CBI Director Praveen Sood gets one year's extension

New Delhi [India], May 7 (ANI): The Centre on Wednesday extended the tenure of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Praveen Sood by one year.
Sood took over as the CBI director on May 25, 2023 for a two-year term.
The Appointments Commitee of the Cabinet (ACC), based on the recommendations of the selection committee, approved Sood's extension for a period of one year beyond May 24.
'The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, based on the recommendations of the Committee, has approved the extension in tenure of Shri Praveen Sood, IPS (KN:1986) as Director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of one year beyond 24.05.2025,' a government notice said.
Sood, an IPS officer of 1986 Batch (Karnataka Cadre), before joining, he was serving as Director General of Police, Karnataka.
Sood is a graduate (B. Tech) in Civil Engineering from IIT, Delhi; Post Graduation in Public Policy & Management form IIM, Bengaluru and the Maxwell School of Governance, Syracuse University, New York.
Praveen Sood has been decorated with the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2011 and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2002. He has been awarded the Chief Minister's Gold Medal for Excellence in Service in 1996; the National e-Governance Gold Award for 'Most innovative use of technology for Traffic Management in the year 2011; and the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award in the year 2006 for contribution towards road safety and traffic management. Andhra Pradesh HC adjourns plea against DyCM Pawan Kalyan
VIJAYAWADA: Former IAS officer Vijay Kumar on Monday filed a petition in the Andhra Pradesh High Court seeking interim orders to restrict Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan from acting in films, participating in entertainment programmes, producing and promoting films, and appearing in advertisements. In his petition, Vijay Kumar alleged that Pawan Kalyan misused his office and government funds in the making of the film Harihara Veeramallu and requested the court to direct the CBI to conduct an impartial investigation into the matter. The High Court, comprising Judge Dr Justice Venkata Jyotirmayi Pratapa, rejected the request of the petitioner's lawyer to issue notices to the respondents—the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), ACB, and Pawan Kalyan. The judge refused to issue notices at this stage, posted the hearing to next week, and ordered the registry to print the names of the lawyers representing the CBI and ACB in the list of cases to be heard.

US must ‘crush' Russian economy by penalising countries buying oil from them: Trump aide
United States Senator Lindsey Graham, an aide to Donald Trump, has advised that the US should 'crush' the Russian economy by imposing penalties on countries that purchase oil from them. If this were to happen, the move would directly affect India, which is a significant buyer of Russian crude. In a post on X, Graham stated, 'My advice to President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio is to convince Putin that if this war does not come to an end, we will crush the Russian economy by going after countries that buy their cheap oil and gas.' Graham's comments appear to conflict with those of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who said during a press conference with Trump in Alaska on 15 August that bilateral trade between the two nations had increased by 20% since Trump's reinstatement as President. "Russia and the US can offer each other so much in trade, digital, high-tech, and in space exploration. We see that Arctic cooperation is also very possible in our international context, for example, between the far east of Russia and the west coast of the US. Overall, it's very important for our countries to turn the page, to go back to cooperation," Russian President Putin said. The comments came as Trump said in an interview with Fox News that Russia had lost India as an oil client. He made this statement while discussing the economic aspect of Russian President Vladimir Putin coming to the table for talks, ANI reported. "Well, they lost an oil client so to speak, which is India, which was doing about 40% of the oil, China as you know is doing a If I did secondary sanctions, it would be devastating from their standpoint. If I have to do it, I'll do it, maybe I won't have to do it," Trump said during the interview. Trump's comments follow his recent imposition of a 50% tariff on Indian imports, citing New Delhi's crude oil purchases from Russia.
