CBI Director Praveen Sood gets one year's extension

New Delhi [India], May 7 (ANI): The Centre on Wednesday extended the tenure of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Praveen Sood by one year.
Sood took over as the CBI director on May 25, 2023 for a two-year term.
The Appointments Commitee of the Cabinet (ACC), based on the recommendations of the selection committee, approved Sood's extension for a period of one year beyond May 24.
'The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, based on the recommendations of the Committee, has approved the extension in tenure of Shri Praveen Sood, IPS (KN:1986) as Director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of one year beyond 24.05.2025,' a government notice said.
Sood, an IPS officer of 1986 Batch (Karnataka Cadre), before joining, he was serving as Director General of Police, Karnataka.
Sood is a graduate (B. Tech) in Civil Engineering from IIT, Delhi; Post Graduation in Public Policy & Management form IIM, Bengaluru and the Maxwell School of Governance, Syracuse University, New York.
Praveen Sood has been decorated with the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2011 and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2002. He has been awarded the Chief Minister's Gold Medal for Excellence in Service in 1996; the National e-Governance Gold Award for 'Most innovative use of technology for Traffic Management in the year 2011; and the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award in the year 2006 for contribution towards road safety and traffic management. Greta Thunberg Back In Sweden After Deportation From Israel
Activist Greta Thunberg returned home to Sweden late Tuesday after being deported from Israel, lambasting the country for its "violations of international law and war crimes" in Gaza. Thunberg was deported after Israeli security forces intercepted a boat carrying her and 11 other activists attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and break the Israeli blockade on the Palestinian territory. The 22-year-old was greeted by around 30 cheering supporters waving Palestinian flags amid a large media presence at Stockholm's Arlanda airport, after landing just after 10:30 pm (2030 GMT), an AFP journalist reported. Earlier Tuesday during a stopover in Paris, Thunberg accused Israel of "kidnapping" her and the other activists. Asked in Stockholm if she was scared when the security forces boarded the Madleen sailboat, Thunberg replied: "What I'm afraid of is that people are silent during an ongoing genocide". "What I feel most is concern for the continued violations of international law and war crimes that Israel is guilty of," Thunberg told reporters. She accused Israel of carrying out a "systematic genocide" and "systematic starvation of over two million people" in Gaza. Several rights groups including Amnesty International have accused Israel of genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza but Israel vehemently rejects the term. "We must act, we must demand that our government acts, and we must act ourselves when our complicit governments do not step up," Thunberg said. She rose to fame as a schoolgirl activist against climate change and seeks to avoid flying because of its environmental impact, going so far as to cross the Atlantic by sailboat twice. She appeared confused about reporters' questions about how it felt to travel by plane, replying, "Why are you asking about that?" Of the 12 people on board the Madleen carrying food and supplies for Gaza, eight were taken into custody after they refused to leave Israel voluntarily. Four others, including Thunberg, were deported. All of them have been banned from Israel for 100 years, according to the rights group that legally represents some of them. The October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel that triggered the war resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of official figures. The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza says at least 54,981 people, the majority civilians, have been killed in the territory since the start of the war. The UN considers these figures reliable. Out of 251 taken hostage during the Hamas attack, 54 are still held in Gaza including 32 the Israeli military says are dead.

"US constantly bullying India in name of trade, Modi government is silent": Congress' Supriya Shrinate
New Delhi [India], June 10 (ANI): Congress leader Supriya Shrinate on Tuesday said the Donald Trump administration is constantly 'bullying' India in the name of trade, adding that the Modi government is silent against the threats being made by the United States. Speaking to ANI, Shrinate also pointed out that Indian students are facing issues with the admission procedure in the US, highlighting that a huge visa backlog has been created. 'Our students' visas are not being processed, a backlog is being created. The reality is that the admissions of our students are being cancelled. Another reality is that 682 Indians were deported to India, handcuffed, in military planes by America. The reality is that Donald Trump has taken credit for the ceasefire 12 times. Again and again, he says that he threatened India in the name of trade. I feel that the United States is constantly bullying and insulting us, and the Modi government is silent,' Shrinate told ANI. Earlier on May 31, US President Donald Trump claimed credit for brokering the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan, asserting that he used trade as a negotiation tactic. Speaking at the Oval Office during an event marking Elon Musk's departure from his advisory role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Trump said, 'We stopped India and Pakistan from fighting. I believe that could have turned out into a nuclear disaster, and I want to thank the leaders of India and Pakistan, and I want to thank my people. Also, we talk trade, and we say we can't trade with people who are shooting at each other and potentially using nuclear weapons. They're great leaders in those countries, and they understood and they agreed.' Meanwhile, India has clarified that the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan took place on May 10 following contacts between the two DGMOs and while there were conversations between Indian and US leaders on the evolving situation since Operation Sindoor was launched, the issue of trade or tariff did not come up in any of those discussions. In this regard, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday criticised the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government and accused it of 'failing' to protect and safeguard the dignity of India and Indians abroad. PM Modi's 11-year tenure is 'Amritkal': Tripura CM Manik Saha
Agartala (Tripura) [India], June 10 (ANI): Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha today described Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 11-year tenure as 'Amritkal', attributing the period to significant strides in development, trust, and transformational change across India. 'Under the leadership of the Prime Minister, the state government is also prioritising development and innovation. During Prime Minister Modi's tenure, around 25 crore people in the country have risen above the poverty line,' Saha said. He was addressing a press conference at the Bharatiya Janata Party's state office in Krishnanagar, Agartala, held to mark the completion of 11 years of the BJP-led NDA government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Highlighting the Prime Minister's political journey, Dr. Saha said, 'Before assuming leadership of the country, Narendra Modi served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat for more than 13 years and transformed it into a model state. After becoming Prime Minister in 2014, he took decisive steps for national development. Over these 11 years, the nation has steadily progressed. Today, people across India and the world recognise--'Modi ji hai to sab mumkin hai'. We have never seen a Prime Minister like him.' The Chief Minister further said that PM Modi's governance focuses on Seva Sushasan and Garib Kalyan. 'From the economically weaker sections to the most marginalised individuals, he has worked to address basic problems and uplift socio-economic conditions. The government's dedication to building a developed India under his leadership is truly commendable,' he added. Saha also spoke about the recent North East Investors Summit held in Delhi, attended by Prime Minister Modi. 'PM Modi clearly stated that India cannot be fully developed until the North East is developed. In the past, fear of terrorism kept people away from this region. But now, the Prime Minister has renamed the North East and Sikkim as Ashtalakshmi, giving special attention to this region's development. Under his leadership, around 11 to 12 agreements have been signed to restore peace and stability in the region,' he said. The Chief Minister also referred to the Prime Minister's monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, which is aired on the last Sunday of every month to connect directly with the public. 'Through Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister brings important national issues to the forefront. Before 2014, there were serious concerns about the country's future--corruption, scams, and nepotism were widespread, and Tripura was no exception. But now, we have moved past those issues,' Saha concluded.
