Reports: Kevin Durant to wear No. 7 jersey with Rockets

USA Today2 days ago
Kevin Durant, who recently joined Houston via trade, will reportedly wear the No. 7 jersey with the Rockets. He last wore that number with the Brooklyn Nets.
Over his distinguished NBA career, perennial All-Star forward Kevin Durant has worn the No. 35 jersey with three teams (the Oklahoma City Thunder, Golden State Warriors, and the Phoenix Suns) and the No. 7 jersey with one team (the Brooklyn Nets).
Starting in 2025-26, it appears the former Most Valuable Player (MVP) and future Hall of Famer will bring that discrepancy closer to parity.
Durant is expected to wear the No. 7 jersey with the Rockets, who are officially his new team after the blockbuster trade became official earlier this week. Durant is reuniting in Houston with head coach Ime Udoka, who he previously worked with during that Brooklyn stint.
News of Durant wearing No. 7 was strongly hinted at Sunday by his agent and business partner, Rich Kleiman, and subsequently confirmed by NBA numbers guru Etienne Catalan.
The No. 7 jersey has a long history of use by the Rockets, with 16 different players having worn it throughout franchise history. In the 1990s, Carl Herrera wore it as part of two NBA championship teams in 1994 and 1995.
The 2000s list included the likes of David Wesley, Mike James, and Kyle Lowry, while the 2010s featured big-name players such as Jeremy Lin, Joe Johnson, and Carmelo Anthony.
Most recently, in the 2020s, the list has included Victor Oladipo and Cam Whitmore. And starting this fall, Durant will seemingly join it.
Beyond the Nets, Durant also wore the No. 7 jersey during his last two Olympics stints (2021 and 2024), which featured gold-medal runs for the U.S. men's basketball national team. Durant is the leading scorer in Team USA's Olympic history.

Rays slugger Junior Caminero to compete in Home Run Derby, start at third base in All-Star Game

Associated Press Rays slugger Junior Caminero announced Wednesday that he will take part in the Home Run Derby on Monday night in Atlanta, then learned hours later that he would start at third base for the AL squad in the All-Star Game the following night. In between, Caminero merely belted his 22nd homer of the season in the seventh inning of a 7-3 win in Detroit. Caminero, who turned 22 on July 5, leads all AL third basemen in homers in what has been a breakout season. He is hitting .254 and driven in 58 runs for the Rays, who moved within four games of Toronto in the AL East on Wednesday night. 'I'm going to put on a show. I'm going to try to put on a show just to give the fans the opportunity to get to know me, see my power,' Caminero said. 'Just being there with all those other All-Stars, it's going to be something very special.' Caminero is the sixth player to commit to the Home Run Derby, joining the Mariners' Cal Raleigh, James Wood of the Nationals, Byron Buxton of the Twins, the Pirates' Oneil Cruz and Ronald Acuna Jr. of the hosting Braves. Two more contestants are still to be announced, and Buxton's status is unclear after he was hit in the left hand in Wednesday night's win over the Cubs. Caminero was picked earlier this week as the All-Star replacement for Boston's Alex Bregman, who has been dealing with a strained right quadriceps. He learned he would start at third base after Wednesday night's game after Cleveland's José Ramírez opted out of the Midsummer Classic so that he could rest an ailing Achilles tendon. Astros third baseman Isaac Paredes was chosen to replace Ramírez on the AL roster. The only Rays players besides Caminero to participate in the Home Run Derby have been Evan Longoria, Carlos Pena and Randy Arozarena, who reached the finals two years ago before losing to Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. 'We get to see (Caminero) do probably a modified Home Run Derby every time he takes batting practice. I'm excited for him. I'm excited for his family,' Rays manager Kevin Cash said. 'Somewhat of a coming-out party for him. Hopefully, he gets the recognition that we've all seen in the talent and the ability to hit the ball a long way.' ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 2

All-Stars Abbott, De La Cruz help Reds beat Marlins 7-2, halt Miami's 11-game road winning streak

CINCINNATI (AP) — Andrew Abbott pitched seven innings of shutout ball a day after being named an All-Star, Elly De La Cruz hit a pair of RBI doubles and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Marlins 7-2 on Wednesday night, snapping Miami's franchise-record 11-game road winning streak. Abbott (8-1) was named to the NL All-Star team on Tuesday, replacing Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Against Miami, Abbott allowed one run on six hits and two walks while striking out five. The 26-year-old left-hander lost his shutout bid and left the game when Heriberto Hernández hit a two-out RBI single in the eighth. The Reds ended a four-game skid. The Reds scored three runs in the first and fourth innings with De La Cruz hitting RBI doubles in each. Noelvi Marte hit a two-run homer, his fourth of the season, in the fourth. Will Benson added his eighth homer in the eighth. Reds manager Terry Francona moved within three wins of his 2,000th career victory as a manager. Miami's Sandy Alcantara (4-9) gave up nine hits and six runs over five innings. Connor Norby hit his sixth homer of the year off Emilio Pagán in the ninth. Key moment De La Cruz sparked a three-run first inning with an RBI double to get the Reds on the board. Austin Hays and Tyler Stephenson added RBI hits, and the Reds never looked back. Key stat Abbott has given up more than one earned run in just three of his 16 starts this season. Up next Miami's Cal Quantrill (3-7, 5.40) pitches against Cincinnati's Nick Lodolo (5-6, 3.58) on Thursday. ___ AP MLB:
