Scunthorpe grab extra time goal to beat Chester in final

Leader Live18-05-2025
It was 1-1 at the end of the 90 minutes in the National League North showpiece at the Attis Arena, with Connor Woods' second half penalty hauling the Blues level.
However, late in the first period of extra time, Carlton Ubaezuonu grabbed the decisive goal to seal promotion for the Iron.
In the build-up to the final, boss Calum McIntyre thanked supporters for their backing over the campaign.
In an interview on the club's X site, McIntyre said: 'An unbelievable season. So many memories, special moments and experiences along the way.
'The theme throughout between the players, the group, the supporters, the club has been that togetherness.
'The whole group is so proud to have the support that we've had throughout the campaign. At home, away, the support has been absolutely first class.'
The first effort went to Chester, with Nathan Woodthorpe shooting narrowly wide.
At the other end, Alfie Beestin was off target with his attempt for the Iron.
Dylan Mottley-Henry, who scored in the semi-final win at Kidderminster, had an acrobatic effort deflected behind, but Scunthorpe got their noses in front in the 20th minute.
Michael Kelly's curling shot struck the post and Danny Whitehall was there to tuck in the rebound from close range.
Deep in stoppage time, Woodthorpe crossed to the back post, however Mottley-Henry could not get a clean connection with his header.
Chester's 1,600-strong travelling support will have been looking for a fightback once the second half got underway.
Mottley-Henry fired over the crossbar during a bright spell for the Blues and Tom Peers' close-range volley was blocked by Will Evans.
The Blues had their equaliser in the 62nd minute when they were awarded a penalty for hand-ball. Woods tucked away the spot kick.
Scunthorpe went close to regaining the lead 13 minutes from the end, but Whitehall's attempt from a free kick clattered the post. At the other end, Peers was just off target as time ticked on.
Chester had glimpses of goal when extra time got underway.
Three minutes in, Tom Leak was denied by United keeper Ross Fitzsimons' excellent save, while Taelor O'Kane's header went over the top four minutes later.
A minute into added time at the end of the first period of extra time and Scunthorpe regained their lead, with Carlton Ubaezuonu on target.
Chester looked to battle back again and Woods fired in a 118th minute effort, but it was comfortable for Fitzsimons.

Tosin Adarabioyo injury latest ahead of West Ham vs Chelsea

Tosin Adarabioyo is expected to return to Chelsea training this week as he looks to make the matchday squad for the trip to West Ham on Friday. The Blues drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace on opening weekend, but were without Tosin after he picked up a knock in training. Enzo Maresca's side are already without Levi Colwill after he suffered an ACL injury in pre-season, and were not keen to take any risks with Tosin. However, The Standard reports that the issue is 'very minor' and that Tosin will likely return to training this week. The 27-year-old remains a doubt for Friday's fixture, though, and Maresca may well choose to stick with the pairing of Trevor Chalobah and Josh Acheampong who kept a clean sheet against Palace. Speaking about Tosin's injury after the draw with Palace, Maresca said: 'He had a physical problem. We don't know for how long [he will be out].' Tosin was expected to play an increased role this season, after Maresca hinted that the 27-year-old was the only centre-back capable of emulating Colwill's play style. 'When we build, we build with Levi in the middle,' Maresca said. 'Last year, we played 64 games and we played 64 games with Levi and Tosin [Adarabioyo]. Now Levi is out, the only one who can do that job well is Tosin. More Trending 'We have [Jorrel] Hato but he never played as the guy in the middle last season. It is not about central defenders. Yes he is a central defender, but what does he have to do? Can he do that? It is different.' Elsewhere, Wesley Fofana could also be in line for his first minutes since March on Friday after the Frenchman was an unused substitute last time out. 'Wes was on the bench but was just on the bench to be with us and the plan was for him not to get any minutes,' Maresca added. 'Now hopefully for the next one, we can use Wes for some minutes.' Linfield's Windsor Park clash with Shelbourne to go ahead on same night as Boucher Road concert

Exclusive | Linfield's crunch UEFA Conference League play-off match at Windsor Park against Shelbourne will go ahead on Thursday August 28 at 7.45pm – on the same night as the Sam Fender concert at Boucher Road Playing Fields. With around 40,000 fans expected to attend Fender's outdoor gig just a few hundred yards away and concerns over stewarding numbers for both events, the Blues, PSNI and UEFA had looked into rescheduling the all-Ireland fixture and potentially bringing it forward by a day.

Palmer can banish the Blues by setting up victory at West Ham

Chelsea's failure to score against Crystal Palace when they opened their Premier League campaign at Stamford Bridge on Sunday was slightly alarming as their £250million attackers failed to make an immediate impact. The Blues used six forwards in an attempt to unlock a resilient Eagles defence but, if Eberechi Eze had not had a goal from a 13th-minute free-kick controversially ruled out, the hosts would have tasted defeat in their first competitive match since winning last month's Club World Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain. Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Pedro Neto, Cole Palmer, Estevao Willian and Liam Delap all failed to find the back of the net and in a sport where knee-jerk reactions run riot at the drop of a hat, let alone a couple of points, it would be easy for critics and cynics to be wringing their hands in delight and despair, depending on their perspective. Fortunately for chairman Todd Boehly and Blues boss Enzo Maresca, Chelsea's next match is under the Friday night lights at the London Stadium where they face a West Ham side who were woeful when beaten 3-0 at newly promoted Sunderland on Saturday. The Hammers are already facing a long, hard winter and will be lucky to find three teams worse than them if they don't buck up their ideas. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. Any thoughts of kick-starting their campaign may have to wait until after the first of four tough London derbies in their first eight games with home matches against Tottenham and Crystal Palace and the short trip to Arsenal on the horizon. Chelsea are 7/10 with William Hill to win and 13/8 with StarSports and Bresbet that they lead HT/FT while 9/5 with William Hill their victory is by more than one goal looks a gift. The 9/2 offered by Hills, bet365, Betfred and many others is also very tempting. Who will be the first Chelsea striker off the mark this season? Well, it won't be Nicolas Jackson who is 11/8 with bet365 to join Newcastle as a replacement for Alexander Isak while Aston Villa are 4/1 with the same company, Paddy Power, Sky Bet and Betfair to take him on board. Palmer is 9/2 to break the deadlock against the Hammers and 11/8 with Betway to score at any time, with former Brighton forward Pedro 9/5 with BetMGM and Unibet to bag his first goal for Chelsea at some stage. Jannik Sinner's withdrawal from the final of the Cincinnati Open due to illness is worrying as it was just six days before the start of the US Open at Flushing Meadows on Sunday. The defending champion was trailing 5-0 to Carlos Alcaraz when he withdrew from the action, complaining he had been ill for a couple of days. The Italian should recover in time to add the last grand slam of the year to his Australian Open and Wimbledon successes and it shouldn't be forgotten he reached the final of the French Open at Roland Garros where he lost a five-set thriller with Alcaraz after leading by two. Sinner is the obvious choice to prevail in New York at 11/10 with Paddy Power, Betfair and many others while Novak Djokovic, chasing a record 25th slam success, should not be overlooked and can be backed each-way at 14/1 with Betfred. Wimbledon winner Iga Swiatek is back with a bang after a dip in form earlier this year which saw her drop to eighth in the world rankings, and she has just won the Cincinnati Open without dropping a set. That makes the 24-year-old from Poland the one to side with as she bids to win a second US Open crown and seventh slam overall and she appeals at 10/3 with StarSports. There are just 30 golfers remaining as the hunt for FedExCup glory boils down to the Tour Championship finale at East Lake. More Trending There's a new format to the tournament which closes the PGA Tour season with the rules reverting to the usual stroke-play format with the winner being the man with lowest score after 72 holes rather than the handicap system which put most of the field out of realistic contention. Scottie Scheffler is the obvious selection to win after a last-round rally clinched victory at the BMW Championship on Sunday even though he's short at 13/8 with Ladbrokes, Coral and bet365 among others. Brave punters, though, can back him to lead from start to finish at 15/2 with bet365. Value seekers should note that Ben Griffin leads our each-way brigade at 25/1 with Ladbrokes and Coral while Sam Burns is 20/1, Robert MacIntyre 25/1 and Brian Harman 55/1 with the same firms.
