KL cops classify Cheras double shooting as murder, appeal for witnesses
KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 — Police have classified the shooting of two men outside a shopping mall along Jalan Loke Yew in Cheras shortly after midnight as murder.
Deputy Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said the investigation is ongoing, with efforts underway to determine the motive and identify the suspects.
'The case is being probed under Section 302 of the Penal Code,' he said in a media statement.
The victims, both local men in their 40s, died at the scene after a group of men in ski masks opened fire from inside a vehicle.
Police called on members of the public with information to come forward by contacting the Cheras police hotline at 03-9284 5050 / 5051 or the Kuala Lumpur police hotline at 03-2115 9999.

(Suhakam pic) PETALING JAYA : An NGO has urged the government to extend the tenure of Suhakam commissioner Mariati Robert, who is on a panel investigating alleged human rights violations at Taiping prison. Malaysians Against Death Penalty and Torture (Madpet) pointed out that the first phase of Suhakam's inquiry had just ended on June 12, and the second phase will be held from June 23 to 26. However, it said Mariati's term as Suhakam commissioner expires on June 22, alongside those of fellow office-holders Noor Aziah Awal, Nordin Ibrahim, K Ragunath, Chew Chee Ming, Hasnal Rezua Merican Habib Merican and Nazira Abdul Rahim. Noor Aziah is serving her second and final term as a Suhakam commissioner while the rest, including Mariati, are eligible to be appointed for a second term. 'Given that Mariati's term ends soon, the public inquiry is at risk if she is not reappointed for another three-year term. 'If not, the public inquiry may have to start again, as all three commissioners on the panel need to hear and consider all evidence and make a decision independently,' Madpet said in a statement. The other two on the panel investigating the incident at Taiping prison, which is said to have led to the death of one inmate and injury to several others, are Suhakam chairman Hishamudin Yunus and commissioner Farah Nini Dusuki. Madpet urged Putrajaya not to extend the tenures of Hasnal and Nazira, citing their roles as active members and leaders in Umno. Hasnal is the Selayang Umno chief while Nazira heads the women's wing of the Kulim Umno division. The NGO also suggested that the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia Act be amended so that a Suhakam commissioner's term of office is raised from three years to six, with no provision for reappointment or term extension. 'This will strengthen the independence of Suhakam commissioners, who are expected to act without fear or favour for human rights. They should not be afraid of angering the prime minister or the government of the day,' it said. It also said the role of the prime minister and government in the appointment of Suhakam commissioners should be removed and allocated instead to Parliament or another independent body.

Melaka local authority director arrested over alleged misuse of RM50mil

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The director of the finance department of a local authority in Melaka has been arrested on suspicion of abusing his power by using RM50 million of the authority's funds to invest in shares. He is believed to have committed the offence between 2020 and 2023 by appointing his wife, who works at a bank, as the investment agent for share investments amounting to nearly RM50 million. Bernama reported a source as saying that a preliminary investigation suggested that the suspect may have used public and trust funds without the necessary approval. According to the source, the man, in his 50s, was detained at about 1pm today when he provided a statement at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office in Melaka. Melaka MACC director Adi Supian Shafie confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009. He said the suspect would be brought to the Ayer Keroh magistrates' court in Melaka tomorrow to be remanded.

Court grants bail to woman charged with murdering UiTM students
Norizan Ismail faces three charges of murder in connection with the deaths of UiTM Dungun students Akmal Tukirim, Ku Adib Aizad Ku Azmi, and Khairil Anuar Jamaluddin. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Kuala Terengganu High Court has granted bail of RM40,000 with two sureties to a woman charged with murdering three Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Dungun students in a road crash on Oct 9 last year. Justice Hassan Abdul Ghani said he found the defence's argument that the collision was an unintentional road accident and that the accused, Norizan Ismail, 50, had also skidded into a drain, reasonable. 'In a plane crash, you wouldn't assume that the pilot flew the plane intending to kill people. Perhaps the same can be said of Norizan,' Bernama reported him as saying. The court ordered Norizan to report to the Dungun police station once every two months, barred her from operating any vehicles, and ordered her husband or bailor to ensure that she has no access to any vehicle keys. The court also said that she could only leave her home when accompanied by her husband. It said she must continue receiving hospital treatment and is prohibited from contacting or interfering with any witnesses until the trial concludes. Deputy public prosecutor Khairuddin Idris proposed bail of RM30,000 with two sureties but urged the court to deny bail altogether, citing the potential risk of further offences. In response to a query from the judge, defence counsel Shahir Jusoh said Norizan had a scheduled hospital appointment in Kuala Lumpur and was also undergoing alternative treatment. On Oct 15 last year, Norizan was charged with three counts of murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code in connection with the deaths of UiTM Dungun students Akmal Tukirim, 25, Ku Adib Aizad Ku Azmi, 20, and Khairil Anuar Jamaluddin, 20. The court ordered Norizan to be sent to Permai Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, which found her fit to stand trial. Norizan also faces a charge under Section 307(1) of the Penal Code at the Kuala Terengganu sessions court of attempted murder involving another UiTM student who sustained injuries in the same crash.
