MNS leaders clash with PMC commissioner over protocol breach
The civic headquarters witnessed high drama on Wednesday after former Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) corporator, advocate Kishore Shinde, and a group of party workers allegedly stormed into an official meeting held by Pune municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram. MNS workers, including former corporator Kishore Shinde (red top) were taken away by police after causing a ruckus at the Pune Municipal Corporation HQ on Wednesday. (MAHENDRA KOLHE/HT PHOTO) The incident occurred at around 5 pm when Shinde and group entered unannounced the room where the commissioner was holding a meeting related to solid waste management. According to civic officials, the delegation had come to submit a letter regarding items missing from the commissioner's official bungalow. Reportedly, commissioner Ram asked them to leave saying in Hindi, 'Who are you? Please go out'. Shinde objected to the use of Hindi and demanded that the commissioner speak in Marathi, asserting his position as a former corporator and two-time assembly election candidate. This triggered a heated exchange, with Shinde alleging that the commissioner called them 'goons'. In protest, the MNS group staged a sit-in outside the office. The police were called to control the situation, and the protesters were later detained. Following the incident, the police have filed an FIR against the MNS leaders. A senior police official said that a case was filed late evening against Shinde and the others under section 132 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) which deals with assault or use of force against a public servant on duty. The police said that the section was applied due to the serious nature of the confrontation. Ram told the media, 'They entered without permission and disrupted an ongoing meeting. They insisted I speak in Marathi and threatened to throw me out of Maharashtra. This is a serious breach of protocol. I have lodged a police complaint.' Shinde, however, denied the allegations. 'We were waiting outside and simply asked about the meeting schedule. Instead, we were insulted, called goons, and our phones were snatched. We will not back down. Let the CCTV footage and mobile videos speak for themselves,' he said. Later, senior MNS leaders Babu Waghaskar, Ranjit Shirole and Sainath Babar met the commissioner to discuss the matter. Heavy police deployment at PMC office After the incident, there was heavy police deployment at the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) office. Commissioner Ram contacted the police commissioner following which, the deputy commissioner of police, senior inspectors, and other officers rushed to the spot. All main gates of the PMC building were shut. Even the gates to the commissioner's office were closed due to which, many people got stuck inside. The situation normalised after around 7 pm. By late evening, several MNS workers were taken into custody. Frequent faceoffs: Political aggression inside PMC continues The latest incident involving MNS leader Kishor Shinde is part of a pattern of disruptive protests by political leaders within the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), often under the pretext of raising public concerns. In February 2014, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporators protested the city's garbage crisis by dumping waste on the table of then municipal commissioner Vikas Deshmukh. The BJP leaders, including Anil Shirole and Mukta Tilak, carried trash bags into the PMC building and staged a protest targeting the then Nationalist Congress Party/NCP-Congress administration. In September 2006, former MLA Deepak Paigude and 10 MNS workers barged into then commissioner Nitin Kareer's office, locked the doors from inside, and held him hostage for over two hours demanding written assurances on road repairs. The police arrested all participants after the protest ended. In February 2019, Congress corporator (now with the Shiv Sena Shinde faction) Ravindra Dhangekar allegedly got into a physical altercation with additional commissioner Rajendra Nimbalkar during a protest over water hyacinth in the city's lakes. The incident occurred inside the mayor's cabin, and a police case was filed. Dhangekar and others were remanded to one-day police custody. These recurring confrontations have raised concerns over growing political interference in civic functioning and the safety of administrative officers.

Shinde meets Modi, targets Uddhav on INDIA bloc talks as both Sena chiefs signal national alignments
In what is being seen as symbolism and political posturing, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde on Wednesday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi and reaffirmed his party's ties with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). At a time when Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray was also in New Delhi, Shinde attacked the former for aligning with the INDIA bloc and exploring a tie-up with the MNS ahead of civic body polls. While Shinde and his family met PM Modi at the latter's official residence, Uddhav and his son Aaditya Thackeray were in the national capital scheduled to attend an INDIA bloc meeting on Thursday. The presence of both Sena chiefs in Delhi — with each meeting their respective alliance partners — served as a clear reflection of their sharpening political identities and positioning at the national level. Sources also confirmed that Shinde had a closed-door 30-minute meeting with PM Modi without aides, during which state-related issues and electoral strategy were discussed. 'We took the path of Lok Kalyan Marg shown by Balasaheb, they went to 10 Janpath,' Shinde said after meeting the PM. 'That clearly shows who is following Balasaheb Thackeray's ideology. People of the country are are doing things Balasaheb never approved of,' he said, launching a scathing attack on Uddhav. Shinde also emphasized that the Shiv Sena was the fourth largest ally of the NDA. He accused Uddhav of 'sailing in two boats' by holding talks with INDIA bloc leaders while simultaneously keeping the door open for an alliance with Raj Thackeray's MNS. 'Only someone who has lost confidence in himself does that. In a democracy, everyone has the right to form alliances and coalitions. However, some people, having lost the trust of the public and are trying to balance on two stones,' he said in a veiled reference to Uddhav. 'People vote for those who work; those who sit at home are kept at home by the public,' he said. 'When Veer Savarkar was being insulted, they remained silent because they abandoned Hindutva,' Shinde said. Taking another swipe, he added, 'Shiv Sena is a party for public welfare, while their group is a private limited company.' During the meeting with PM, Shinde, accompanied by his wife Lata Shinde, son and MP Dr Shrikant Shinde, and daughter-in-law Vrushali Shinde, presented PM Modi with a specially commissioned painting of Lord Mahadev, crafted by acclaimed artist Kishor Nandivdekar. The gift, Shinde said, symbolised the successful 'Operation Sindoor' and 'Operation Mahadev', India's retaliatory strikes against the perpetrators of the Pahalgam terror attack. 'Just as Lord Mahadev vanquished evil, our armed forces under the Prime Minister's leadership eliminated the terrorists,' he said. The painting, he added, was a tribute to that national effort and resolve. Earlier in the day, Shinde met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and praised him for becoming the longest-serving Home Minister in the country's history. 'He fulfilled Balasaheb Thackeray's dream by abrogating Article 370, crushed terrorism through Operation Mahadev, and strengthened the cooperative sector. His leadership is decisive and efficient,' Shinde said. Reiterating his Sena's political stand, Shinde announced that the Shiv Sena will support the NDA's candidate in the upcoming vice-presidential election and contest local body polls in Maharashtra as part of the Mahayuti alliance. 'Just like we fought the Assembly elections together, we'll go into civic polls united,' he said. Shinde used the occasion to question Uddhav Thackeray's Hindutva credentials, accusing him of abandoning the ideology and remaining silent on insults to Veer Savarkar. 'They gave up Hindutva. They stayed silent when Savarkar was insulted. That's why people won't stand by them,' he said. Targeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Shinde added, 'Questioning the Army's bravery, defaming India and the PM abroad, speaking the language of Pakistan — is not patriotism but love for Pakistan.' Meanwhile, Uddhav Thackeray's camp maintained its engagement with the INDIA alliance and met NCP(SP) chief Sharad Pawar in New Delhi. A day earlier, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi met PM Modi, though both sides termed it a courtesy call. Uddhav is expected to join Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders for a strategy dinner ahead of the bloc's formal meeting. In a separate development, Shinde addressed public concerns over the relocation of a 36-year-old elephant named Madhuri from a Jain Math in Maharashtra to Gujarat's Vantara centre. He said the state government would file a review petition in the Supreme Court. 'The government respects public sentiment. Both Maharashtra and Vantara will be parties to the case,' he said.

MNS workers barge into cabin of Pune civic chief; cops to register offence
Last Updated: Pune, Aug 6 (PTI) A high drama unfolded at Pune Municipal Corporation on Wednesday evening when a former corporator of MNS and his supporters barged into the cabin of civic chief Navalkishore Ram when he was addressing a meeting. The situation escalated when Ram allegedly told the ex-corporator Kishore Shinde to leave his office in Hindi, prompting Shinde to object and demand that Ram speak in Marathi. As the situation escalated, security personnel escorted Shinde and his supporters out of the office. They were later taken to Shivajinagar police station. Police are registering an offence against Shinde and other party members under section 132 (Assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita. Shinde and his supporters reached the municipal commissioner's office to hand over a memorandum seeking clarification on media reports that claimed some items from the official residence of the PMC chief had gone missing before Ram shifted there. 'I was busy in a meeting when some people ( including Shinde) barged into the cabin. I was talking to him in Marathi and questioned his behaviour, and told him to go out in Hindi. He picked up that one line and created a Marathi-Hindi issue. He also threatened me and tried to heckle me. His behaviour was highly objectionable and unruly," Ram told PTI. The municipal commissioner alleged that Shinde entered the cabin with a plan to create a ruckus. 'I've worked in Maharashtra for many years, but I have never seen such behaviour," Ram added. Shinde, however, claimed that Ram called him a 'MNS goon". When asked whether he heckled Ram, Shinde said one can check the CCTV footage. MNS functionaries claimed they went to the PMC commissioner's office to demand an inquiry into the 'missing" household items in the official residence of the civic chief located in Model Colony. Ram, however, claimed that Shinde and other workers were not carrying any documents or memorandum when they stormed into his cabin. Ram stated that he had ordered an inquiry into the alleged disappearance of household items, including antique lamps, chandeliers, an air-conditioned unit, and television sets. Ram's predecessor Rajendra Bhosale occupied the official residence before his retirement. PTI SPK NSK view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
