This Women's Month, inDrive is shining a spotlight on the women who often work quietly but tirelessly to hold South African families and communities together – our gogos. These grandmothers, caregivers, and community leaders are more than just matriarchs; they are protectors, teachers, and providers. Yet, despite their critical role, many remain excluded from the digital and mobility tools that could make their daily lives safer and more independent.
Ride-hailing platform inDrive, in partnership with grassroots initiative goGOGOgo, has launched a new community-driven initiative aimed at bridging South Africa's digital and mobility divide. The project kicks off with empowering older women (locally known as gogos) from Alexandra and surrounding communities to gain valuable, relevant digital and mobility literacy skills aimed at helping them navigate everyday life.
The event, held at Safe-Hub Alexandra on 29 July 2025, brought gogos together for a hands-on session to learn everything from smartphone navigation to ride-hailing basics via the inDrive app, skills most had never used before. This training comes amid a national reality where around four million children are being raised by grandmothers and often on a single state grant, underlining just how critical it is to equip them with tools for independence and safety.

'Gogos are the unsung heroes and clearly the backbone of our nation, and empowering them with digital and mobility skills helps to remove barriers to their movement, safety and independence,' says Ashif Black, country representative for inDrive South Africa. 'We're proud to support this initiative and to begin building skills in communities that have real impact.'
Tackling transport and tech exclusion
According to Stats SA, just 44.3% of South Africans aged 60 and older have internet access, a number that reflects a broader pattern of digital exclusion for older generations, particularly women. Mobility is another challenge, where public transport is often unsafe, inaccessible or unreliable for older users, leaving many gogos isolated or dependent on others for basic errands like grocery shopping, medical visits or collecting social grants.
'In almost every township we operate in, gogos are the ones holding families together. That being said, they're also the ones left out when services and tech aren't designed with them in mind,' says Jane Simmonds, founder and executive director of goGOGOgo. 'This partnership gives them tools to engage on their own terms.'

inDrive's peer-to-peer model, which allows riders and drivers to negotiate a fare and choose a preferable car and driver for the trip, offers a more flexible and approachable option for users who may be new to ride-hailing or prefer direct engagement. At the event, each gogo was supported by a trained inDrive driver, with 'Gogo Champions' helping them download the app, practice booking a demo ride and understand how to stay safe when travelling.
The gogos also received starter kits, which included smartphones for some, branded blankets, and handmade bags crafted by fellow gogos as part of local income-generating activities supported by inDrive. The kits also contained comfort items to support the gogos as they continue engaging with technology and transport services.
Building a movement
This activation is the first in a planned series of empowerment days aimed at supporting older women through technology and mobility training. inDrive and goGOGOgo will host additional sessions later this year, using feedback gathered from interviews with participants to refine and expand the programme.
'As we continue to grow in South Africa, we want to make sure we're growing responsibly and in a way that reflects the needs and realities of our communities,' says Black.

How Rosebank Mall is paying less for electricity and fighting outages

A new hybrid energy system to power Rosebank mall An innovative sustainable energy management system was unveiled at Rosebank Mall this week, giving South Africans a glimpse of how to cut costs and keep the lights on in a city plagued by power outages. A first of its kind The newly unveiled energy project at Rosebank Mall is the first of its kind in South Africa. Multiple components have been incorporated into a microgrid, which not only allows for the mall to be fully operational during load shedding but also maximises cost savings. It does this by purchasing energy at lower off-peak rates and utilising it during peak times through energy arbitrage. This provides Rosebank Mall with more energy independence than your average commercial space. Just the batteries can power up the whole mall for two hours. When incorporating the generators, the durations expand. The generators used in this system were upgraded to blend natural gas with diesel. This reduces fuel consumption by more than 50% cutting fuel costs as well. Strategic perspective Wally Webber of Utenergy said the project shows that sustainability and energy returns don't have to be opposites. National utilities manager of Hyprop, Jacques Vosloo, excitedly said, 'Today we're not just switching on a power system, we're unveiling a bold new way of managing energy in a retail environment'. He further emphasised how this project is one of the largest of its kind in South Africa. It promises to deliver not only financial returns and savings but also provide their tenants with the certainty that they will be able to trade uninterrupted, regardless of what the grid is doing. The general manager of Rosebank Mall, Muhammad Varachia, said it is a turning point in South African retail infrastructure. 'What we've activated here in Rosebank Mall is what we believe to be the largest hybrid system in the retail sector. It features a 7.2 megawatt power battery, a 4.5 megawatt inverter and a dual fuel generator. All seamlessly managed by smart controls that optimise everything in real time.' Varachia indicated that it's not just about the hardware but what it delivers. Amongst others, resilience and relief were the qualities he attached to the system. ALSO READ: Eskom adds more power to electricity grid as G20 summit approaches From blueprint to breakthrough One of the leading contractors, Energenic, described how this project was about doing something that had never been done before on the continent. Director Robert Eustace further explained that 'it was about proving a new way of thinking about energy. 'It's not just another generator installation, a standard solar battery fit-out, it was a custom-built techno-economic energy project.' This power plant is set to be a huge change-maker for the operation of the mall. 'Yes, it's green. Yes, it's resilient. But most importantly, it makes financial sense. This system actively reduces operating costs,' he said. Anthony English, chief director of lithium battery manufacturer Freedom Won, was also in attendance. He explained that the only challenge they faced was the timeline. 'From when they placed the order to when we had to deliver was only about eight weeks. To prepare the whole pipeline and all the components, get them into the production line, quality control, testing and then deliver them and install. It was a challenging project but ultimately very successful.' Energy utility Darius Booyens of Egoli Gas described the launch as a milestone for what's happening in the energy market. 'It is not just about supplying gas; there's a bigger picture that supports a greener future. 'The gas power allows us to reduce the carbon emissions significantly, and it is a solution that enables energy to be generated on demand. It also reduces carbon emissions and contributes to both resilience and energy support.' The system also uses AI-enabled technology to monitor and detect anomalies such as leaks and interference by third parties.

Ford Everest and Ranger sharpen up with new styling packs

South Africans love customising their vehicles and Ford SA has introduced eye-catching accessory packs for two of its popular models — the Everest Sport and the Ranger XLT. 'The accessory market is huge, allowing customers to personalise their vehicles according to their unique styling and lifestyle requirements. We have introduced styling accessory packs to enable Everest Sport and Ranger XLT customers to give their vehicles an even bolder appearance while guaranteeing the highest level of quality and performance,' says Sunil Sewmohan, Ford SA executive director of product marketing. The styling packs comprise genuine Ford accessories and official licensed add-ons that will be available from the second half of August as dealer fitment options before the delivery of a new vehicle. The accessory packs are covered by Ford's standard four-year/120,000km new vehicle warranty. Customers that already own a current-generation Everest Sport or Ranger XLT, or purchase a second-hand vehicle of the same derivative, can also have the accessories fitted at a Ford dealer, with the parts covered by a two-year/unlimited distance parts warranty.

SA car parts group Jendamark braces for US tariff hit

South African car parts manufacturer Jendamark Automation stands to lose R750m of contracts in a US market it has built up to account for 50% of its exports, its operations director told Reuters. The 40-year-old company based in Gqeberha builds automated assembly lines for catalytic converters, engines and axles for automotive customers such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz among others. But like global carmakers and suppliers far and wide, they have been hit hard by US tariffs. 'As it stands now, we've got about R750m of deals with our American customers that (we're) at risk of losing,' Siegfried Lokotsch said. 'I don't know if they're going to still buy the lines from us. We thought we were going to get the orders, we were in a good position ... In my mind, they're gone (the contracts) because they've (the tariffs) just gone up.' About 85% of Jendamark's business in South Africa is for export, with 50% of that to the US, where it also has an office. Jendamark is looking for new contracts in other markets, such as Saudi Arabia, but the company has its work cut out to replace the US business it expects to lose. 'To find a new market and to understand how they operate in the country and where the opportunities are is not something that just happens overnight,' he said.
