Puri turns into fortress for Rath Yatra
Puri: These aside pilgrim town of Puri on Wednesday turned into a fortress with around 10,000 security personnel deployed for the annual Rath Yatra celebrations of Lord Jagannath on June 27. Besides, over 250 Artificial Intelligence-enabled cameras have been installed at various places in the town for surveillance.
The security personnel, including those of Central Armed Forces, participated in a rehearsal to prepare themselves to handle lakhs of devotees who will arrive in the town from every nook and cranny of the country and abroad to get a glimpse of the trinity, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath. The deities come out of the 12th-century shrine to mingle with devotees cutting across caste, creed and religion once a year.
As this year's Rath Yatra celebration will be held post-Pahalgam terror attack, security arrangements have been made keeping different aspects in view. 'An Integrated Command and Control Room has been set up in Puri for the first time. Around 275 AI-enabled CCTV cameras have been installed along the route between Uttara Chhak and Puri town and between Puri and Konark.
The live visuals from these cameras will be monitored round the clock,' Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) Y B Khurania said after giving the final touch to the security arrangements made for the mega festival. Khurania said the AI-powered surveillance system will keep watch on traffic movements, crowd surge and help security personnel make a prompt decision and face emergencies. Sub-control rooms have also been set up at key locations, the DGP said. For the first time, NSG (National Security Guard) snipers have been deployed on the rooftops of buildings given the threat assessment, while anti-drone technology and police-operated drones will be in use for aerial surveillance, the DGP said, adding that anti-sabotage teams, bomb squads and dog squads are also in place.
The 10,000 security personnel deployed for the festival comprises Odisha Police and eight companies of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF). To ensure foolproof security on sea front, arrangements have been made with deployment of Odisha's Marine Police, Coast Guard and Indian Navy, he said.
A real-time chatbot application has also been launched to assist visitors with information on parking availability, route maps and directions to vacant parking spaces, Khurania said.
Expecting congregation of around 15 lakh people on day one and two of the festival, DGP Khurania emphasised that priority will be given to proper service and security of the devotees. 'Extensive arrangements have been made for the orderly 'darshan' of the devotees. Experienced police officers have been deployed for Rath Yatra duty,' he said.
The Director of Intelligence, R P Koche, said since Shri Jagannath temple is located in a high-security zone, its importance increases significantly during the Rath Yatra. Besides, special security arrangements have been made for Sri Gundicha temple and the three chariots, Koche said.
The Additional Director General (ADG) of Police (Modernisation), Soumendra Priyadarshi, said appropriate arrangements have been made to control the crowd.
ADG (Law and Order) Sanjay Kumar said the cooperation of the officers/staff of the police administration is essential for the orderly completion of the Rath Yatra.
Shree Jagannath's Rath Yatra will begin on June 27 and end on July 8 with deities returning to the main shrine.

Navy staffer held for leaking Operation Sindoor details, other classified info to Pakistani handler
An Indian Navy staffer posted in naval headquarters in Delhi was arrested in Jaipur for allegedly leaking defence-related sensitive information to a Pakistani handler in exchange for money, a police official said on Thursday (June 26, 2025). Vishal Yadav, an Upper Division Clerk (UDC) in the Directorate of Dockyard at the Navy building, allegedly also shared details on Operation Sindoor — strikes carried out by the Indian Armed Forces in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. Inspector General of Police (CID-Security) Vishnu Kant Gupta said Yadav, originally from Rewari in Haryana, leaked the classified information to a female Pakistani handler posing as an Indian woman. He was arrested on Wednesday in Jaipur and will be subjected to a joint probe by multiple agencies. "Yadav confessed to receiving approximately ₹2 lakh in total for the information he passed on," Mr. Gupta said. "This included ₹50,000 for leaking information related to Operation Sindoor," the IGP said, adding some of the payments were also made in cryptocurrency. Intelligence sources revealed that Yadav was first approached on Facebook. The Pakistani handler sent a friend request under the fake identity "Priya Sharma". The two started communicating regularly and eventually shifted to WhatsApp and later to Telegram, a platform known for its encryption-enabled messages. Police said that Yadav initially received small payments of ₹5,000-₹6,000 for lower-grade information. However, the handler allegedly encouraged him to provide more valuable intelligence in exchange for higher compensation. That's when Yadav began sharing critical defence-related data. "He was lured by money and ended up leaking sensitive information from the Navy headquarters," Mr. Gupta said. "After monitoring his social media activity and confirming his links with a Pakistani handler, he was detained in Jaipur for joint interrogation involving multiple national agencies," the IGP said. Yadav, originally from Punsika village in Haryana's Rewari district, is also reported to be addicted to online gaming, which authorities believe may have made him more vulnerable to such traps. Police said the forensic examination of Yadav's mobile phone reportedly uncovered extensive evidence, including financial transactions, sensitive messages, and confidential defence data exchanged with the handler. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are probing his cryptocurrency transactions and connections. IG Gupta emphasised that Pakistani intelligence agencies are using increasingly sophisticated methods to extract strategic information. "We are keeping a constant watch on such activities, and this arrest is a result of sustained monitoring and timely action," he said.

No theft of ‘modak' from Puri temple
Bhubaneswar: Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan clarified that there was no theft of 'modak' from the Jagannath temple in Puri as alleged by a section of servitors. 'Modak' is a special type of 'ladoo' offered to the deities of the temple as part of one of the rituals ahead of the Rath Yatra festival. 'There was no theft of 'modak' from the temple as per the information given by Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) chief administrator Arabinda Padhee,' the minister said on Tuesday. As the controversy surfaced, Padhee ordered an inquiry by the SJTA officials which found that there was no theft of 'modak'. A group of 'Vaidya sevak' (Ayurvedic doctors) supply 'modak' to the temple during the Lord's 'Anasar' period when it was believed that the deities fell ill. It is also believed that the deities get cured after having 'modak'. The controversy began when Haladhar Das Mohapatra, the 'Badagrahi' (bodyguard) of Lord Balabhadra, claimed that 70 out of 313 'modaks' stored under tight security were missing. As the 'modak' was stolen, its sanctity was lost. He lodged a formal complaint with SJTA. Talking to reporters, Padhee also rejected the allegations of theft.

Stay away from social media, drugs, SP warns girl students
Kothacheruvu: District Superintendent of Police V Ratna urged girl students to excel equally in all fields while staying away from the distractions of social media and harmful addictions. She advised students to focus on education and build a bright future without falling prey to temporary attractions or bad influences, at an awareness programme on 'Eagle Clubs' and 'Shakti App' organised at Zilla Parishad Girls High School in Kottacheruvu on Wednesday. As part of the government's initiative, Shakti Groups and Eagle Clubs have been established at the school. On this occasion, SP Ratna created awareness among the students about critical issues such as child marriages, teenage infatuation, drug abuse, and cannabis consumption. Addictive substances like cannabis lead to crime and destroy lives, she warned. Students, especially girls, should stay away from platforms like Facebook and Instagram, particularly during their academic years. Girls under the age of 18 should be especially careful and focus on academics without falling for temptations. She emphasised that love and attraction at a young age can derail students' focus, urging them to prioritise education instead. She informed that in cases of danger or distress, girls and women can contact the Shakti team via WhatsApp at 7993485111. Information about drug usage or sales should be reported to 1972 toll-free helpline. On International Day Against Drug Abuse, SP Ratna announced that awareness rallies and educational campaigns are being conducted across the district on Thursday. She also appreciated students, who pledged to spread awareness about child labor, early marriage, and similar issues within their families and communities. She promised to reward those, who participate actively in awareness activities. She emphasised that each student has a role in building a better future and supporting government efforts to create a safe and aware society.
