Though the real cause behind the Mansa Devi stampede will be determined after an official investigation, as per Haridwar District Magistrate Mayur Dixit, the chaos was prompted by a rumour that an electric cable had broken down and current was flowing through the section.
Some eyewitnesses said panic erupted after a person reportedly yelled about a live electric wire on the route, creating chaos among the group of pilgrims, Dixit added.
The news spread like wildfire among worshippers on the steep staircase to the hilltop temple, resulting in a sudden clamour and panic.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami was pained by the tragedy and said emergency response teams comprising SDRF, police, and medical staff had reached the site in time and initiated relief operations.
"Sad news has been received that a stampede occurred on the path to the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar. SDRF, local police and other rescue teams have reached the location and are involved in relief and rescue work," said Dhami in a Facebook post.
The injured were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Located at the top of the Shivalik Hills at an elevation of more than 500 feet, the Mansa Devi temple is a temple for Goddess Mansa Devi. It is one of the five holy places or Panch Tirthas in Haridwar.

Bihar gangster wanted for murder killed in police encounter in UPs Hapur
Hapur/Lucknow, Jul 28 (PTI) A gangster wanted in a high-profile murder case in Bihar was killed in an encounter with police in Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh, a senior officer said here on Monday. The gunfight broke out on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, Additional Director General (ADG) of UP STF Amitabh Yash said in a statement. The exchange of fire took place in the Simbhaoli area of Hapur district, involving the Noida unit of the special task force of the Uttar Pradesh Police, along with Bihar Police and Hapur police. During the encounter, the gangster sustained a gunshot injury to his chest and was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to injuries, he said. According to ADG Yash, a significant quantity of firearms, cartridges, and other items were seized. The deceased has been identified as Dabloo Yadav, a resident of Sahebpur Kamal area in Begusarai district of Bihar. He was a wanted criminal in a murder case and carried a cash reward of Rs 50,000 on his head. Yadav was the main accused in the abduction and murder of Vikash Kumar alias Rakesh Kadam, the block president of the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM party) and a social worker, in Begusarai district, the STF said. On May 24, 2025, Yadav, with the help of his gang, kidnapped Kadam from the Sahebpur Kamal area and took him to the riverine 'diara' region where he was killed and buried under sand to conceal the body, the STF added. UP Police constable's wife dies by suicide, posts Instagram video accusing in-laws of harassment
The wife of a police constable in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow died by suicide on Sunday by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her residence. The incident came to light after she posted an Instagram video alleging harassment by her in-laws, news agency PTI reported, citing police. The police said they have notified the woman's family, who have left their home in Mainpuri to come to Lucknow. 'On Sunday, it was learnt through an Instagram video that the woman committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan in the house. She is the wife of a constable, who is currently posted in Eagle Mobile at Bakshi Ka Talab station,' the police said in a statement, PTI reported. In the video shared before her death, the woman accused her in-laws of trying to get her husband remarried and claimed her brother-in-law had threatened to kill her, the statement added. The police said they have notified the woman's family, who have left their home in Mainpuri to come to Lucknow. 'On receipt of their complaint, a case will be registered and necessary action will be taken,' the statement said. Pune man arrested after wife dies by suicide In a separate incident, a 26-year-old woman allegedly took her own life by hanging herself at her home in Maharashtra's Pune after which her husband has been arrested, and her in-laws have been booked in connection with a dowry harassment case, police said on July 22. The incident occurred on July 18. The accused has been identified as Ashish Deepak Dhamodar, 32, the deceased woman's husband, who runs a badminton academy in Moshi. The police have also named Ashish's parents – Sunanda Deepak Dhamodar and Deepak Tukaram Dhamodar – in the case. According to the complaint lodged by Sanjay Dod, 58, from Akola district, his daughter was allegedly subjected to harassment and mental torture over dowry demands. Police said the woman's in-laws had demanded ₹5 lakh and a two-wheeler from her family. Her relatives have also alleged that Ashish regularly abused and tormented her, which ultimately led to her death by suicide. The deceased, who was the mother of a one-and-a-half-year-old child, reportedly ended her life on the day of Ashish's birthday. An argument erupted between the couple during a cake-cutting celebration. Following the dispute, the woman locked herself in a room and hanged herself from a ceiling fan. Her husband and others broke open the door and rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead. Ganesh Jamdar, SPI at MIDC Bhosari Police Station, said, 'As per the complaint filed by the father of the woman, we have registered an FIR against her husband and others and arrested the husband. Further investigation is going on.' The case has been registered under BNS sections 80, 115(2), 351(2), 352, and 3(5), and further inquiries are underway. Two dead, 32 injured after monkeys break electric wire triggering stampede at Avsaneshwar temple in UP's Barabanki temple
Two people were killed and 32 injured in a stampede at a temple here after a live electric wire, broken by monkeys, fell onto a tin shed early on Monday, officials said. The incident occurred at the Avsaneshwar temple in the Haidergarh area during the holy month of Shravan on Monday when devotees had gathered at the temple for 'jalabhishek' (offering water as a ritual). The electric current spread through the tin shed as the wire fell, triggering panic and a stampede in the temple premises. Prashant (22) from the Mubarakpura village under the Lonikatra police station area and another 30-year-old devotee succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at the Trivediganj Community Health Centre (CHC), officials said. This comes a day after eight people were killed in a stampede that broke out during a rush of pilgrims along a stair route leading to the Mansa Devi temple on a hilltop in Haridwar. Rumours of an electric current where the stairs begin triggered panic among people, leading to the stampede, according to the police. A total of 10 injured persons were brought to Trivediganj CHC, of whom five were referred to higher medical centres due to their critical condition. Meanwhile, 26 injured devotees are being treated at the Haidergarh CHC, and one of them has been referred for advanced care due to serious injuries. Following the incident, there was chaos in the temple and surrounding areas. District and police officials reached the spot and are working to manage the situation. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the incident. Barabanki District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi said that during the 'jalabhishek' ritual, monkeys had damaged an electric wire, which caused current to flow through three tin sheds in the temple complex. The resulting panic led to a stampede in which two people lost their lives and more than two dozens were injured, he added. Devotees later resumed their worship at the temple. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed 'deep sorrow' over the loss of lives and extended his condolences to the bereaved families. 'He has directed the district administration officials to expedite the proper treatment of the injured and relief operations,' Adityanath's office posted on X in Hindi. 'He has prayed to Lord Mahadev, the supreme deity, to grant salvation to the departed souls and a speedy recovery to the injured,' it added.
