As part of Sharjah's Guest of Honour presence at the 30th Rabat International Book and Publishing Fair (RIBF), House of Wisdom (HoW) concluded its participation with a thoughtfully curated cultural showcase highlighting the rich tradition of Islamic travelogues. Featuring rare manuscripts and exhibits, the experience celebrated the legendary journeys of Ahmad Ibn Majid and Ibn Battuta — two of the Muslim world's most renowned explorers.
The HoW booth attracted notable attention, including a visit from Sheikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority, accompanied by His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid, and Ahmed Bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of the Sharjah Book Authority. HoW Executive Director Marwa Al Aqroubi welcomed the dignitaries, offering insights into the showcased works that reflected the Arab world's enduring contributions to travelogues and maritime navigation.
The booth also welcomed distinguished guests, including Sheikh Rashid Bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Chairman of Ajman Municipality and Planning Department and Vice Chairman of Ajman University's Board of Trustees, and Aawatif Hayar, Moroccan Minister of Solidarity, Social Integration and the Family.
Rare manuscripts
House of Wisdom showcased a collection of rare manuscripts and books that highlighted the contributions of notable Arab explorers and navigators, including Ahmad Ibn Majid and Ibn Battuta. Among the exhibits was a manuscript titled 'The Verses of Ibn Majid,' a rare collection of poems, verses, and letters by Ibn Majid on maritime literature, offering significant scientific value due to its previously unpublished poetic texts.
The exhibition also featured 'Memorandum for Historians on the Innocence of Ibn Majid,' a book authored by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. The book provides documented evidence that exonerates Ibn Majid from claims that he assisted the Portuguese in reaching and occupying India.
Also on display was a rare manuscript of Ibn Battuta's 'A Masterpiece to Those Who Contemplate the Wonders of Cities and the Marvels of Traveling,' documenting his 30-year journey across 44 countries. First printed in 1933 by the Amiriya Press in Cairo, the two-volume work has been translated into Portuguese, French, English, and partially into German.
The participation further strengthens the HoW's efforts to enhance Sharjah's international cultural presence and highlight Arab and Islamic heritage through its evolving themes, including travelogues as a gateway to understanding civilisations and fostering cultural dialogue.
A bridge of cultural and intellectual exchange
Marwa Al Aqroubi said: 'Morocco is a timeless crossroads of Arab-Islamic heritage — a living bridge of culture and thought. At RIBF, House of Wisdom continues this dialogue, uniting shared values beyond borders.'
She added: 'Sharjah's designation as UNESCO World Book Capital in 2019 marked a turning point in championing knowledge, embodied in the founding of House of Wisdom. With Rabat stepping into the same role in 2026, our cultural ties grow even stronger, reflecting the enduring commitment of the UAE and Morocco to champion culture and preserve our shared human heritage.'
The HoW booth hosted a session titled 'Chapters of Islamic Art: Travelogues – Exploring the Legacy of Ahmad ibn Majid and Ibn Battuta.' The session highlighted the lasting impact of Islamic travelogues, with insights from Dr Abdulaziz Al Musallam, Chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, and Sheikha Al Mutairi, Head of National Culture and Documents at Juma Al Majid Center. They discussed the motivations behind Muslim travels and the crucial contributions of Ibn Majid and Ibn Battuta in documenting their journeys.
Additionally, HoW showcased its flagship initiatives, including the second edition of 'Chapters of Islamic Art,' currently running in Sharjah until 5 July with the theme 'Travelogues.' The exhibition features the origins of geographic documentation, Idrisi's medieval maps, ancient navigation tools, and rare manuscripts and books. Visitors to the RIBF were also invited to experience the exhibition through an immersive, interactive virtual tour.

Philippines, a top wellness haven for Mideast travellers

Medical and wellness tourism, anchored on the provision and delivery of holistic approaches against chronic diseases, have improved in the Philippines, according to a Florida-based non-profit research organisation. According to the Philippines' Department of Tourism (DoT), in a consequent email interview, initiatives such as overseas presence of the tropical country as a prime medical and wellness tourism destination shall continue. For the first time, it was in April 2024, when the DoT led a public-private delegation, consisting of hospital-dental-wellness facilities and health tourism facilitator for the 'health sales mission' to the UAE (Abu Dhabi and Dubai) and Saudi Arabia (Riyadh). DoT-Office of Product and Market Development director Dr Paulo Benito Tugbang, physician/nurse/midwife, who used to be responsible for the Department of Health-Medical Travel and Wellness Tourism Programme as well as former Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases member, then said that the purpose was to encourage Middle East travel trade professionals consider the medical and wellness offerings of the Philippines, inasmuch as Filipino healthcare workers have been admired for their dedication and commitment. Again, with the purpose of capturing the Arab Market, known for their 'culture of medical travel,' DoT partnered with the Dubai-based Agora Group management firm for the Philippine participation at the June 2023 '1st International Health and Wellness Tourism Congress in Dusseldorf, Germany. This was followed by the October 2024 Philippine-hosting of the second edition of the international event in Taguig City, Metro Manila. Moreover, DoT signed a five-year deal with Thailand, internationally recognised for its medical tourism portfolio in January 2025, covering the areas of tourism cooperation, exchange of best practices, and human resources development. It participated in the May 2024 International Wellness Tourism Expo in Tokyo, Japan. It also had embarked on other 'strategic activities' in Singapore and Malaysia 'with potential industry partners' so that the Philippines would be in 'the radar of regional and international community.' These, as encapsulated in the National Tourism Development Plan 2022-2028 of the Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Administration, shall be the continuous enhancement of healthcare accessibility, promotion of sustainable tourism practices, and delivery of world-class experiences, for the locals and foreign visitors alike. It was a fortnight back when Gulf Today received a press release concerning 'The Global Wellness Economy: The Philippines.' The assessment revealed that 'the country's wellness market' with 11 sectors responsible for the delivery of products and services for one's health and wellness had expanded 21 per cent from $35.8 billion to $43.3 billion between 2019 and 2023. The press release quoted chairperson and chief executive officer Susie Ellis, of the Global Wellness Institute (GWI), into the awareness and education campaign for the necessary lifestyle changes against non-communicable diseases prevalent worldwide: 'The Philippines has a thriving wellness economy, and we are thrilled that its DoT has continued their partnership with us for this deep dive into the data that really showcase where the growth and potential lies.' 'Blessed with natural wonders, the Philippines is an ideal destination for nature-based wellness and relaxation, and the authentic Filipino wellness offerings mean that the country has something truly unique to share with the world,' Ellis also said. In the country assessment and compared with 217 countries and territories, GWI had quantified, that from 2022 to 2023 alone, six of 11 health and wellness economy sectors in the Philippines posted double digit annual growth rates relative to the global market size served. From 10.2 % in the mental wellness: services, therapies, resources to 61.4 % in wellness tourism: enriching travel for personal well-being. In between were the sectors of public health, prevention and preventive medicine (13.3 %), wellness real estate/health and wellness living spaces (14.0 %), thermal/mineral springs (15.3 %) and spas (19.2 %). Overall, GWI concluded that in terms of health and wellness tourism in 2023, the Philippines ranked eighth among 45 in the Asia-Pacific Region, and 23rd of 218 worldwide: 'The wellness industry is a major contributor to the Philippines' overall economy contributing 9.9 % to the gross domestic product in 2023; 12th worldwide.'

Amman International Film Festival announces details of sixth edition

This year, the festival welcomes Ireland as Country of Honour, focusing on Irish cinema with a specific section dedicated to it. The Amman International Film Festival – Awal Film has announced the details of its sixth edition, set to take place from July 2 to July 10 in Jordan's capital. This year's theme, 'A World Unscripted,' celebrates the raw, unpredictable nature of storytelling that mirrors the unscripted nature of real life. Festival President Princess Rym Ali explained that the theme reflects a commitment to showcasing films that defy convention and embrace the authenticity of lived experience. 'This edition embraces the unpredictable and the deeply human in the midst of a volatile and rapidly changing world,' she stated. 'Life doesn't follow a script; and recent years have certainly been unscripted. So, in this edition, we pay tribute to storytellers who dare to explore and narrate moments that feel more lived than written.' The festival's official poster, designed by HUE Innovation & Design, captures this spirit with a visual style that introduces both a playful tone and a subtle message of hope, reinforcing the core message of spontaneity and resilience. This year also marks a significant milestone for the festival with the introduction of its first-ever 'Country of Honour.' Ireland has been selected for this role, with a dedicated spotlight on Irish cinema featured in the programme. Festival Director Nada Doumani highlighted the thematic synergy between Irish and Arab films, noting that both cultures use cinema to explore identity, resilience, and the path toward peace. She emphasised that within the framework of 'A World Unscripted,' Irish and Arab stories find common ground in their exploration of human experience. Doumani also pointed to Ireland's principled stance and strong support for Palestine and human rights, which further resonates with the region and the spirit of this year's edition. Irish Ambassador to Jordan, Marianne Bolger, added: 'I am exceptionally proud that Ireland has been selected as the Festival's first Country of Honour, and I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the President of the Festival and its organisers. Ireland has a long history in cinema and filmmaking, and we are delighted to work closely with the AIFF to bring a collection of Irish films to Jordan that will hopefully resonate with audiences. I believe each Irish film on display will speak, in its own way, to the theme of 'A World Unscripted', and I look forward to seeing how these movies are perceived by Jordanian viewers.'
