Warner Bros. Discovery splitting into two separate media companies – separating CNN from HBO Max

Warner Bros. Discovery announced on Monday morning that it was splitting into two separate public companies by the middle of next year, in yet another major upheaval of a media conglomerate as the industry looks to transition from cable subscriptions to streaming.
One company will focus on the HBO Max streaming product and WBD's film studios, while the other will be a global networks brand that will largely include cable channels such as CNN, TNT and Discovery, as well as some streaming options.
Current Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav will oversee the streaming and studios business. Gunnar Wiedenfels, CFO of WBD, will head up the global networks company. Both will remain in their current roles until the separation, which is slated to take place in mid-2026.
'The cultural significance of this great company and the impactful stories it has brought to life for more than a century have touched countless people all over the world. It's a treasured legacy we will proudly continue in this next chapter of our celebrated history,' Zaslav stated in a press release. 'By operating as two distinct and optimized companies in the future, we are empowering these iconic brands with the sharper focus and strategic flexibility they need to compete most effectively in today's evolving media landscape.'
'This separation will invigorate each company by enabling them to leverage their strengths and specific financial profiles. This will also allow each company to pursue important investment opportunities and drive shareholder value,' Wiedenfels added. 'At Global Networks, we will focus on further identifying innovative ways to work with distribution partners to create value for both linear and streaming viewers globally while maximizing our network assets and driving free cash flow.'
The move is similar in scope and style to Comcast's announcement last year that it was spinning off the majority of its cable assets into a separate standalone business. That publicly traded company, now known as Versant, comprises NBC Universal's cable news channels MSNBC and CNBC, along with several other networks. That move sparked speculation that other media giants would also look to consolidate and restructure, especially as cord-cutting continues to hamper the cable business.
The company seemed to hint at the upcoming split late last year when it announced a restructuring plan that would move its linear networks and streaming units into separate divisions. At the time, WBD said the new global linear networks division would be home to its news, sports, scripted and unscripted programming networks, which include TNT, CNN, HGTV, TBS and the Food Network. The streaming and studios division would house HBO Max and the company's film studios.
Since the Warner Bros. Discovery merger was finalized in 2022, Zaslaz has devoted much of his energy to shedding much of the company's massive debt load, which has seen him cut $21 billion in the past three years. All of that slashing and cutting, however, has made Zaslav a somewhat unpopular figure among the rank-and-file at the company, especially at networks such as CNN, which have taken on the brunt of Zaslav's penny-pinching.
He's also overseen some moves that have led many to question his credibility. There was the embarrassing rebrand of HBO Max to just MAX, which the company finally decided to undo earlier this year. WBD also lost its media rights to the NBA, once the crown jewel of TNT Sports. His accounting methods, which have included shelving already finished films, have resulted in Warner Bros. Discovery alienating much of Hollywood.
Meanwhile, Zaslav and Wiedenfels came under additional scrutiny and criticism earlier this month during the annual shareholders' meeting. With the share price down for the year at the time of the meeting, shareholders overwhelmingly voted to reject the company's 2024 executive pay package, which was seen as a direct rebuke of Zaslav's exorbitant salary north of $50 million a year.
The vote, however, was non-binding, but it sent a clear message to the C-suite.

A defense lawyer for hip-hop entrepreneur Sean 'Diddy' Combs had his ex-girlfriend read aloud a slew of loving text messages she'd sent him over the past few years until she broke down in tears Wednesday on the witness stand. The second day of cross-examination by attorney Teny Geragos seemed aimed at supporting the defense position that the woman, who testified under the pseudonym ' Jane,' was a willing participant in the sometimes-weekly sex with male sex workers that Combs directed and watched for hours. Geragos and Jane read aloud dozens of text messages exchanged during a relationship that stretched from 2021 until Combs was arrested last September. At one point, Jane read a text saying she had 'never had a man take care of me like you do' and professing her unending love for the entertainment icon — before Jane stopped reading and began sniffling, then dabbed tears from her eyes with a tissue. After prosecutors objected and requested a sidebar conversation with the judge away from the jury, Jane sat slumped in the witness chair, hair hanging over one side of her face. At the defense table, Combs was quietly reading from one of the TV monitors in front of him. It was the fifth day of testimony for Jane, who has said she still loves Combs. She previously discussed gaining insight into her relationship with Combs after three months of therapy. Jane also said she never wanted to have sex with any man except Combs but did so to please him. At other points on Wednesday, Geragos elicited from Jane that she frequently became angry at Combs and wanted to end their relationship because she got upset that he was treating other girlfriends better. In one instance, Jane acknowledged, the Bad Boy Records founder even bought another girlfriend jewelry that was a matching set to jewelry he had given Jane. Prosecutors say they charged Combs with sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy because he used threats, drugs and violence to force women into unwelcome sexual experiences and used his employees and associates to help him get what he wanted. Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he faces 15 years to life in prison. The testimony Wednesday came during a shortened day in the courtroom that began in the afternoon. Geragos said she expected to finish her cross-examination Thursday morning. Assistant U.S. Attorney Maurene Comey, who is leading the prosecution, said the government expects to rest its case as early as next Wednesday. Defense attorney Marc Agnifilo would not outline what will occur when the defense gets its turn to call witnesses, saying that will depend on which witnesses the government still calls to the stand, but he said he was confident the trial will end by July Fourth.

LSU basketball star Flau'jae Johnson has revealed she is no longer friends with former teammate Angel Reese because of a 'locker room' dispute between the pair. Johnson and Reese formed a successful partnership on the court together at LSU, which helped the school win a national championship in 2023, before the latter left college and moved up to the WNBA a year later. At the end of her rookie season in the big leagues, the Chicago Sky forward admitted she is no longer as close with her old Tigers teammate despite there being 'no hard feelings between them.' 'I still support Flau'jae. We aren't as close as we used to be,' Reese said on her Unapologetically Angel podcast. 'There's no hard feelings or anything. 'It happens,' she continued. 'You don't have the best relationships with everybody, and don't always continue relationships with people. So I wish her the best always, I'm always going to support her. There's no love lost but we aren't as close as we used to be.' Yet nine months on from that claim, Johnson has suggested their lack of closeness these days is actually due to something that played out behind the scenes at LSU. 'We're not friends, but I mean that bond that we had, that thing that we did together, winning a national championship, you can never take that away from us,' she said on The Breakfast Club. 'And so sometimes stuff happens, you wish it don't happen but it do. And you just gotta grow.' When asked specifically what happened, the 21-year-old continued: 'Yeah, it was a lot of media, it was a lot of locker room stuff. You know what I'm saying? Stuff that go on behind the scenes. 'But it happens. It happens… Sometimes stuff happens. You wish it don't happen, but it do.' Back in 2023, Reese's mother, Angel Webb Reese, and Johnson's mother, Kia Brooks, seemed to feud on social media after the former was briefly removed from LSU's lineup. Webb first posted on Instagram: 'Folks pls do not send me long text msgs with a bunch of grammatical errors it gives me a headache, how do I know you said what you said if I can't understand what you're saying?' Brooks seemed to take that message as a shot at her, before going on the offensive against Webb and her daughter. 'You definitely know about grammar errors when your daughter got a 2.0 or less GPA, and in fact when writing your smart message you didn't capitalize nor did you use any periods,' she said. 'Stop being petty, fake and hateful. And take responsibility for you and your daughters actions. Your just as responsible you raised her that way. Nobody give a damn who you think you are since you came up off another's brand. Just like God gave it to you he will take right away. Always stay humble and never forget who made you and where you came from!!' Reese then continued to stoke the fire after graduating from LSU the following year. 'So now what? what was said? oh okay that's what i thought. I graduated from THE LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY IN 4 YEARS ON TIME. I thought somebody without a college degree said sum,' she wrote on X. She also shared a message from her mother on social media, in which Webb said she had a college degree and railed against 'folks who... have not sniffed a GPA since high school,' in an apparent reference to Brooks.

Aldi is cutting prices on hundreds of items to help consumers deal with ‘sticker shock' in the rest of the world

Aldi is slashing prices on more than 400 items, aiming to ease consumer concerns over rising grocery bills. The discount grocer announced efforts Tuesday to help its customers across its 2,400 US stores save over $100 million over the summer months. From now until Labor Day, shoppers can expect lower prices on about 25% of its products, including grilling meats, organic produce, pantry items, and other popular summer items. 'Our customers count on Aldi for the lowest prices of any national grocer, every day, and we never take that trust for granted,' Jason Hart, Aldi CEO, said in a news release. 'While customers may see higher prices at other retailers, we're working hard to unlock even more value for our shoppers, just in time for summer's lineup of holidays and gatherings where food takes center stage. It's another way we're doubling down on our commitment to help shoppers fill their carts with great products for less.' The lowered prices come after the Department of Agriculture announced it expects grocery prices to rise by at least 3.3 percent this year. There have been fears of higher prices in the wake of President Donald Trump's 'Liberation Day' announcement of tariffs on goods from most countries around the world earlier this year, and the changing rates and policies since then. 'We want to do what we can to help shoppers,' Scott Patton, Aldi's chief commercial officer, said in a news release. 'Value isn't a trend at Aldi. It's been in our DNA since we opened our first store nearly 50 years ago.' In February, Aldi announced plans to open over 225 new US stores in 2025, aiming for 800 new locations by 2028 as part of a five-year growth strategy. There are currently over 2,500 Aldi stores in the US.
