The Globe's Top 20 boys' tennis poll
There's little movement this week in the Globe Top 20 boys' tennis poll, with most of the state's top teams cruising down the backstretch of the regular season.
St. John's Prep stayed unbeaten and atop the poll. Third-ranked Brookline put together an impressive week, notching a 3-2 victory over No. 6 Newton North on Wednesday, and then handling No. 10 Duxbury, 4-1, in nonleague action on Saturday.

Next week should bring more clarity to the Division 1 postseason landscape, with No. 5 Concord-Carlisle set to face No. 4 Lexington and No. 2 Acton-Boxborough consecutively (on Tuesday and Wednesday) to close out the regular season.
The only new entrant into the poll is No. 17 Wellesley, which posted three consecutive wins to conclude the week, highlighted by a 4-1 triumph over Weston on Tuesday.
The MIAA tournament seedings and pairings will be released on Friday. Records based on scores reported to the Globe.

Rob Gronkowski celebrates opening of Gronk Park

While Alyssa may not have recognized the former Patriots tight end, lots of others did. On Tuesday morning, Gronkowski unveiled the $2 million Gronk Playground on the Charles River Esplanade, a fully ADA-accessible space for inclusive play. Funded by his Gronk Nation Youth Foundation in partnership with the Esplanade Association and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, the playground features a slide with a football-shaped climbing structure and scaled-down Boston landmarks for kids to clamber up and swing from. Even when he's not here in person, Gronk will still greet visitors — in the form of a life-sized figure standing in the middle of the playground with a hand outstretched for high-fives. Related : Advertisement Families and children from Make a Wish Foundation and Hill House joined by Governor Maura Healey, Patriots owner Robert Kraft, and family and friends of Gronkowski turned out to celebrate the opening. Collette Padilla, 8, from Framingham, pushed a swing with her feet on opening day at the Gronk Park on Tuesday. David L Ryan/ Globe Staff The playground stirred memories for Gronkowski's father, Gordon, who remembered growing up with a playground just steps from his own backyard in Buffalo, NY. But for his own sons, who grew up in a different neighborhood near Buffalo, he explained, it was different. Advertisement 'They didn't have a playground close by,' Gordon Gronkowski said in an interview during the event. 'I think that's probably why Rob wanted this so much, because he never had a playground like this.' The former Patriot echoed his father's memories, recalling that while the Gronkowski brothers didn't spend much time on playgrounds, they had their own fun. 'No, we didn't [have a playground],' he said. 'But we had each other. We played backyard sports, ice hockey in the basement, mini sticks, pickup basketball, all that good stuff. Today is a special moment. It all came together over the last five years. To see the smiles on the kids' faces, that's what it's just truly all about.' Rob Gronkowski (rear center), with Bob Kraft (on far left) and Governor Maura Healey (far right), celebrated the opening of Gronk Playground — a fully ADA-accessible destination for inclusive play and youth fitness on the Charles River Esplanade. David L Ryan/ Globe Staff Natalia Boidi, 8, who uses a wheelchair, was happy about the playground's accessible features. 'I was so excited to finally get to be in this playground and get to do all the things that other kids do,' Natalia said. 'It's very exciting because the school playground is not that accessible.' Her favorite things to do on a playground are to go on the swings. Her mother, Marisa, echoed her daughter's words. 'I wish there were more of these around,' she said. 'There have been so many times where we've missed out on playdates or birthday parties because playgrounds aren't always accessible. Sometimes you can't even push a wheelchair through them, let alone have a swing or something you can use. So this is amazing, and we're very grateful.' Camille Kostek, Gronkowski's longtime partner, recalled the playground's early beginnings around their kitchen table 'five or six years ago,' when Susan Hurley, founder of CharityTeams and a driving force in Gronkowski's foundation work, first sketched out the idea. Advertisement 'The next meetings turned into blueprints,' she recalled, 'and then one day I was driving past Storrow Drive and saw bulldozers breaking ground.' 'I don't think there's a better way for his legacy to live on in the city of champions,' she said. 'Rob is a big kid at heart.' Rob Gronkowski spiked the ball at the opening for Gronk Playground. playground opening on August 19, 2025. David L Ryan/ Globe Staff Gronkowski tried the football slide himself alongside some of the children, tumbling down before capping it off with his signature Gronk spike. In her opening remarks, Hurley recalled looking out a window of the MGH Ellison Building while battling ovarian cancer earlier this year and watching the playground being built from her room. She happened to be on the same floor as Gronkowski when he was recovering from football-related injuries in 2013. 'Coincidence? I think not,' she said. During the ceremony, she also playfully urged Kraft to sign Gronkowski to a one-day contract so he could retire officially as a Patriot. Kraft gave a thumbs up, and Gronkowski later told reporters he'd happily do it — not for himself, but for Hurley. 'Susan, you got us to the other side with this playground, and we are thankful for you,' Gronkowski said. 'It won't just be my legacy carried here in the city of Boston forever, it will be yours as well.' Governor Healey threw the football to kids at the opening of Gronk Playground. David L Ryan/ Globe Staff To honor their impact, two elm trees in the playground carry plaques: one for Kraft, and one for Hurley. 'This is where I started my career, and this will be a home for life,' Gronkowski said. Sadaf Tokhi can be reached at

20 days until Saints season opener: Every player to wear No. 20

From Delles Howell and Terry Allen to Jay Bellamy and Pete Werner Just 20 days separate us from the 2025 New Orleans Saints season opening game at home against the Arizona Cardinals. Pete Werner wears No. 20 for the Saints, entering his fifth year at linebacker. The No. 20 doesn't have any superstars in New Orleans history, but boasted some key performers even before Werner. Here is a look at the entire list. Saints' History of No. 20 George Youngblood joined the 1967 inaugural New Orleans squad to be their first player to wear No. 20, but suited up for only five games over their first two seasons. Carroll, Louisiana and Grambling State star Delles Howell was also the first Saints draft pick to wear No. 20 as a Round 4 choice in the 1970 draft. Howell played three seasons with the team, intercepting 9 passes during that time. He was also one of seven out of the 17 players who wore No. 20 as a Saint to do so for more than two years. Another of those seven was Russell Gary, a second-round choice in the 1981 NFL draft. With the 29th overall pick, Gary also holds the distinction of being the highest-drafted player by the Saints to wear the No. 20 jersey. Over his six years with New Orleans, Gary appeared in 62 games and had 7 interceptions with 3 fumbles recovered. Until likely being surpassed by Werner this year, Gary also has the second-most games played in the No. 20 uniform for New Orleans. After Gary came five players to wear No. 20 over the next 15 years, with only running back Derek Brown wearing it longer than one season. Also the first offensive player to wear a No. 20 jersey for the Saints, Brown was a fourth-round pick in 1993 who wore three numbers in four years with the franchise. No. 20 was worn by him in 1995 and 1996, his last two years in the league, when he gained a combined 509 scrimmage yards and scored 2 touchdowns. Terry Allen may have been the most notable name to wear the No. 20 in New Orleans' past, coming to the Saints after eight highly productive years with the Minnesota Vikings, Washington Redskins, and New England Patriots. Allen played in only four contests for New Orleans, rushing for 179 yards and 2 scores. He's also the last offensive player to wear No. 20 for the Saints. Jay Bellamy had an underrated 14-year NFL career. The last seven of those were with the Saints, with his 81 games the longest stint in franchise history for anyone who has worn No. 20. During his time in New Orleans, Bellamy had 9 interceptions while breaking up 31 passes, forcing 3 fumbles, and recording 4.5 sacks with 20 tackles for loss. Former LSU standout Randall Gay replaced Bellamy in the defensive backfield and in No. 20 in 2008. Gay was with the team for three years and had just 1 interception, but broke up 20 throws and recording 2 sacks. In the latter half of the last decade, the Saints had two corners who wore No. 20 that have vastly different views from the fan base. Ken Crawley made the team as an undrafted rookie in 2016, then was thrust into a larger role because of injuries and lack of talent on the back end. Crawley wore No. 46 upon his arrival to the Saints, switching to No. 20 in his second year before wearing No. 25 in his second stint with the team. In the No. 20 jersey, Crawley had an interception and 23 passes broken up but was also often targeted by opponents with success. Janoris "Jackrabbit" Jenkins had much greater success in an albeit short stretch in New Orleans. Jenkins helped fortify an already strong Saints secondary upon his arrival. In his two years with New Orleans, Jackrabbit had 4 interceptions, one touchdown return, 15 passes broken up, and allowed less than 60% completion rate when targeted. For the last four years, the owner of the No. 20 jersey for the Saints has been Pete Werner. A second round choice from the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2021, Werner has been a steady, if unspectacular, presence in the middle of the New Orleans defense. He'll need to make more big plays, but few are more instinctive against the run or around the line of scrimmage. A key figure for the Saints as they rebuild a once strong defense, Werner is well on his way to being the best New Orleans player to wear No. 20.
