Sudden showers, gusty winds bring relief to scorching Indore, heavy rain likely
Indore: Sudden showers accompanied by strong winds on Monday afternoon brought much-needed relief from humidity to Indoreans. Around 12:30 pm, dark clouds gathered over the skies, followed by a spell of rain accompanied by strong winds that lasted nearly half an hour. Though the downpour eased, cloudy skies lingered before sunshine broke through briefly. Within an hour, however, the city was again covered in dark clouds, leading to continuous rainfall until about 4 pm. The Met department recorded 17.25 mm of rainfall within half an hour from 12:30 pm to 1 pm and 28 mm of rainfall till 5:30 pm. Indore has so far recorded 14 inches (352.8 mm) of rainfall this season, well below the usual 21 inches (533 mm) expected by mid-August. Weatherman, however, expect a turnaround in the coming days. "A system over Odisha and an active monsoon trough across Malwa-Nimar are likely to bring good rainfall for the next four to five days," said Dr Divya Surendran, Met scientist from IMD Bhopal. She added that multiple synoptic systems, including a developing low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, are expected to sustain the wet spell. The IMD has also forecast heavy rain, gusty winds, and thunder at isolated places across Madhya Pradesh, particularly Burhanpur, Khandwa, Khargone, Barwani, and Alirajpur on Tuesday. With the second half of August forecast to be wetter, experts believe many districts could complete their rainfall quota within the month. IMD issues heavy rainfall warning for 15 dists
Bhubaneswar: Heavy rainfall is likely to occur in several districts under the influence of a well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is likely to turn into a depression on Tuesday, IMD said on Monday. A red warning for heavy to very heavy rain was issued for Koraput, Nabarangpur and Malkangiri districts with isolated places likely to get extremely heavy rainfall along with thunderstorm and lightning, accompanied by gusty surface wind speeds reaching 30-40kmph. An orange warning was issued for Kalahandi, Rayagada, Gajapati and Kandhamal districts. Heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorm with lightning, with gusty surface wind speeds reaching 30-40 kmph, are very likely to occur at one or two places over these districts. A yellow warning of heavy rain has been also issued for Ganjam, Nayagarh, Boudh, Balangir, Nuapada, Puri, Khurda and Cuttack districts. The low-pressure area was located over west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal and north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts at 8:30am on Monday. It is likely to move west-northwestwards, concentrate into a depression, and cross the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts before noon on Tuesday. Under the influence of the depression, strong winds may damage plantations, horticulture and standing crops. "Minor damage may occur to loose/unsecured structures. Partial damage may occur to vulnerable structures due to strong winds," the IMD bulletin said. The highest rainfall of 130mm was recorded at Kotpad in Koraput district on Tuesday, followed by Malkangiri's 110mm. Several other places in south Odisha received more than 50mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the deep sea until Aug 20. "People may be advised to keep watch on the weather and take safe shelter during the thunderstorm activity to protect from lightning," read the advisory from the special relief commissioner (SRC). Humid heat sticks to city, AQI a respite
New Delhi: Delhi reeled under hot and humid conditions on Monday, with the discomfort compounded by high moisture levels in the air. The feel-like or heat index was 47 degrees Celsius at 2.30 pm on Monday, as only some areas got very light rain. The maximum temperature was recorded at 34.9 degrees Celsius, one degree above normal. However, the temperature, along with high relative humidity, which oscillated between 64% and 98% throughout the day, made the outdoors uncomfortable. The minimum temperature stood at 24.8 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal. Safdarjung, which is the city's base station, did not receive any rain between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm. India Meteorological Department has predicted very light to light rain over the next few days. "Easterly winds are blowing, and humidity is likely to remain high.
