DHS, league partnerships protect fans from buying fake sports merchandise
An old sports maxim states that 'defense wins championships.' The same can be said for the fight against counterfeit sports memorabilia. A unit of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), The National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center (IPR Center), has been running Operation Team Player since 2013. As of early 2025, the task force has seized more than $455 million in counterfeit sports merchandise and apparel, making it the largest anti-counterfeiting initiative within the federal government. A prime example of the IPR Center's efforts was announced prior to Super Bowl LIX. The yearlong collaborative operation, which also involved Customs and Border Patrol, HSI and the New Orleans Police Department, seized more than 214,507 counterfeit items including jerseys, T-shirts, hats, jewelry and other memorabilia valued at more than $39.5 million. In a statement addressing the multiagency collaboration, NFL Senior Vice President for Legal Affairs Dolores F. DiBella said: 'The continued success of Operation Team Player would not be possible without their tireless efforts and ongoing commitment to protecting NFL fans from counterfeit crimes both on the ground and online.' At its inception, the NFL was Operation Team Player's primary league partner, says Bill Hardy, IPR Center's national program manager for Operation Team Player and Operation Surge Protector, which protects consumers from counterfeit computers and other electronic devices. Since then, 'We've expanded to all of the sports leagues,' he says. 'We work with MLB, NHL, the NCAA and others regularly and also with manufacturers, like Nike, Puma (and) Adidas.' Hardy explains that the rise of e-commerce has made selling counterfeit items much easier. Criminals can launch websites and online stores, close them quickly, and open new ones on different platforms. And sports merchandise fraudsters act very quickly. When international soccer superstar Lionel Messi signed with Major League Soccer's Inter Miami in 2023, he says, 'Only two weeks later we saw new counterfeit shirts — before Adidas could produce the officially sanctioned shirts.' Compared to official sports merchandise, counterfeit T-shirts and other apparel are nearly always of inferior quality and craftsmanship — a sleeve that's too short, fabric that shrinks when washed or dyes that cause designs to fade — resulting in disappointed buyers. But the damage from unknowingly purchasing counterfeit sports apparel and merchandise doesn't end with money lost on an inferior item. Hardy notes that providing credit card information online or in person to unverified retailers who could be engaged in counterfeiting exposes consumers to an even more serious crime: identity theft. The volume of counterfeit merchandise tends to rise during periods of high interest, such as league championships. 'We'll see an uptick of seizures then or at the beginning of the season or after a change to a team's uniforms,' Hardy says, but 'trying to protect consumers from fraud is a year-around effort.' Sports fans who want to purchase official, high-quality apparel and items that celebrate their favorite teams and players can protect themselves in several ways, according to the IPR Center:Be wary of buying online from unfamiliar sites or temporary pop-up stores. Buy team apparel and items only from a team's website or authorized retailers. Don't be swayed by advertising or packaging that looks professional. Counterfeiters can easily copy merchandise photos and videos from legitimate sites and print labels and packaging that are nearly identical to what is used on legitimate merchandise. If you're buying in person, look for mismatched markings, broken threads and missing buttons or snaps — clues that the items may be counterfeit. Keep a record of credit card purchases and compare them to your bank statements. If you find a discrepancy, contact your bank immediately. The general public should be aware of the pervasiveness of fraudulent sports memorabilia, Hardy says. 'Anything with a profit margin is going to be counterfeited.' He also cites another adage that sports merchandise consumers should remember when they are tempted by abnormally low prices: 'If it's too good to be true, it probably is.'
