long-term annual licensing, which ensures marquee projects while keeping DDA the ultimate landowner.' The model, the official added, will also be extended to hospitality, warehousing, health, and retail projects. The Nehru Place hotel will be operated under Lemon Tree's luxury brand Aurika. Officials said it will be among Delhi's largest hotels, with over 500 rooms and suites, signature dining outlets, expansive banqueting facilities, and leisure amenities. The project will be modelled on Aurika, Mumbai SkyCity, blending 'grandeur with a distinctive Delhi flair.' For Lemon Tree Hotels, which caters to over 1.5 million guests annually across 110+ hotels in 75 cities, the Nehru Place project strengthens its presence in the Capital. 'Delhi has always been a strategic focus for us. Aurika's entry will deliver a luxury experience that's about living, not just staying – a landmark in style, comfort, and service for the region,' said Patanjali Keswani, chairman and managing director of Lemon Tree Hotels. The bidding process was managed by SBI Capital Markets Ltd., which acted as transaction advisor. Officials said the project not only bolsters DDA's revenue profile but also signals Delhi's growing appeal as a global hospitality and business hub.

Protests in Chennai over Supreme Court order on relocating stray dogs in Delhi
Animal rights activists and dog lovers took to the streets in Chennai to stage a protest on Sunday, days after the Supreme Court ordered the stray dogs in Delhi-NCR to be moved to shelters within eight weeks. Earlier, on Friday, Delhi Police registered four FIRs in connection with the protest held without prior permission on August 11 and 12 in New Delhi, reported ANI. According to the police, demonstrations were organised despite prohibitory orders imposed under Section 163 of BNS (formerly known as Section 144), which was in force due to the security measures ahead of Independence Day. "Those who refused to leave the protest sites despite repeated requests were detained. Legal action will be taken against all those found violating the law," the Delhi Police said. The court had ruled that captured animals should not be released back onto the streets. Following this, a three-judge bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and NV Anjaria reserved its order on petitions seeking a stay on the directive. The bench said it would pass an interim order after hearing arguments from all sides. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing from the side of the Delhi government, said that there is a 'loud vocal minority' opposing the order, while the 'silent suffering majority' are supporting it. He said that people eat chicken and then claim to be animal lovers. He said that children were dying and sterilisation did not stop rabies, 'even if you immunised them, that did not stop mutilation of children," Mehta added further. Meanwhile, Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the NGO, questioned whether municipal authorities had created enough shelter homes for the dogs. "Now, dogs are picked up. But the order says once they are sterilised, do not leave them out in the community," he argued, seeking a stay on the August 11 order. The bench observed that the core problem was the failure of local bodies to implement the Animal Birth Control Rules. Justice Nath remarked, "Rules and laws are framed by the Parliament, but they are not followed. Local authorities are not doing what they should be doing.' In a detailed order, the court clarifies that the August 11 decision was not taken on a "momentary impulse" but after two decades of authorities failing to address a matter directly affecting public safety.

PM Modi reviews Delhi sections of UER-2, Dwarka Expressway before inauguration
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday reviewed the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and interacted with the construction workers of both the highways, before inaugurating the projects which are worth a combined cost of nearly ₹11,000 crore. According to the Prime Minister's office, the projects have been developed under a comprehensive decongestion plan for Delhi.(ANI File Photo) The Prime Minister along with union minister of road transport and highways, Nitin Gadkari, chief minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta and chief minister of Haryana, Nayab Singh Saini reviewed the two projects. The first stretch is Alipur to Dichaon Kalan part of Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) along with new links to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat, which is built at a cost of around ₹5,580 Crores. He also inaugurated the 10.1 km long Delhi section of Dwarka Expressway, that has been developed at a cost of around ₹5,360 crore. Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II): Alipur to Dichaon Kalan stretch The Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) is aimed to ease traffic on Delhi's Inner and Outer Ring Roads and busy points like Mukarba Chowk, Dhaula Kuan, and NH-09. The 76-km Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), designed as Delhi's third Ring Road, will give direct access to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat, improve industrial connectivity, cut city traffic, and speed up goods movement in the National Capital Region, reported PTI. According to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Modi will flag off four of the five packages of UER-II, connecting Mahipalpur near IGI Airport to Alipur in North Delhi. UER-II will link to the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, starting near Akshardham temple, enabling faster routes from Haryana and Rajasthan towards Dehradun. A new 65 km highway from Tronica City to the under-construction FNG Expressway has also been approved. In future, the corridor will connect five major NCR expressways: Delhi-Dehradun, Delhi-Meerut, Noida-Greater Noida, DND-Faridabad, and Yamuna Expressways. The Delhi section of the expressway will comprise a four level interchange, with two of them constructed under the ground. Marked with an eight-lane shallow and four-lane airport tunnel, it will also usher in Multi-modal connectivity to Yashobhoomi, DMRC Blue line and Orange line, the upcoming Bijwasan railway station and the Dwarka cluster Bus Depot, ensuring a seamless commute across the national capital region. It would also cut short the travel time from Sonipat, Rohtak, Bahadurgarh and Gurugram to the Delhi airport, significantly. A 34-lane wide toll plaza will also be constructed as a part of this expressway, said a PTI report. A stretch of 5.9 km of this section from Shiv Murti intersection to the Road Under Bridge (RUB) at Dwarka Sector-21 and another stretch of 4.2 km from Dwarka Sector-21 RUB to the Delhi-Haryana Border, will be providing direct connectivity to Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II). It would also be linking the proposed 'twin tube tunnel' on NH 148AE, connecting Shiv Murti intersection to Nelson Mandela Marg. Seamless mobility across NCR According to the Prime Minister's office, the projects — the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) — have been developed under a comprehensive decongestion plan for Delhi. With the objective of smoothening connectivity, cutting short travel time, and easing traffic disruptions, these initiatives reflect Prime Minister Modi's vision of creating world-class infrastructure that enhances ease of living and ensures seamless mobility, read a statement by the PMO on Saturday.
