Morocco's Istiqlal Party urges Spain's People's Party to clarify position on Sahara

The Istiqlal Party (PI) has voiced concern over the Spanish People's Party's (PP) ambiguity on the Moroccan Sahara issue. The message was conveyed by PI Secretary-General Nizar Baraka in a letter addressed to Alberto Núñez Feijóo, recently re-elected as head of the PP during its congress in Madrid.
«We express our deep concern about the lack of clarity from the People's Party regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue, especially at a time when there is growing international support for the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty», Baraka wrote.
He emphasized that Morocco's autonomy proposal, presented in 2007, is «the only realistic and credible framework to resolve this artificial conflict», and highlighted the international momentum behind it, namely backing from the United States, 22 European countries including France and the UK, as well as numerous African, Arab, Latin American, and Asian nations.
Baraka also expressed surprise that the PP, despite its political influence and membership in the European People's Party (EPP), has not aligned itself with this global consensus.
He argued that Morocco's solution would help «ensure stability in the Maghreb and the Sahel» and «reduce irregular migration by fostering development and job creation in the region», a key issue for both the Spanish right and far right.
Baraka concluded by expressing hope that «the People's Party will act with clarity and strategic vision, in line with this historic moment and the exemplary relationship between our two countries, one that we must continue to strengthen as political parties».
The Istiqlal Party, the PP, and Morocco's National Rally of Independents (RNI), led by Aziz Akhannouch, are all members of the Centrist Democrat International.
During its 11th congress, the PP reaffirmed its support for «respect for international law and United Nations resolutions regarding Western Sahara», according to a document shared with attendees.
Ahead of the July 23, 2023 legislative elections, a Spanish media outlet reported that the PP was maintaining direct contact with Moroccan officials, particularly with the Istiqlal Party. The Spanish conservative party reportedly assured Rabat that no major shift in its stance on the Sahara issue would occur if it won the election.

'It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that I received the news of the passing of His Excllency, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, my predecessor, who departed this life, today, Sunday, July 13, at a hospital in the united Kingdom,' Bola Tinubu announced on Sunday via the social media platform X. Buhari, marked by his stern approach and uncompromising rhetoric on corruption, earned a reputation among his supporters as a determined reformer. The Moroccan monarch said he received the news of Buhari's passing with great emotion and sincere grief. In his message , he prayed for divine mercy and eternal peace for the late president, offering words of comfort to Buhari's family and the Nigerian people. Sudan Army Battles RSF Assault in El Fasher

Rabat – Yet another major escalation of violence gripped the Sudanese region of Darfur over the weekend, with a battle over the besieged city of El Fasher. This is the first time that the RSF fighters have entered the city since the battle began 15 months ago. The battle between the insurgent Sudanese paramilitary group the Rapid Support Forces and the city's defences lasted for seven hours. On Friday, RSF captured the city's cattle market, prison and military base while broadcasting their assault and forcing their way into the city's center. On Sunday the military was successful in pushing the RSF further out of the city in a violent retaliation that led to shooting and shelling in the city's residential areas. The RSF fighters have been engaged in similar actions, guarding and surrounding the city for around 15 months with large trench fortifications This recent incident marked their 220 th offensive and proved most successful. The RSF was able to take control of the largest commercial area – the city's livestock marketplace – which has closed for several months. They took videos of themselves throughout the conquered territories, posting them on social media. Shalla Prison and the military's Central Reserve Forces headquarters were also captured for some time. However, the army was able to remove them from all vital areas. The city has been branded recently by the Norwegian Refugee Council as a death trap , with the president of the council saying, 'We are hearing its horror stories and terror weekly shelling attacks on civilian infrastructure.' Al Fasher is the capital of Northern Darfur, a region which has suffered from constant violence since the civil war began in 2023 in the world's largest humanitarian crisis . Since the conflict began 150,000 people have been killed and 12 million have fled their homes and become refugees. The city has also had its communications cut off for the past few months. This civil war twenty years after the Darfur Genocide led by Omar Al-Bashir in a massive attack against local civilians, which led to his imprisonment by the ICC in 2019. The International Criminal Court has said this weekend that there are very ' reasonable grounds ' to believe that serious war crimes and crimes against humanity have occurred in the region. Within the civil war, the ICC and various other international actors believe that the RSF have carried out a genocide against the non-Arab population. There are several refugee and displacement camps near to the city such as Zamzam camp on the city's outskirts and Tawila near to the area. Around 379,000 people have moved to these areas for safety. Both of these camps have reported horrific stories about their conditions, with reports of cholera and harsh weather conditions. There are no hospitals or medical personnel, and many have died due to these conditions. This conflict has led to a massive escalation and destabilisation in the civil war. Casablanca historic building demolition sparks legal battle by El Manouzi family

On Monday morning, public authorities in Casablanca began demolishing several buildings in the city's historic center, including an apartment building structure belonging to the family of activist Haj Ali El Manouzi. The building, located in the Sidi Belyout district, is considered by the family to be of significant symbolic and historical value. The demolition operation started in the L'Bhira neighborhood, targeting a building adjacent to the El Manouzi residence. In response, the family has strongly opposed the move, arguing that their property is part of the city's heritage and should be preserved. Prior to the demolition, the family had sent an open letter to several key officials, including the Minister of the Interior, the Public Prosecutor at the Casablanca Court of Appeal, the Governor of the Casablanca-Settat region, and members of the city council. In the letter, reviewed by Yabiladi, the family's lawyer expressed formal opposition to the demolition and emphasized that an annulment appeal had been filed with the President of the Administrative Court. Under Moroccan law, such an appeal suspends any evacuation or demolition orders until a final ruling is issued, particularly in cases involving buildings at risk of collapse. The family supported their legal action with a judicial expert report, conducted in the presence of a representative from the municipal council. Notably, other relevant authorities, including from the prefecture, were absent despite having been notified. The expert concluded that the building is structurally sound and does not qualify as a building at risk of collapse. Calls for due process and respect for judicial rulings The family called for respect for legal procedures and the findings of the judicial report, warning that any harm to the building's residents would constitute criminal acts under Moroccan penal law. They argued that even a preliminary attempt to demolish the property, in defiance of court procedures, would be considered a felony. Lawyer Mustapha El Manouzi also sent a formal notice to the President of the Casablanca Urban Municipality, reiterating the judicial expert's conclusions and demanding that the demolition be suspended until the Rabat Court of Appeal rules on the pending appeal. In a statement to Yabiladi, family member Abdelkarim El Manouzi said residents of the building and surrounding area were verbally informed only two days earlier to vacate by Sunday, ahead of the demolition set for Monday morning. According to him, no official or written notice was served to the property owners. He added that the family was caught off guard at around 7 a.m. by the arrival of bulldozers, accompanied by security forces. Authorities began demolishing adjacent structures and removed the door to the El Manouzi building, without showing any official documentation. When asked for the demolition order, the governor reportedly told the family to obtain it from the district office, but did not provide it directly. Abdelkarim El Manouzi described the demolition as «arbitrary and illegal», calling for a «just and fair resolution». He stressed that while the family does not oppose public interest projects, they reject any action taken outside the legal framework. He reminded officials that the judiciary has not yet ruled on the case, and carrying out demolition under these conditions «has no legal basis». He confirmed that the family intends to file a new complaint against the decision.
