JAIPUR: The appointment of four new IAS officers has triggered a major political uproar in Rajasthan. The Central Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Monday promoted four officers of the Rajasthan Administrative Services -2020 batch—Dr Nitish Sharma, Amita Sharma, Narendra Kumar Manghani, and Naresh Kumar Goyal—who have all been inducted into the IAS cadre. However, controversy erupted after it was pointed out that all the newly-promoted officers belong to the general category, with no representation from SC, ST, OBC, MBC, or minority communities. LoP Tikaram Jully and Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra launched a scathing attack on the BJP government, accusing it of sidelining social justice and ignoring eligible candidates from reserved categories. Jully called into question the intent of the BJP government: 'Why did the Rajasthan government not include any officer from Dalit, backward, tribal, or minority communities in this selection?' Meanwhile, Dotasra termed the development as 'a clear display of casteist mentality'.

Assam job panel to drop controversial question on Manipur crisis
GUWAHATI The Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) has decided to 'drop/delete/cancel' a Manipur-related controversial question in an examination conducted on August 8 to recruit agricultural development officers. In a letter to APSC Chairperson Debaraj Upadhaya on August 17, the Meitei Heritage Society (MHS) stated that question no 95 in the exam paper was malicious, disturbing, and misleading. The question was on the conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities and the role of Arambai Tenggol and Meitei Leepun, two radical groups. 'Such a one-sided portrayal is unbecoming of a Public Service Commission, whose mandate is to recruit public servants committed to fairness, impartiality, and service to the nation without prejudice,' the MHS said. The MHS expressed serious concern for 'selectively targeting one community while ignoring publicly available data on the role of Chin-Kuki militants and their civil society organisations'. It cited reports by the National Investigation Agency, Central Bureau of Investigation, and a Supreme Court-appointed committee to make a point. 'Such misrepresentation not only tarnishes the image of a community but also undermines the credibility of the Commission,' the Meitei group said, requesting the APSC to issue a clarification acknowledging the biased nature of the question and declare the objectionable question null and void, ensuring it is not used for evaluation purposes. 'After considering our representation, the APSC informed us today (Tuesday) that it has decided to drop/delete/cancel question number 95,' an MHS spokesperson said.

Assam Rifles and IIIT Manipur collaborate to enhance drone technology for defence and security

This initiative aims to bolster surveillance, reconnaissance, and logistics in light of recent attacks involving drones equipped with explosives in Manipur. The collaboration addresses the need for hi-tech warfare solutions in the region. iStock Guwahati: Assam Rifles, in collaboration with IIIT Manipur, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote drone technology for defence and security. The event on Monday was attended by Maj Gen Ravroop Singh, IG Assam Rifles (South), and the Director of IIIT Manipur, highlighting the importance of defence-academia cooperation. As part of the initiative, an Advanced Drone Training and Refresher Course was also launched for Assam Rifles personnel, covering drone flight operations, maintenance, and DGCA-certified training. The programme aims to strengthen surveillance, reconnaissance, and logistics support capabilities. Around 80 participants, including defence personnel and IIIT faculty, took part in the event, reaffirming the shared commitment to innovation and capacity building. Last year Manipur witnessed hi tech attacks, one person was killed, and six others suffered injuries in an attack by rocket propelled bombs in Moirang in rocket, believed to be improvised, landed in the compound of former chief minister Mairembam Koireng's residence. With Manipur facing attacks from drones equipped with explosives, Director General of Police Rajeev Singh has said that a committee was formed of top officers from the army, state police and paramilitary forces to examine the modus operandi of explosives dropped by drones adopted by militants in Manipur. Central agencies like NSG were roped in to study hi-tech warfare. Manipur is under President's rule. At least 258 people have been killed and over a thousand people injured in the ethnic violence in the state between the tribal Kuki-Zo and the non-tribal Meitei people since May 3, 2023. More than 60,000 people have been displaced from their homes and villages, They are staying in relief camps in different districts.
