Karnataka HC to govt: Tech analysis done for Cauvery Aarti, amusement park at KRS?

New Indian Express14 hours ago

BENGALURU: The Karnataka High Court on Friday directed the State Government and Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd (CNNL) to inform whether any technical assessment was done on dam safety before approving the proposed Disneyland-type amusement park at a cost of Rs 2,663 crore near Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) in Mandya district.
Noting that an affidavit has to be submitted by the State Government, the HC also sought information from the government on the proposed construction of an open theatre to accommodate 20,000-25,000 people and civil works for a parking lot to witness the proposed Cauvery Aarti near KRS on the lines of Ganga Aarti.
A division bench of acting Chief Justice V Kameswar Rao and Justice CM Joshi passed the order after hearing two PILs filed by K Boraiah and four other farmers from Srirangapatna taluk and also Sunanda Jayaram, a farmer leader from Gejjalagere of Mandya taluk.
They have questioned the May 13 tender inviting proposals from private entities to develop the Disneyland-type project and to maintain it for 30 years. Meanwhile, Sunanda Jayaram challenged the principal approval given by the Water Resources Department on May 3 to CNNL to utilise Rs 92 crore for creating permanent infrastructure for Cauvery Aarti.
The petitioners in both petitions contended that the HC had banned all types of mining and quarrying activities within a 20 km radius of the dam till the completion of a study by experts and the decision has to be taken by the Committee on Dam Safety but the safety of the dam has been ignored by the State Government by taking up both projects.
Advocate General K Shashikiran Shetty assured the court that the dam's safety has been kept in mind while approving the projects.
The court, however, directed the State Government and the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd to file an affidavit on the conduct of the technical assessment of works of the proposed projects.
The State Government informed the High Court that the tender for the amusement park project is yet to be completed and the tender for installing the Cauvery statue is completed and the work order has to be issued.
Further hearing is on July 23.

Centre committed to invest in Bengal's railway infrastructure: Vaishnaw

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday said the Centre is committed to investing in the railway sector in West Bengal and has significantly increased allocations as part of its broader push to boost connectivity, cargo movement and support micro and small enterprises in the state. Speaking at the inauguration of the Udyami Sammelan Mela 2025 at the National Library in Kolkata, Vaishnaw said the railway budget for Bengal has seen a sharp rise from around Rs 3,000 crore under the previous regime to around Rs 14,000 crore now. The minister outlined upcoming projects, including the development of the New Jalpaiguri-Kolkata Rail Corridor to world-class standards, a statement said. "A master plan has been prepared for new railway lines, Gati Shakti cargo terminals, and the upgradation of the chicken neck corridor to a four-line network," he said, adding that the Sivok-Siliguri-New Mal Junction section will also be linked to the main corridor. Vaishnaw, the railway minister, said that over the last 11 years, India has added around 35,000 km of new railway tracks, including 5,300 km in 2023-24 alone, while also adding 1,400 locomotives and 35,000 wagons annually to the network. He emphasised India's need for "economic decolonisation" and simplification of systems to promote ease of doing business. During the day, the minister flagged off the inaugural Purulia-Bankura-Howrah MEMU train via Masagram and said the Centre's focus is to expand railway coverage besides modernising the sector. He flagged off the train through video conferencing from Santragachi railway station in the state. Vaishnaw said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's focus is to expand railway coverage, modernise railways with technology, infrastructure and amenities and improve passenger experience. Around 1.2 million railway staffers are tirelessly working towards realising this dream, he said. The Purulia-Bankura-Howrah MEMU train via Masagram would boost rural, local and regional rail connectivity and passenger convenience, he said. The service is set to improve daily commute options for thousands of passengers across Purba and Paschim Bardhaman, Purulia, Bankura and surrounding districts. By connecting key junctions in West Bengal, the train will not only ensure faster travel but also facilitate economic activity, he said. He also said during the 2014-25 period, Kolkata Metro added 41 km to its network, compared to only 28 km between 1972, when the project started, and 2014. Underlining challenges related to land acquisition and traffic permission for Kolkata Metro and other railway projects, Vaishnaw urged the state government "to rise above other things for the benefit of people". He referred to such challenges on the Kolkata Metro route at Kidderpore, Chingrighata and Beleghata area and also to the Bishnupur-Tarakeshwar rail route. Vaishnaw lauded the ongoing development of the Santragachi railway station as an Amrit Bharat station, especially the progress of work in the last one and a half years. The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is a long-term plan to improve railway stations across India in a step-by-step manner. "The station is being modernised as a passenger and environment-friendly facility. It has been designed to handle over 50,000 passengers daily by 2063, in addition to ensuring time-bound train movement," he said. Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, who also attended the Udyami Sammelan Mela, said the government is working on simplifying the IT Act to match the pace of digital innovation. He acknowledged the long-pending demand for a permanent circuit bench of the Calcutta High Court in Siliguri, adding that the matter is under active consideration.

Transport commissioner issues termination notices to abolish border check posts in Maharashtra

Mumbai: Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar on Saturday issued termination notices to 22 border check posts in the state. This indicates that the border check posts, which are allegedly a hub for malpractices, are finally being abolished in Maharashtra. The decision was in line with the central govt directives and the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system. The aim is to streamline interstate transport and remove obstacles to the movement of commercial vehicles, said a senior transport official. A year ago, Madhya Pradesh abolished its border check posts. State transport minister Pratap Sarnaik said that these border check posts, established in 1966, were intended to control vehicle movement, ensure compliance with transport regulations, and collect road taxes. However, after the implementation of GST and advancements in digital measures, the need for these physical check posts diminished. The transporters' unions repeatedly demanded their closure through various representations. Consequently, a positive report addressing administrative issues was sent to the CM, and on approval, the border check posts will now be closed, Sarnaik said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Circus Magic Unveiled GCE Read More Undo In this context, a committee chaired by Bhimanwar conducted an in-depth study of the decision's impact and effectiveness. Based on this report, the govt concluded that the need for physical inspections could be effectively replaced by online systems and electronic monitoring. This transition will increase efficiency, reduce delays, and help prevent malpractices, according to Sarnaik. Sources said that a private firm was appointed for the border check post project, and agreements were made for the operation and maintenance of the facilities. However, due to the decision to close these check posts, compensation of Rs 504 crore needs to be paid to the private entity, an official said. "Once this amount is paid, the related technology and immovable assets will become the property of the transport department," the official added. Bal Malkit Singh from All India Motor Transport Congress said, "This landmark decision comes in response to repeated appeals and follow-ups by transport unions, stakeholders, and the central govt. The move aims to eliminate bottlenecks in interstate transportation, enhance road safety, and implement a paperless, technology-driven monitoring system in line with the 'Ease of Doing Business' framework."
