Forensics of rifles, bullets led to confirming of the Pahalgam attackers identity
NEW DELHI: It was possibly the smallest cargo that a special plane, requisitioned at short notice, may have carried, but which would end up solving one of the most crucial terror investigations of the time.
After three terrorists were killed in a 'Operation Mahadev' on Monday by the Army, CRPF and J&K police in Dachigam area, the security establishment did not stop at simply getting them identified by family members of the two locals who had provided them food and shelter at their seasonal dhok (hut) near Baisaran, a day before the attack.
Home minister Amit Shah directed the adoption of a more scientific route — a ballistic test at the Central forensic science laboratory (CFSL), Chandigarh to match the weapons recovered from the slain terrorists with the cartridge casings recovered from the Pahalgam attack site.
The latter had already been tested earlier at the same lab.
The weapons, an M-4 carbine and two AK-47s, were flown from Srinagar to Chandigarh in a special plane on Monday-Tuesday midnight. The forensic/ballistic experts at CFSL burnt the midnight oil, conducting test firings and generating empty shells for comparison.
'The grooves and the markings from the barrels and shells matched perfectly...Six forensic experts confirmed to me on video call at 4.46 am on Tuesday that these were the same rifles used in killing our innocent citizens (in Pahalgam),' Shah shared in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

Maharashtra Cabinet reshuffle: Manikrao Kokate, caught playing ‘rummy', loses agriculture ministry, gets new portfolio
Maharashtra minister and NCP MLA Manikrao Kokate was reportedly divested of the agriculture ministry and alloted new portfolios in a late-night cabinet reshuffle on Thursday. Kokate has been shifted from the agriculture ministry to the sports and youth welfare department. He will also be in charge of the minority development and Auqaf departments, accordign to a notification issued by the General Administration Department (GAD) on Thursday night. Dattatrey Bharne, the current sports minister, will be the new agriculture minister, as per the notification cited by new agency PTI. Both Kokate and Bharne are MLAs of the Ajit Pawar-led NCP. Bharne is MLA from Indapur in Pune district. Kokate, a legislator from Sinnar in Nashik district, found himself in hot water after a video of him playing an online rummy game on his mobile phone while sitting in the legislative council during the monsoon session was shared on social media by NCP (SP) leaders Rohit Pawar and Jitendra Awhad. Manikrao Kokate later claimed that it was a "solitaire game" and that he was only trying to skip a downloaded game on his mobile phone. "It is a solitaire game, not Rummy. Any of my colleagues must have downloaded it. I was trying to see what was happening in the lower house. I was not playing Rummy. The Opposition is trying to demean the government," Kokate said. "I don't even know what rummy is," he said. "Ten different types of ads come up on YouTube... You have to watch it for 30 seconds and you can't even skip it...," he said. Maharashtra minister Manikrao Kokate also claimed that selective footage had been shared on social media to defame him. "When the upper house of the state legislature was adjourned, I took out my mobile phone to check the business transacted in the lower house and was trying to open YouTube," he was quoted by news agency PTI as saying. "The downloaded game suddenly opened, and I was skipping it. It was a matter of just 5 to 10 seconds; why that part was not shown?" he said while responding to the criticism he was facing over the video. "The full video should come out. Only a short clip has been made viral. This is a ploy by the opposition, but their tactics will never succeed," Kokate was quoted by India Today as saying. He also courted controversy for allegedly equating farmers with beggars a few months ago. ED raids against Bengaluru group in homebuyers fraud case
Bengaluru, Aug 1 (PTI) The Enforcement Directorate on Friday conducted searches against a Bengaluru-based real estate company and its promoters who are accused of duping home buyers worth crores of rupees in the name of selling them flats in their residential project, official sources said. At least ten premises of Ozone Urbana Developers Pvt. Ltd. and its key management personnel were raided in Bangalore and Mumbai under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the sources said. The main promoter of the group is Satyamoorthi Vasudevan. The company and its promoters were booked by the ED after taking cognisance of multiple police FIRs registered against them related to a residential project named Ozone Urbana in Devanahalli Taluk of Bengaluru. The integrated township project was to be handed over to buyers in 2018. However, till 2024, only 49 per cent of the project was completed, the sources said. The company 'failed" to hand over the project and has neither returned the money to the buyers, they claimed. It is alleged that the accused company and its key management personnel 'cheated" gullible home buyers by promising to pay their bank EMIs (taken for purchase of homes) until completion of the project. The company also promised many buyers 'huge" discounts, if they pay full amount in advance against the bookings and it also allegedly lured them with a 'buyback scheme". It is alleged that the directors of the said company cheated its buyers collectively to the tune of hundreds of crores and misappropriated the funds, the ED sources said. Opposition MPs write to Birla, seek special discussion on Bihar SIR
New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI) Leaders of several Opposition parties, including Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, on Friday wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, urging him to schedule a special discussion on the ongoing voter list revision in Bihar without any further delay. In their letter to Birla, the Opposition MPs expressed deep concern over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar, especially a few months before the state assembly elections. The signatories to the letter included Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Gandhi, Congress' Deputy Leader in the House Gaurav Gogoi, DMK's TR Baalu, NCP (SP)'s Supriya Sule, RSP's N K Premachandran, SP's Lalji Verma, TMC's Kakoli Ghose Dastidar, Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Arvind Savant and RJD's Abhay Kumar. 'We, the undersigned Members of Parliament representing various Opposition parties, wish to express our deep concern over the ongoing voter list revision in Bihar, especially a few months before the state assembly elections," the opposition MPs said in their letter. 'This is unprecedented. The Election Commission of India has indicated that similar exercises will soon be undertaken across the country. Given the widespread apprehension about the transparency, timing, and intent of this process, the matter requires the urgent attention of the House," they said. The Opposition has consistently raised this issue since the start of the current session, the MPs said. 'It was reiterated in several interactions with the Government, including the All-Party Meeting held on Sunday, July 20. While the Government has stated its willingness to discuss all issues, including this one, no date has yet been fixed for such a discussion," the letter said. The revision of electoral rolls has direct implications on the right to vote and the conduct of free and fair elections, the opposition MPs said . 'A special discussion in the Lok Sabha will allow Members to seek clarity and ensure transparency and accountability. We, therefore, urge you to schedule a special discussion on the ongoing voter roll revision without any further delay," they said in their letter to Birla. The opposition has been protesting in both Houses of Parliament against the SIR, alleging the EC's exercise was aimed at 'disenfranchising voters" in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections.
