Lyon relegated to Ligue 2 over financial problems
The seven-time French champions were hit with a provisional relegation back in November after racking up massive debts, and although they have since sold a number of first-team players, French football watchdog the DNCG upheld the relegation following meetings on Tuesday.
The decision was announced by the French Football League (LFP) on Tuesday evening. Monaco, Nantes and Paris FC will face no further action.
Although Lyon can still appeal against the ruling, the decision to relegate a club that won seven consecutive titles between 2001-02 and 2007-08, and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League as recently as 2020, will send shockwaves through French football.
The club's president John Textor told L'Equipe last week he was confident the club's financial position had been resolved, having said back in November there was 'no chance' the club would be relegated.
Textor is in the process of selling his shares in Premier League club Crystal Palace, who are at risk of being denied their place in the Europa League next season as Lyon have also qualified after finishing sixth in Ligue 1.
A sale to Woody Johnson, owner of the NFL's New York Jets, has been agreed but the Premier League is yet to ratify the deal and Johnson must yet pass the Premier League's owners' and directors' test.
After receiving the provisional relegation last year, Lyon sold the likes of Said Benrahma, Anthony Lopes and Maxence Caqueret in January, and this summer they have already sold Rayan Cherki to Manchester City.

As a result, Rodrygo is viewed as the most likely option and the player is said to be open to leaving Real Madrid. However, Madrid boss Xabi Alonso has stated he wants to keep Rodrygo, stating last month: "He's a Madrid player and I will have a conversation with everyone because we need to do so. We'll get to know each other. He's a spectacular player and we need him." Zinchenko price tag set Arsenal have slapped a £17m price tag on Oleksandr Zinchenko and AC Milan are willing to meet their demands. Zinchenko made just five league starts last season, with the likes of Myles Lewis-Skelly and Riccardo Calafiori ahead of him in the pecking order. According to Corriere dello Sport, Milan have lined up Zinchenko as a replacement for Theo Hernandez. Hernandez is closing in on a move to Al-Hilal and Zinchenko is said to be open to joining Milan, with his wages the only potential stumbling block. Club Brugge left-back Maxim De Cuyper is said to have been identified as a potential alternative. Gyokeres threat According to Portuguese outlet Record, Viktor Gyokeres has made it clear that he wants to join Arsenal after speaking with Sporting president Federico Varandas. Gyokeres and Varandas are said to have spoken on the phone, with the striker threatening to never play another game for the club and claiming that he will 'never forgive' them if the deal falls through. However, Varandas has publicly stated that he will not be 'blackmailed' into selling the player on the cheap. "Threats, blackmail and insults don't work with me. "I can guarantee that Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for €60m+10m (£51m+£8.5m) because I never promised him that," Varandas said.

Paul Pogba will return to football this summer after his doping ban and is tipped to join Monaco - but the ex-Manchester United midfielder insists no deal has been struck Paul Pogba insists he "hasn't signed anything" amid reports the ex- Manchester United star is about to join Monaco. The Frenchman has been out of the game for nearly two years due to a doping ban and is looking for a new club. Most recently he had been on the books at Juventus but the Italian side have shown no interest in bringing him back for a third time. Pogba is now into his 30s but has proved to be hugely talented throughout his career, even if consistency has evaded him. Monaco, who are in the Champions League, are ready to take a put on the World Cup winner with Le Parisien reporting last week that Pogba was set to join the Ligue 1 side on a free transfer after agreeing a two-year deal. They claimed he had "made significant financial sacrifices" to secure the deal. It would be a huge boost for Monaco with Pogba potentially returning to his homeland for the first time since leaving Le Harve in 2009. However the player has come out and poured water on the idea of heading to the Riviera. He said on Sergio Aguero's podcast, La Casa del Kun: "I haven't signed anything, but there's interest. We'll see." Pogba has also flirted with the idea of heading to South America to play with Argentine giants Boca Juniors, citing their fans as a huge draw. He said: "In life, you never know. I loved the people who went to see Boca's match (at the Club World Cup), it's crazy because I went to Marseille, which is hot, Naples is hot, but Boca... I've never seen that in my life." The Frenchman's career is yet to hit the heights that were once expected of him. He first hit the heights when he left Manchester and excelled at Juventus, which prompted those at Old Trafford to spend a club-record fee to bring him back when Jose Mourinho was in charge. However his six years in Manchester were hugely inconsistent and, after claiming two trophies in his first year, he failed to pick up anymore silverware. He return to Juventus when his contract expired but the Old Lady were not the force of old and his stint was somewhat underwhelming. Pogba did previously underline his desire to again play for Les Blues during an interview with Sky Sports. He said: "I hope. It is in my mind for sure. I have to be ready for that. Bryan Mbeumo holds private talks about Man Utd transfer after latest bid

More is required however as the Red Devils look to strengthen their forward line. Talk over the futures of Bryan Mbeumo and Viktor Gyokeres remains but United appear to have made little progress in getting their next deal over the line. And there are exits to facilitate too. Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Jadon Sancho do not appear to have futures under Amorim but the club have yet to find a transfer fee for any. Man Utd's secret weapon Manchester United have launched a new bid for Bryan Mbeumo worth more than £60m amid interest from Tottenham and he has already been speaking to a potential new team-mate about the move. Mbeumo has already indicated his willingness to join United but has since seen a bid arrived for his services from Spurs, who are now coached by the player's former boss Thomas Frank. Mbeumo starred for Brentford under Frank last season and scored 20 Premier League goals to garner interest from around the Premier League. And while Frank's new position could help Tottenham's quest to sign the player, United have their own asset in the fight. Goalkeeper Andre Onana has been in contact with Mbeumo about joining the club, per reports. United's shotstopper is an international teammate of Mbeumo and the pair are said to have 'spoken about linking up' under Ruben Amorim. Garnacho's preference Alejandro Garnacho is keen on a move to Chelsea this summer, opening the door to a potential eye-catching swap deal with Christopher Nkunku. Manchester United boss Amorim has told Garnacho to find a new clubin the summer transfer window. Napoli saw a bid rejected in January and Chelsea were among the interested parties during the winter window. The Blues appear to remain interest with a swap deal involving Garnacho and Christopher Nkunku touted. Direct talks have yet been held but the Athletic reports that Garnacho would be open to the Stamford Bridge move because he wants to stay in the Premier League. The Blues are closing in on the signing Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens however which could make a transfer more difficult. Onana's transfer stance Andre Onana wants to stay at Manchester United despite speculation over his future. The former Inter Milan and Ajax star wants to prove he deserves to remain the club's No.1 even though Monaco have enquired over his availability. Onana has told friends he wants to stay and fight to keep his first-choice status after signing from Inter Milan for £47.2m in 2023. The Cameroon international did deliver a cryptic reponse whe asked if he could leave United this summer however. "Will I leave?" he said. 'I don't know, we'll see." The 29-year-old drew interest from Monaco and the Saudi Pro League, where he could have doubled his £120,000-a-week salary. But sources close to Onana have revealed his desire to remain at Old Trafford.
