‘I'm so excited to be back': Michelle Ryan to return to EastEnders as Zoe Slater
The 41-year-old will return to the role for the first time in 20 years, with her character having been involved in some of the show's best-known storylines, including one which saw her tell her mother Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) 'you ain't my mother', before finding out she was.
Speaking about her return, Ryan said: 'It all happened at the right time.
'I'd already been thinking about a return because I'd met up with Kacey Ainsworth and Kim Medcalf and we were reminiscing our fond memories of the show, and I'd also joined social media and saw that there was still a lot of love for the character.
'It just so happened that at the same time, EastEnders had announced a new exec who was keen to explore the potential of a return as he was such a massive fan of Zoe and the Slaters, so both of our worlds aligned at the right time, and I'm so excited to be back.
'When Ben (Wadey, EastEnders executive producer) pitched me the storylines, and when I read the scripts, I knew it was the right decision.'
Wadey added of his decision to bring Zoe back: 'Before I even stepped into the role, Zoe Slater was on my wishlist of returnees as we haven't seen her on screen for 20 years.
'Her character has transcended time due to her popular storylines.
'I was absolutely delighted when Michelle agreed to return, and I'm thrilled to welcome her back to Walford.
'Whilst I can't say too much at this stage, Zoe's return is just one of the many exciting storylines we have planned.'
Producers say Zoe will return with 20 years of 'deep-rooted resentment' towards her mother, fractured family relationships, and siblings she has never met, adding that the character 'will be in for one hell of a ride' when she returns.
On her character's return storylines, Ryan said: 'I can't say too much as there is a lot of drama to come, but Zoe is a mess.
'She's not the girl that left Walford 20 years ago, and she's been really struggling on her own. She has her defences up, but this week you will see that she needs help, but whether she is willing to accept it is another story.'
Zoe had countless failed love interests, including one with Dennis Rickman (Nigel Harman), which saw Zoe embroiled in the murder of Den Watts (Leslie Grantham) with accomplices Chrissie Watts (Tracy-Ann Oberman) and Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf), after her affair with Den and subsequent pregnancy.
The character left Albert Square in 2005, when she reconciled with Kat after admitting the truth about Den's murder, but during her time away from Walford, Zoe and Kat's relationship broke down once again and the pair have been estranged ever since.
Speaking about how it felt to return to the set, Ryan added: 'It feels like coming home. After doing my first few scenes, it was like I'd never been away.'
Zoe made her first appearance in the soap in September 2000 along with the rest of the Slater family, and last appeared on screen in June 2005, when she left Walford for Spain after revealing her part in Den's murder to mum, Kat.
She will also appear in Tuesday and Wednesday's episodes before making a full return in the summer.

Donny arrives on police duty and privately informs Mercedes and Myra that Bobby has escaped the secure home, suspectedly in a social worker's car. Neighbours Andrew and Holly embark on a road trip in search of answers about his biological family while Wendy rushes home for a job interview at the school. She's thrown to learn about Holly's involvement in Andrew's journey for clarity. Meanwhile, Karl is in hospital, subdued and introspective, as Jane secures an interview with Darcy in prison. Elsewhere, Max's mother, Yvette, and sister, Saskia, pay him a visit. But he's shocked when Yvette announces she'd like Saskia to stay in Erinsborough. Home and Away Justin runs into Bree and Remi, desperate to get a message to Theo. Remi agrees - as long as he helps Kirby through her songwriting. When Kirby plays him some of her songs, Justin's feedback is limited. His apparent lack of interest sends her spiralling. Cash is desperate for Eden to go away with him, but she has other ideas, telling Mackenzie to decline on her behalf. But Cash gets Mackenzie on his side with a bombshell. Another shock then rattles the Bay - Eden's mum, Deb.

EastEnders' Phil injured in showdown with boiling water amid Nigel story
EastEnders' Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) is injured next week as he starts to feel out of his depth caring for his old friend Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley). Earlier this year, Phil stepped up to become a carer for Nigel, who has early-onset dementia and has been experiencing worsening symptoms in recent weeks. In scenes to air on the BBC soap next week, concerns grow for Phil and how he is coping with his responsibilities after an accident involving Nigel at No. 55. 'This week, there's an incident where Phil is making a meal and needs go out halfway through, so Nigel decides to finish the cooking,' actor Paul Bradley, who plays Nigel, explains. 'Unfortunately, he puts a pan on and forgets about it so when Phil returns, there's a situation that sees them both reaching for the pan.' As they grapple over the pan, Phil gets splashed with boiling water, and while he later tries to hide his injuries, his ex-wife Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) is worried when she notices them. Realising something is wrong, Kat presses Phil to be honest about Nigel's condition, and during their heart-to-heart, she realises Phil is in over his head. 'Phil is struggling but he doesn't show it to Nigel – he's just determined to look after his mate,' Paul says. 'What Phil is doing is very loving, but it's quite a challenge. However, Phil is one of those people who will take on something difficult and take that responsibility on his shoulders.' As such, Phil later refuses Kat's suggestion that he needs extra support to care for Nigel – but things are brought into sharp focus following an incident involving Lexi Pearce (Isabella Brown). EastEnders' Barry star finally lands new TV role two decades later
Shaun Williamson was once best known as Barry Evans in EastEnders. Twenty years after his exit from the BBC One soap, he's tackling a different challenge - and it may surprise you. He was once known as Janine Butcher's unlucky husband Barry Evans in EastEnders but now, Shaun Williamson tackles a new challenge on the box as he joins the Celebrity Puzzling line-up. Jeremy Vine, who fronts the eight-part Channel 5 series, was surprised by how well Shaun Williamson handled the new game. 'I knew Shaun Williamson would be nervous about it,' he says. 'It's not his usual territory. But I could see he knew stuff and was having a good time.' He was particularly interested in watching goalie David James take on the challenge. 'Sportspeople's brains just work differently. It was enjoyable to watch.' For a decade, Shaun was known for his EastEnders character, the hapless Barry Evans. In the BBC One drama, the car dealer appeared to have found long-lasting love in the form of Janine Butcher. Little did he know she only had eyes for his fortune as she pushed him off a cliff during an argument, leaving him to die shortly after. Since his 2004 exit from the London-based drama, Shaun has starred in a multitude of dramas from The Bill to Casualty and Holby City - but he's also shown off his quizzing skills in Al Murray 's Great British Pub Quiz and Beat The Chasers: Celebrity Special. In this brand new show, Jeremy plays quizmaster and referee as team captains Carol Vorderman and Sally Lindsay take on mind-bending mental challenges alongside a rotating cast of celebrity guests. Each episode sees a fresh pair of famous faces join the fray - Gareth Malone and Ore Oduba start us off, with Scarlett Moffatt, Stephen Bailey, Melvin Odoom, Miles Jupp, Dom Joly and more queuing up to flex their grey matter. Jeremy says he often found himself 'constantly' itching to join in. 'I didn't always have the answers,' he says, 'But I quickly realised that, as the quiz master, you feel locked out. You can't shout the answer out. That's the price you pay for watching these competitors do battle.' Celebrity Puzzling's six-round structure keeps things lively, but one segment in particular gave Carol a headache: Cinema Cypher, where film titles are hidden behind a string of symbols. 'I found it hard because I had to go backwards,' she says, 'I'm absolutely rubbish with movie titles. I know The Godfather series, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars but I couldn't tell you what their names are, though I've probably seen all of those multiple times.' She came unstuck when trying to work out School of Rock. 'I thought of all the movies I knew and tried to make them fit,' she admits, 'I forced it rather than trying to work it out. I didn't know the movie title.' But she revelled in the challenge. 'That's the worst thing I did but I really enjoyed trying to work it out,' she says. For Carol, however, the biggest novelty wasn't the puzzles - it was being a captain. 'I can't remember ever being a team captain before and I really enjoyed it,' she says. 'This was interesting because I was with Scarlett Morfatt on one show and then Paul Sinna another show. In terms of general knowledge, that's vast - Paul is one of the top quizzers in the country!' But what makes the show shine is its clever tailoring: questions are curated for the guests' strengths. 'The questions were totally geared to those celebs,' says Carol, 'I didn't know pop bands but Scarlett did. It was brilliantly done.' Her long-standing friendship with Sally Lindsay added an extra layer of warmth to filming. 'Sally is just a joy,' she says, 'She's actually one of my best friends so it was a joy to be with her even though the way our brains work is different. We're both Northern, feisty women and we like a laugh. So I loved being in that studio.' Carol's lifelong love of puzzles runs deep. 'I've always loved puzzles. When I was a child, I used to buy old maths books,' she remembers, 'They were my puzzles. I would sit at home with my pencil and go against the clock. Chess is one of the big ones.' That passion led her to hosting the 1993 world chess match between Garry Kasparov and Nigel Short. It was the Kremlin's first ever commercial event - a speed chess championship. These days, she's a devoted Sudoku fan, happily losing herself in grids during long train rides back to Bristol from filming.
