It feels as though the last Soweto derby was just the other day. Now, here we are, on the eve of back-to-back derbies that could defy the season for both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
This weekend, the two rivals go head-to-head in a crucial league encounter at the FNB Stadium with both teams desperate to pick up the maximum three points for separate reasons.
For Ezimnyama ngenkani ezikamagebhula, a win on Saturday will keep them within touching distance of league leaders and perennial kings of South African football, Mamelodi Sundowns.
On top of that, the Sea Robbers will want to ensure that departing head coach Jose Riveiro has something to remember about his final season with the club. In three seasons under the Spaniard, Pirates have won back-to-back cup doubles and are well on course to match that this campaign.

And with the league title so close for a change, they could even surpass their achievements of the last two years by bagging a league crown for the first time since 2012.
The players will be hurting that they couldn't advance to the final of the CAF Champions League, and Saturday's clash against the old rival will be the perfect opportunity for them get over their disappointment.
In the updated Betway Premiership table, Pirates trail Sundowns by nine points. Crucially, they have two games in hand, which represents a potential six points. While games in hand don't always translate to points in the bag, they could give Riveiro's men a target to aim for.
Pirates' mettle will be severely tested this weekend against an opponent that wants to win for different reasons.
When Nasreddine Nabi was brought in as the club's new coach at the beginning of the season, they wanted an improvement from the previous campaign, where the club struggled and finished outside of the top eight.
In Nabi's first year in charge, there hasn't been much change. Sure, there have been glimpses that they can improve, but they have been few and far between. With three games left to play, Chiefs are very desperate for any points they can pick up.
If they don't show any improvement from where they were last season, it will make Nabi's position at the club very difficult.
To make things worse, it was reported earlier in the week that Wandile Duba, one of the club's creative playmakers, will be unavailable for selection as he serves a one-match suspension after being given a fourth yellow card.
Both teams will be facing different kinds of pressure this weekend. Whoever wins will surely be the favourite to go on and win the Nedbank Cup final in Durban seven days later.
With pride, silverware, and season-defining momentum all on the line, this Soweto derby carries weight far beyond the usual bragging rights. It's more than just a match — it's a moment that could tip the scales for two of South Africa's most iconic clubs.
As the FNB Stadium prepares to host another chapter of this fierce rivalry, expect fireworks, passion, and the kind of drama only the derby can deliver.
Whatever the outcome, Saturday will send ripples through the remainder of the season.

Mbule could be good for Chiefs, but must change his ways: ‘Disco' Makua

Would it be worthwhile for Kaizer Chiefs to sign Sipho Mbule despite his well-known off-field troubles? After his agent Mike Makaab publicly declared he had offered the troublesome playmaker to Chiefs, Amakhosi midfield legend Frank 'Disco' Makua endorsed the possible recruitment, but warned the wayward star will have to change his behaviour. Mbule's off-field misdemeanours have been well-documented since he emerged at SuperSport United, with Sekhukhune United the latest club to reject him after Mamelodi Sundowns dispatched him there on loan. The 27-year-old midfielder is without a club after Downs opted not to renew his contract, prompting Makaab, in a bizarre social media post, to declare the talented but sometimes wayward midfielder had been 'offered to Chiefs'.

Multilingual Donald Ramphadi out of French Open singles

South Africa's quad wheelchair competitor Donald Ramphadi is out of the 2025 French Open after losing to Dutch opponent Sam Schröder 6-0, 6-3. Ramphadi reflected on what a tough match it was for him and how he expected a better performance. 'It definitely was a tough one. Obviously, I know I should have done better.' Ramphadi lost the first set 6-0 and he described giving Schröder what he wanted. 'Going into the first set, I think I gave him what he wanted. He likes lower balls, and that's what he was getting most of the time.' After being bagled, Ramphadi deciding to change his tactics. 'Towards the end of the match is where I started changing it a bit to give him more higher balls, so he had to reach higher. As it's something that he doesn't like. 'In the second set I tried to hit the ball more to his backhand. 'I think I really played better in the second set.' Ramphadi acknowledged that he was beaten by the better player, but appreciated that his performance was below par. 'He played well. 'Obviously, I can do better.' It was not all doom and goom for the South African. 'I feel great how I played him. Especially in the second set.' At last year's Paralympic Games in Paris, Ramphadi won the bronze medal with his doubles partner Lucas Sithole. It was the first time Donald Ramphadi had been back in Paris since that unforgettable occasion. 'I call this a magical place. Anything can happen here. 'I'm still involved in the doubles with (Ahmet) Kaplan from Turkey. 'This is our second Grand Slam together.' Ramphadi described that they are still getting to know each other's game. 'We are still working on getting an understanding of how we both play. We can try and understand each other more. 'We still need to have a good conversation to see if we can play more tournaments together.' An interesting side note about Ramphadi is that he speaks seven languages: English, South Africa Sign Language, Sepedi, Tsonga, Venda, Zulu and Swazi. After the conclusion of the French Open, Ramphadi will head home to South Africa for three weeks to catch up with his family. 'Limpopo is my hood.' Ramphadi is a man of many talents. Hopefully his tennis talents can propel to him to even more greater heights. 'They are a great club': Rulani Mokwena responds to Chiefs links

Former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has shut down rumours linking him to Kaizer Chiefs. The 38-year-old coach is a free agent after recently parting ways with Wydad Casablanca. Mokwena only spent close to 10 months in Morocco before returning to South Africa Robert Marawa on Marawa Sports Worldwide , Rulani was asked if he'd consider coaching Chiefs. 'It can't be about Kaizer Chiefs because they've got a coach,' he said. 'And I think coach Nabi has, I've said it and I'll say it again, I've spent some time now, because I've missed South African football, and I'm using this time to catch-up, so I'm watching a lot of South African games – I've finished the whole competition of the Nedbank Cup. 'And I must say that I was really impressed with how Kaizer Chiefs went on to win the Nedbank Cup, beating Stellenbosch, beating Sundowns, beating Pirates – at a time when there was a lot of noise, a lot of doubts, a lot of pressure on the coach and his staff, and to do that is not very easy,' said Mokwena. 'Of course it's a great a club, it's of course got the pressure of doing well also in the domestic league but I think that winning the Nedbank Cup and delivering the first title [in 10 years], and the way they did it, not only just winning it but the way they did it, beating other big teams, I think coach Nabi has earned credit. 'Sometimes as coaches we need that, we need credit sometimes. And I think he's earned the credit to be given an opportunity to continue to resurrect Kaizer Chiefs,' Rulani added.
