STV to create new commercial radio station

The National21-05-2025
The new mainstream music station, aimed mainly at 35-to-54-year-olds, will be available on DAB and online.
STV said that creating a radio station is a 'natural extension' for the company and will help it create a strong, 'future-proofed' advertising business across digital and audio.
The studio will be based at STV's headquarters in Pacific Quay, Glasgow.

Bobby Hain, managing director audience: news, audio and regulatory at STV, said: 'We already have a strong connection with our audiences who know and trust our brand and radio is a natural extension for us, so we're delighted to be breaking into this market with an exciting new offering for listeners across Scotland.
'We have a clear ambition to be a top-three commercial radio station in Scotland by 2030.
'This is a move that will help us grow our audience even further and create exciting new commercial opportunities.
'Together, our broadcast channel, streaming platform and radio station will enable us to offer a powerful cross-platform and affordable advertising proposition with real regional flexibility and local targeting capabilities.'
The radio station will be headed by Graham Bryce, who was previously the chief operating officer of Bauer Media UK.
It has been announced as part of a wider strategic update from STV on Wednesday.
The radio station is part of its newly created Audience division, which incorporates the company's broadcast channel STV, streaming service STV Player and the new audio business.
The name of the station and its key presenters will be announced later this year.
Bryce said: 'I'm delighted to be leading this new venture with STV, expanding its offering into the dynamic world of audio.
'Radio listening remains robust and with Scots having a strong appetite for commercial radio I'm confident our new national station will offer something different and exciting to the market.
'This will be a truly national commercial station for Scotland with presenters, news and content focused on the needs and interests of listeners living in Scotland.
'We believe there is a real gap in the market, and I can't wait to get started and shake things up.'

Scotch whisky distillery releases 12,300 bottles from rare wine casks

The limited edition single-malt, bottled at 50.7% ABV, is restricted to 12,300 bottles worldwide and will be available from Thursday August 7 via the distillery's website and select independent retailers across the UK. Exports are also planned to key markets including Germany, France and the United States. The whisky has been aged exclusively in Marsala Vergine DOC casks sourced from the Frazzitta winery, one of Sicily's oldest Marsala producers. The winery is known for ageing its wine in traditional oxidative conditions for up to 30 years, giving the casks a dry, nutty, and complex character — closer to a dry sherry than the sweeter Marsala typically used in cooking. Master distiller Alasdair Day (above) said the casks imparted 'an exceptional depth of flavour' to Raasay's lightly peated spirit. 'It's one of the most distinctive cask maturations we've ever released,' he added, citing flavours of baked apples, dried pear, toasted nuts, and a smoky coffee finish. The release also debuts new packaging for the distillery's limited editions, with a design inspired by Raasay's volcanic landscape and fossil-marked geology. The bottle features slate-grey tones and embossed fossil textures as a nod to the island's terrain. Managing director William Dobbie said the redesign aims to give the brand 'a clearer identity' as it expands its portfolio. READ MORE: Media 'giving false impression' Scots care about independence, Tory MP claims 'We've grown rapidly in recent years, and this helps distinguish our limited releases from the core range,' he said. As with all Raasay whiskies, the spirit was distilled, matured and bottled entirely on the island. The distillery uses a mix of peated and unpeated barley, matured separately before being married together to create its signature profile. Founded in 2017, Raasay Distillery has become known for small-batch, experimental releases that aim to reflect the island's character and surroundings. This latest release brings a distinct international influence, combining Scottish craftsmanship with Sicilian wine heritage in an uncommon cask type.

Scots firm goes bust after 85 years as 100 jobs axed

Staff at the Ayrshire-based firm say they have been "blindsided" by the news JOBS BOMBSHELL Scots firm goes bust after 85 years as 100 jobs axed Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A SCOTS window firm has gone bust after 85 years of trading - leaving around 100 workers jobless overnight. Stunned staff at Andrew Wright Windows say they were 'blindsided' by the announcement this week, after bosses called a surprise meeting. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Andrew Wright Windows made the bombshell announcement this week Furious workers have blasted the Ayrshire-based firm as "selfish, ignorant and shameless" after the bombshell news left them jobless The closure comes just months after the business, which has its headquarters in Irvine, was boasting about booming profits and big plans — with turnover nearing a whopping £10 million. And just days ago North Ayrshire Council revealed the firm had secured a £1million contract with them for work. Founded more than 85 years ago, the firm had recently been taken over by businessmen Mark Bradford and Jamie Fraser. The pair bought the once family-run outfit in 2023. Employees, many with decades of service, say they were still hearing positive updates right up until the axe fell. Heartbroken workers are being told to wait for letters on how to claim unpaid wages and holiday cash. The company issued a brief statement online, promising more info 'as soon as possible'. Andrew Wright Windows said: "It is with regret and sadness that we announce the closure of Andrew Wright Windows. "Further information will be posted on the company's website page as soon as possible." Meanwhile, insolvency experts at Opus are believed to be handling the collapse and bosses at North Ayrshire Council are believed to be looking for another contractor to take on the £1million work. Home improvement chain with 442 locations reveals bankruptcy plans as retailers forced to close 2,600 stores in months However staff have been left furious at the sudden collapse. One furious worker, Mick Jennings said: 'Plus no wages this week either and, they knew well before yesterday . "I was only there six years but feel it for guys who've been there 30 to 40 years . No warning and no respect. "They don't need to worry about money or bills . Selfish ignorant and shameless." "The shock is still ongoing, I feel completely blindsided," another staff member said. Customers also vented their fury on social media claiming the company was still taking orders just days before the shock announcement. Dewberry MacManus said: "What happens if you're waiting on a new front door? six weeks ago it was measured and deposit paid?" R&R Installation Services said: " Materials due for collection this week with no notice! "At least allow people a chance to sort elsewhere if they knew this was happening! Continuing to accept orders right up until yesterday." Another, Lisa Mc, said: "Absolutely shocking taking people's money arranging fittings knowing all this was in the background!" Meanwhile, insolvency experts at Opus are believed to be handling the collapse and bosses at North Ayrshire Council are believed to be looking for another contractor to take on the £1million work. Andrew Wright Windows and North Ayrshire Council have been contacted for comment.
