2 Rare Red Pandas Born at Montana Zoo — Here's When the Public Will Be Able to See Them

The zoo said public viewing of the cubs may begin once they reach 3 months of ageNEED TO KNOW Two red pandas were born at ZooMontana on June 25, the Billings-based zoo recently announced at its annual fundraiser on Aug. 1 The cubs, now 6 weeks old, are opening their eyes and developing their signature red and black coats The zoo said public viewing of the cubs may begin once they reach 3 months of ageZooMontana has double the reasons to celebrate! The Billings-based zoo welcomed two new red pandas on June 25. The establishment announced the exciting news at its annual fundraiser on Aug. 1. "If you're wondering what you missed at last night's A Wild Affair, we'd tell you it was just your typical night ... but we'd be lying," the zoo wrote on Instagram. "Last night we made what might be our biggest announcement in a while — Pabu and Pavitra have welcomed their very first cubs!" The zoo went on to share that the two cubs, now 6 weeks old, are developing their signature red and black coats and opening their eyes. Red pandas are born completely blind and use a high-pitched whistle sound to communicate with their mother until their sight develops. "The cubs will remain in their den until Pavitra feels comfortable allowing them to explore — likely around three months of age. Public viewing may begin at that time, but we will continue to share updates as they grow," the zoo added. The Instagram post featured photos of each of the tiny cubs being held by a zoo worker, along with a snapshot of the proud parents. According to the zoo's website, 5-year-old Pabu was born at the Oregon Zoo in June 2020 and later moved to ZooMontana with his mother, Mei Mei, in March 2021. He is popular with visitors and has been given the nicknames 'The Prince of Pounce' and 'Prince of Rascality." Two-year-old Pavitra was born at the San Diego Zoo in June 2023, and brought to ZooMontana as a partner for Pabu in 2024. The zoo said she is known for her "strong personality" and penchant for climbing. ZooMontana was home to another red panda, a male named Duli. However, the animal sadly had to be euthanized, just days after his 14th birthday last month "due to age-related complications and quality of life concerns, the zoo announced on Instagram on July 15. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), red pandas are an endangered species, with fewer than 10,000 remaining in the wild. Their population continues to be under threat from poachers and deforestation. Read the original article on People

Tom Hanks Pays Tribute to ‘Apollo 13' Astronaut Jim Lovell: ‘God Speed You, on This Next Voyage'

Tom Hanks paid tribute to Jim Lovell, the astronaut he portrayed in Apollo 13, following news of Lovell's death Friday at the age of 97. 'There are people who dare, who dream, and who lead others to the places we would not go on our own. Jim Lovell, who for a long while had gone farther into space and for longer than any other person of our planet, was that kind of guy,' Hanks wrote on social media. More from Rolling Stone Trump Super PAC Raises $200 Million From Elon Musk and People Who Want Stuff From Him Man Afraid to Ride Subway Named Head of NASA Wes Anderson's 'The Phoenician Scheme' Is One of His Best 'His many voyages around Earth and on to so-very-close to the moon were not made for riches or celebrity, but because such challenges as those are what fuels the course of being alive – and who better than Jim Lovell to make those voyages.' Lovell, who was among the first astronauts to orbit the Moon as part of the Apollo 8 mission in 1968, was immortalized on the big screen in director Ron Howard's Best Picture Oscar-nominated 1995 film Apollo 13, which retold the story of the ship's aborted 1970 lunar mission and how Lovell — as the mission commander, played by Hanks —and his crew made their way back to Earth after an oxygen tank explosion disabled their electrical and life support systems. NASA also paid tribute to Lovell, 'whose life and work inspired millions of people across the decades. Jim's character and steadfast courage helped our nation reach the Moon and turned a potential tragedy into a success from which we learned an enormous amount.' 'From a pair of pioneering Gemini missions to the successes of Apollo, Jim helped our nation forge a historic path in space that carries us forward to upcoming Artemis missions to the Moon and beyond,' NASA's statement added. 'As the Command Module Pilot for Apollo 8, Jim and his crewmates became the first to lift off on a Saturn V rocket and orbit the Moon, proving that the lunar landing was within our reach. As commander of the Apollo 13 mission, his calm strength under pressure helped return the crew safely to Earth and demonstrated the quick thinking and innovation that informed future NASA missions. Hanks' tribute concluded Friday, 'On this night of a full Moon, he passes on – to the heavens, to the cosmos, to the stars. God speed you, on this next voyage, Jim Lovell.' A New ‘Final Destination' Is Already in the Works

After the success of Final Destination Bloodlines, New Line is now on track to dole out more horrible ways to die in another upcoming installment. People can't seem to get enough as Bloodlines grossed $286 million at its global box office, with a domestic tally of $138.1 million. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Lori Evans Taylor, co-writer of the recent rebootquel, has been hired to write the script to continue Death's serial killing spree. Bloodlines was co-written by Guy Busick (Ready or Not) based on a story concept from Taylor, Busick, and Jon Watts (Spider-Man: Homecoming) with Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein directing the film. No word yet if the duo will return to helm the follow-up for New Line Cinema. Final Destination Bloodlines marked series star Tony Todd's final bow as Death's ever-present herald. Critics hailed his performance; io9's own Germain Lussier wrote, 'The icing on the cake is the inclusion of Tony Todd, one of the franchise's original characters who returns here in what's not just an emotional fitting send-off (Todd passed away in November of last year), but in a way that gives his character the context and clarity he's been lacking throughout. Through his role and a few other narrative choices, Bloodlines also becomes the most crucial chapter yet in terms of franchise lore.' The obvious next question—can a seventh Final Destination film top the achievement of Bloodlines?—begs another one: which seemingly ordinary scenarios will become creative death traps this time around?
